We let Toffee go into Kody’s coop for the first time ever on his birthday, and it was beautifully bittersweet. He could sense and smell Kody, and even pawed at the ground where some of Kody’s ashes were. It was such a special place for Kody, and while it’s difficult, I’m glad Toffee gets to carry on Kody’s memories while creating new ones of his own ❤️🩹

![What better way to celebrate a first birthday than with a day full of firsts! 🥹
Since princetoffeecake is a rescue cat, we don’t actually know his real birthdate, but when we found him on January 1st he was about 4 months old so that would make his birthday around the beginning of September. And as September 1st is also ginger cat appreciation day AND the first day of Spring in Australia, we thought it would be the purrfect day to celebrate 🥳
Toffee got a bunch of new toys and treats, but also got some very special gifts from Kody including his first ever pup cup, an apron, Kody’s cafe cardboard scratcher, and Toffee’s first trip inside Kody’s coop (which you will see in the next video). It ended up being an incredibly emotional day for me and was very bittersweet. I didn’t think about how hard it would be celebrating for Toffee while still grieving for and remembering Kody. Grief seems to be a thread woven throughout even the happiest of moments. ❤️🩹
Toffee had such a wonderful first birthday, and it was so special seeing him get excited and experiencing everything for the first time. We may not be his first family, but I’m so happy that we’re his last and can’t wait to celebrate more “firsts” and happy birthdays with him 🩵🐈

![I wish I could say these Pumpkin Spice Pop-tarts with maple cinnamon glaze aren’t worth the effort but unfortunately they are delicious 😩 If you want to make the process a little quicker, use store bought short crust pastry, otherwise make the dough ahead of time and fall in love with these purrfectly delicious homemade pop-tarts! 🍁
🥧Pastry
2 1/2 cups plain flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, cut into squares & chilled
5 tbsp ice water + more if needed
🎃Filling
1/2 cup (120g) pumpkin puree
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground clove
1 egg + 1 tbsp milk
🍁Maple Cinnamon Glaze
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
25g (2 tbsp) unsalted butter
1 cup icing sugar / powdered sugar
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

![Recreate the viral Hailey Bieber Strawberry Glaze Erewhon smoothie at home for a fraction of the cost 🍓😻
Purchasing all the ingredients (especially the collagen and sea moss) will set you back a bit at first, but if you plan to make daily smoothies it will be much cheaper in the long run. You can also skip the collagen and sea moss if you just want a nice tasting smoothie without the extra benefits and save a bit of $$$.
Cost at Erewhon $30.68 AUD ($20 USD)
Cost to make at home $7.25 AUD ($4.72 USD)
🍓Strawberry glaze
1 small punnet strawberries, chopped
1 tbsp maple syrup
Dash of water
🥥Coconut cream
1 can chilled coconut cream
🧋Smoothie
1 cup frozen strawberries
1/2 frozen banana
1/4 avocado
1 pitted date
1 scoop collagen powder
1 tbsp sea moss gel
5 ice cubes
1/2 cup almond milk + more if needed
1. Make the strawberry glaze and coconut cream 1 day ahead. For the glaze, add chopped strawberries, maple syrup, and dash of water to a small saucepan and heat until bubbling. Pour into food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Chill in fridge.
2. For the cream, carefully open the can of coconut without shaking it. Scoop the cream from the top (you don’t need the liquid on the bottom). Gently whisk the cream until slightly thickened and spreadable. Store covered in the fridge until needed.
3. After glaze and coconut are cooled & ready, prepare the smoothie. To a blender add all of the smoothie ingredients and blend until very smooth. You may need to add extra almond milk to help blend to right consistency.
4. To assemble the smoothie, add strawberry glaze to the bottom of your cup so it’s just covered (about 2 spoons). Smear coconut cream along inside of the cup using a spoon or butter knife. Pour smoothie into cup & enjoy! 💖

![This week and month is a difficult one for me. It was 1 year ago when Kody began showing symptoms of his heart failure and when our lives changed completely overnight. It feels like there is a constant lump of anxiety and sadness in my throat and the tears have been coming out of nowhere. The cherry blossoms have started to bloom again, but even their beautiful pink petals remind me of one year ago, when Kody was still here.
I see, feel, and hear ‘signs’ of Kody all the time. A song on the radio, foxes everywhere, a whisker found in his favourite sleeping spot. One thing we’ve been doing as a way to honour and remember Kody, is we use his name when we order takeaway coffees. It sounds a little silly, but it’s really nice to hear his name called out in the middle of a busy cafe.
Yesterday we went to one of our local cafes and ordered 2 coffees under Kody’s name as usual. When we went to pay, we were told that they had been taken care of by “anonymous”. It was such a wonderful gesture of kindness, and made even more special because it was for “Kody”.
If you can spare few dollars this week, I challenge you to pay forward a small act of kindness into the world. Whether you pay for someone’s coffee, or maybe get a friend or co-worker a little sweet treat to brighten their day. It can make such a big difference, and really remind someone that they’re not alone in whatever they’re going through. For me, it felt like Kody was still finding ways to send love into the world, even a year later. 💌☕️🐈

![Well that didn’t go as planned 🫣 Story time ⬇️
True story: Honey loves playing with the plastic rings that are found around the caps on milk jugs, and has done this since she was a kitten. She has always just carried them around like they were her babies, and the plastic was thick enough that I never worried about her chewing it.
Fast forward to adopting our little terror princetoffeecake , and he finds one of Honey’s old milk ring “babies” and is playing with it and being cute one morning. Next thing I know, I find the milk ring torn in half with a large chunk missing. 😨 I go into FULL panic mode and start tearing the house apart, hoping to find the missing piece and that he hadn’t swallowed it. Kody had a similar scare when he was a kitten after he ate a piece of ribbon and had to have it endoscopically removed, and this was all I could think about. I couldn’t find the plastic anywhere, and at this point I was full-on sobbing and thinking the absolute worse, while Toffee just happily rolled around on the floor, oblivious to my distress. 😭
Just as I’m pulling out his carrier and about to call the emergency vet to bring him in, out of nowhere Toffee is batting the missing plastic piece around in the middle of the living room. 🙃
While I was so relieved that he hadn’t swallowed it, I was also so angry at myself for underestimating the chewing abilities of a crazy ginger kitten with razor sharp baby teeth 😩
