The Teen Murti Memorial stands in the memory of the fallen cavalry men of the 15th Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade. The brigade consisted of cavalry regiments from the states of Mysore, Jodhpur and Hyderabad along with the detachments of Bhavnagar, Kashmir and Kathiwar. They fought in the Saini, Palestine and Syria region during the Great War of 1914 -18 (popularly known as the First World War) The triangular obelisk shaped memorial has three life sized statues of three soldiers in the three corners. The sculptures were made by British sculptor Leonard Jennings. The memorial was inaugurated in 8 March 1924 by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Reading. The memorial commemorates the victorious operation by the Indian soldiers carried out on 23 September 1918 targeted the fortification of the city of Haifa (now in Isreal) which was then controlled by a joint Ottoman, German and Austro-Hungarian force. The Indian soldiers fighting for the Allied Powers, captured Haifa and cleared a crucial route for the Allies. A total of 44 Indian soldiers from the three princely states died during the liberation of Haifa. Somoura Mahavihara (popularly known as Paharpur) is one of the 3 #unescoworldheritagesite of #bangladesh 🇧🇩 It was a Pala period Buddhist monastery, which was constructed by Dharmapala (reign: 781-821). Archaeological evidence shows that the monastery reached its pinnacle during the 11th century CE after which a series of ups and downs followed and it was probably in the 13th century that the monastery was finally abondoned and forgotten. An archaeological dig in 1923 reveled a massive monastery with 177 monastic cells and a huge central stupa. The Archaeological Department of Bangladesh houses a guest house within the complex. Red Taj - tomb of John William Hessing (1739 - 1803) Hessing first came to India (via Ceylon) in 1757 and initially worked for the Dutch East India Company. In 1784, he joined the Scindias and served under Mahadaji Scindia (reign: 1768-1794) and his son Daulat Rao Scindia (reign: 1794-1827). He served as the commander of Agra Fort till his death on July 21, 1803. The tomb was commissioned by his wife Anna Derridon, a Eurasian woman from Pondicherry. Hessing’s mausoleum is a red sandstone structure made on the lines of the great Taj. The grand tomb is part of the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Agra. Chicken 🐔 Cheese 🧀 Kabiraji Momo Rs 100 (5 pieces) Riya Momo, Ultadanga I got introduced to the Tibetan dumplings during my St. Xavier's College days. It was early and mid nineties, and momo was only available in a couple of shops in the Elgin Road area. With the turn of the millennium, momo turned into a popular street food in the city. The steamed and fried momos soon started competing with the roll and chowmein. Post Covid 19, there was a drastic change in the street food scenery of Kolkata. A large range of fusion street food evolved. The humble momo came up with several innovative fusion versions, including gandhoraj momo, Afghan momo, tondori momo and many more. Kabiraji momo was also on the list. Just like the kabiraji cutlet, the kabiraji momo is served with a coverage of crispy fried eggs. Chowmahall Palace, Hyderabad The Chowmahalla Palace was once the residence of Asaf Jahi dynasty, popularly known as the Nizams. It is located in the heart of Hyderabad near Charminar. It presently serves as a museum showcasing the legacy of the Nizams. The Chowmahalla Palace dates back to 1751 and was built on the lines of the Shah’s Palace in Tehran, Iran. Although the name suggested four mansions, the complex houses many, many more. The palace complex once covered an area of 45 acres but it has now shrunk to merely 12 acres. It is divided into two courtyards. The palaces are laid around the courtyards complete with manicured lawns dotted with flowerbeds. The Nizam lost power in 1948, when India annexed Hyderabad state via Operation Polo. But the Chowmahalla Palace remained a property of the Nizam. The conservation work of the Chowmahalla Palace was initiated by Esra Birgen, daughter-in-law of the last Nizam Asaf Jahi VII. After half a decade of restoration, the place complex was brought back to its former glory. In 2005, the palace, along with museum, was opened to the public. In 2010, the restoration process was presented with the UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit Award. Since, the beginning of 2025 my travels have gone through a major change. I have always been a budget traveler and normally stayed at budget hotels. But since 2025 I have been preferring hostels over cheap hotels. Here comes thehosteller India's largest self-operrating backpacker's hostel chain. In my last 2 trips I have stayed in 3 of The Hosteller's property. They Includes Ooty, Kochi and Lonavala. In Kochi I had a single room but in Ooty and Lonavala I had a dormitory bed. It was great sharing space with people half my age. At Lonavala the property came in with a lawn, swimming pool and cafe. An amazing place to share with fellow travelers. Snan Yatra (or Snana Yatra) is the annual bathing festival of Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra. It happens on the full moon day of the Bengali month of Jayeshtha (May or June). It predates the Ratha Yatra by about a fortnight. During the festival, the idols of Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra are taken out of the temple and are shifted to the snan mancha (bathing platform). There, they are ceremonially bathed and decorated for a public audience with the devotees. After the bathing ritual, the idols are brought back to the temple. According to legend, they are said to fall ill. According to legend, the trio recovers under the able guidance of the raj vaidya (royal physician) and within 15 or 16 days, they are ready for their journey to their masir bari (maternal aunt’s home). The trip, which is more commonly known as Rath Yatra. Rath Yatra always reminds us of Puri and the towering chariots. Closer home in West Bengal Rath Yatra is also celebrated in a grand way, complete with towering chariots. In Guptipara, a non-descript village in Hooghly district Rath Yatra is celebrated in a grand way. The Snan Yatra is held on an elevated platform on the temple complex. Maha Parinirban Temple, Kushinagar Kushinagar, in Uttar Pradesh (UP), is the place where Gautam Buddha chose to die and attend mahaparinirvan — the Sanskrit term which means nirvana after death. A 1956-built temple stands atop the archaeological ruins. The temple, comprising a shrine and stupa, was built to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the death of Buddha. The shrine houses a 6.1-metre-long Buddha statue in reclining posture, with the head towards the north. It is made out of a single stone and rests on a stone couch. The statue was discovered in 1877 in a heavily damaged state and fragmented parts. The fragments were joined to create the statue. The temple stands on the ruins of a Buddhist vihar. The earliest part of the vihar probably dates back to the time of Asoka with subsequent additions by the Kushans (50 -241 CE) and Guptas (320 – 647 CE). Today, it is the centre of attractions in Kushinagar both for pilgrims and tourists.
