I don’t post as much anymore about my studio work since the launch of oliveandwinniewellness so as a side note if you didn’t already know you can join me here every Tuesday morning for your reformer fix!! ✨Why is a variety of class styles important for your health? ✨

As a Pilates teacher, I often encourage people to have variety in their wellness routine. Unfortunately there isn’t a single class style which ticks all the boxes, so it’s important we mix things up so we can be improving our strength, mobility and cardio, as well as taking the time to slow down and be still. 

I realise with how much people have going on, this can seem completely unattainable but I promise it can be simpler than it feels.

Having discipline & self compassion is the key to creating healthy habits 🔑

I thought I’d share some of what we discussed in our weekly member newsletters over on oliveandwinniewellness - the theme this month was prioritising you and one of the focusses was balancing discipline and self compassion ✨

For me, a good routine has been created by working on two main things, learning to use self-compassion and discipline together. I think often these two things can feel quite separate but I really believe they are a magic combination. 

What do I mean by self-compassion?

To me, self-compassion is all about checking in with what is going to serve me best on that month/week/day/period of life. I try to work with the weather seasons, not against them. I also try to work with my menstrual cycle, not against it and I try to be kind to myself. 

What do I mean by discipline? 

I believe that discipline is a very important part of being able to prioritise myself. Of course, there are days where I don’t feel like doing my yoga/pilates/exercise/breathwork (etc), however I always keep in mind that I will feel better after it and this requires discipline. Habits get so much easier over time because it becomes part of your lifestyle but I really believe that discipline is needed to begin with.

Why is a balance of the two so effective?

I believe that having self-compassion means that most of the time I am able to enjoy the sessions that I do to prioritise myself because I am working with what serves me best, not trying to force myself to do something that isn’t suited to me at that time. The discipline element is there for creating a lifestyle of healthy habits and for the days where it might feel tempting to not prioritise yourself. 

Top tip: Try not to set yourself an unrealistic goal as this often leads to an inevitable feeling of failure. Start small and build up to your dream lifestyle.

Thank you so much for all the love I received on my last monthly roundup where I shared a little about my recent struggles. I really believe that opening up is sooo helpful and for me it has been. Voicing your struggles makes you realise so many of us are in the same boat and also makes you realise how far you’ve come.

April Moments ✨

The past couple months have been super mixed as my personal life has been amazing but I’ve also struggled a lot with the launch of oliveandwinnie_ which has felt like it’s come out of the blue. I wanted to talk about it because I’m aware that looking at my April highlights it may seem as if I’ve got everything together, when I’ve actually felt a real sense of unravelling when it comes to work. 

I’ve felt as if I’m supposed to be loving every minute of launching a new business, to be proud of myself, to keep grafting and pushing on in challenging times. I’ve put lots of pressure on myself, compared myself to other female founders and struggled more than I thought with being a sole founder. 

When I’m feeling good, the feeling of being a solo founder is amazing however I’ve also found when I’m not feeling good (a bit stuck, uncreative, unmotivated), there’s no team or co-founder to boost me back up or tap in. I felt guilty for feeling negative emotions towards something I’ve worked so hard on and was so excited to launch, which led to a bit of a spiralling and a real feeling of being stuck. I decided to take the pressure off of posting on social media, which turned into hardly any posting since launching, which turned into a constant feeling that I’m not doing enough! 

After a brief holiday I’m approaching everything with a new mindset - I have all the time in the world to build my brand, nothing is permanent and it’s okay if some days I don’t feel on top form. 

I hope this doesn’t come across as a lack of gratitude as I truly am so grateful for my work and my privileges that have helped me to get here. I also am extremely grateful for all my amazing clients (in person and online). Each client, sign up and class booking means more than you know to a small business owner. 

Instead, I hope this is a reminder to you that we all struggle in some form. I also hope that at least a few small business owners are reading this and feeling seen. 

We’ve got this, let’s remember nobody knows what they’re doing and life is all about winging it 🤍
