![Is Jamel really tall or am I just really short? Maybe a lil bit of both…
Jamel has an incredible story about his path to the flight deck. After earning two degrees on a basketball scholarship, he chose to hang up the sneaks and pursue his first love, aviation. Because of his height, he faced adversity trying to find aircraft that could accommodate him. Turns out the Cessna 172 worked out well enough. He moved to Florida and worked as a ramper for Southwest to support himself through flight school. Fast forward a few years, he had to turn down various corporate jobs and upgrades to captain all because he couldn’t fit in the flight deck of various jets, limiting his opportunities. But after years in a Brasilia and a few more flying the 767 for a cargo company, we found ourselves meeting on a flight deck of the Airbus A220.
When we first met, Jamel was already in the flight deck. After introducing ourselves, Jamel said “Hey, I just want to give you a heads up. I’m really tall. We may get a lot of attention walking through the airport. I hope that doesn’t make you uncomfortable.” To which I was like… uhhh…like how tall? 6’11. Alright, so a little over a foot taller than me, casual 😅
I wanted to share Jamel’s story because to me, this was so inspiring. Here’s a guy who could have potentially play basketball professionally, but instead decided to put his head down and figure out a way to make his dream come to fruition. ![Here’s a quick recap of a weekend in oceancitymaryland. Rain or shine, Ocean City is always a good time! Plus, OC had some of the best seafood I’ve had in a long time. Most memorable being the crab cake from fagers and the mussels for Harrison’s harborwatch. Assateague Island National Seashore was really unique for kayaking with assateague.adventures and the parks wild horses, something I wasn’t expecting to see. And to top it off, seacretsusa and spainwinebar were great spots to let loose and celebrate.

![If we had a documentary crew on an average family vacation, it would probably look something like this. That being said, a trip to oceancitymaryland was a great way to bond with my brothers. A place for everyone’s interests, from the foodies to the adventure seekers, 365 days a year. Some of the highlights were kayaking in the Assateague National Park, golfing at the Ocean City Golf Club, the Ocean City nightlife, and can’t forget the signature Maryland crabcakes.

![The Broad Street Run was my first ever race. 10 miles, which is a PR for me distance wise. All I can say now is, “I get it”. The energy was high, and the crowds were awesome. Never saw myself as a runner. But it’s kinda silly to put ourselves in boxes. It feels good to do things out of our comfort zone. Planning on the Philly half marathon next. ![Best thing about this job is the people you meet over the years, and randomly reconnecting. Special thanks for crew scheduling for pairing me with one of my OG pilots friends dating back to our first gig flying air tours in Saipan in 2017. Not only did we live together out in Saipan, but we ended up at Piedmont together, and now Delta. Who woulda thought we’d get hired at our dream airline together, and only a couple years later end up repoing an empty jet through a snow storm in Boston to New York. Always a pleasure Harry!

![I’ve been dreaming about building this Concorde lego set the moment it was announced. I realized very quickly in my professional career that the 9-5 lifestyle wasn’t really for me. But having that perspective is what made me appreciate how lucky I am to have the job I have now.
It’s always bothered me when people say they can’t do something, like “I can’t cook”. Well with that mindset, you’ll never get good at cooking. Same could be said about creating videos, learning photography, or flying an airplane. It takes time, and persistence to get better at things. Nothing earned is ever really easy. I like sharing my story because I know what it feels like to be stuck, and know how scary it can be to take risks. It takes courage to step outside your comfort zone. But in the end I promise it’ll be worth it.
All things aside, Lego did a fantastic job with this Concorde set. I’ve been geekin’ over the attention to detail. Not shown is the fact that the landing gear retracts, and there’s an actual cabin. Alright I’m done. 🙂
