What I absolutely love about Pilates and the way I approach it, is the freedom to just move with the equipment. Once you understand the fundamentals of movement and learn how your body is meant to move in a way that feels good, it becomes pure flow. I don’t get caught up in sticking to the classical way of doing things or following the manual word for word. Instead, I take the principles, listen to my body, and move in a way that feels good.

That’s the same energy I try to bring to my clients by helping them build more awareness of their own movements and strengths.

When working with advanced clients, I focus on keeping the flow smooth and quick. I challenge them with different spring tensions (depending on the exercise), added balance work, and more complex movements. Keeping a steady pace adds difficulty to the session. I always love getting the chance to work with my girl annamariekupp when she’s in town.

When working with clients, it’s important to add variety to keep them mentally engaged. At the same time, I like to repeat similar movements in different positions so we’re constantly training and improving the same areas. In a way, we’re “tricking” the mind by doing these movements through different setups and on different apparatus, which keeps things “new” while still building progress.

When working with taller clients like professional basketball players, I focus on improving hip mobility and external rotation of the hips and legs to reduce strain on their hips and knees. Strengthening the glutes and ankles helps stabilize joints essential for jumping and quick changes of direction. I also emphasize shoulder mobility and strength to enhance their range and coverage on the court. By combining targeted exercises with equipment built for larger bodies, I make sure each athlete gets a Pilates program tailored to their specific needs to improve their performance.

As a Pilates instructor who works with clients of all body types, I need to underastand how to approach clients who may be taller than average. 

When working on hip mobility with clients who are 6’10” means recognizing that their body moves through space very differently than someone of average height.

At 6’10”, the limbs are longer, which means there’s more torque (rotational force) placed on the hips during movement. That can make the hips tighter or limit the mobility more which impacts how someone walks, squats, rotates, or even sits.

I think about how much hip flexion they average in their day to day just as a result of being taller. So I focus on hip extension, internal and external rotation a lot. Improving mobility helps taller clients move more efficiently and reduces wear and tear on your joints.

Why do I use the jumpboard when I teach?

It’s one of my favorite ways to move clients in a low impact, supported way. Using the Reformer, we’re able to add in jumping while lying on our backs so we’re not overloading the joints but we’re still working on their cardio, coordination, strength, and building bone density over time.

I can change the springs to challenge or support my clients depending on what we need to focus on. Whether it be to build control, strength, or their proprioception.

I focus a lot on hip extension with my clients not just to stretch the front of the hip but to build awareness in their movements or lack of rang. My goal is for them to be able to control their movements while in motion which is why I focus on pelvic stability.

When someone lacks control or range in hip extension, the pelvis can’t move freely and the lower back often starts to compensate to make up for the lack of range. That usually shows up as extension in the lumbar spine, which over time can lead to low back pain.
