Breathwork is a powerful way to access your body’s innate intelligence to heal itself. Breathwork, the conscious awareness of your breath, is a practice that is thousands of years old, and while there are many variations, styles and names, all types of breathwork offer the chance for personal transformation through improved mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Our breath, or prana, is literally what keeps us alive, and yet, so often, we go through the day chronically shallow breathing, denying ourselves our full life force which often keeping us in a state of anxiety, or fight or flight. Breathwork, or the process of deep rhythmic breathing, moves us out of fight or flight and into the parasympathetic nervous system.

In today’s modern world, there are few of us who haven’t struggled with anxiety or depression. Breathwork offers a very safe way to address stress, anxiety, grief, depression and anger head on so that our moods don’t start to take over our personal and professional lives. How we breathe often indicates how we feel. In the way shallow rapid breaths make us anxious and tired, long deep breaths that originate in the abdomen can help us feel calm, centered, grounded and energized. The reason for this is because deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which takes us out of fight or flight (the sympathetic nervous system). By activating your parasympathetic nervous system, which slows down your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure, you’re creating a deep feeling of calm and reducing your overall stress and anxiety.

So we now know that breath positively affects the nervous system but it actually goes beyond the nervous system. Changing your breath literally changes your brainwaves! Neuroscientists have made a direct correlation between an increase of alpha brain waves and reduced symptoms of depression. There are five types of brainwaves that we move through during a given day. Breathwork is an effective way to shift your brainwaves from beta to alpha and even theta, thereby decreasing negative thought patterns, stress and depression levels.

Chocolate fudge (low sugar, keto friendly) 

I love this recipe of an indulgent, rich desert which will not raise your blood sugar levels. 

🤎Half a cup of runny tahini
🤎Quarter of a cup of coconut oil 
🤎4 tablespoons spoons of raw cocoa powder 
🤎2 tea spoons of honey or maple syrup 

Mix all ingredients in a blender, pour into ice trays and freeze for at least three hours. A lovely and rich “on the go” healthy snack when you have a chocolate craving.

With the arrival of cold autumnal weather, I am craving sweeter, warmer foods and treats. It is important to incorporate your favourite treats into your diet as restrictive eating regimes may lead to unhealthy relationship with food. Balanced approach is always the best! 

I love this German Apple Cake recipe:

Ingredients 

2 dessert apples, peeled, cored and sliced into thin wedges
1 tbsp lemon juice
125g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
140g golden caster sugar
3 free-range eggs, at room temperature, beaten
225g plain flour
2 level tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
5 tbsp full-fat milk
For the topping
1½ tbsp demerara sugar
½ tsp ground cinnamon

Method

🌸Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3. Butter and line a 23cm/9in round cake tin.
🌸Coat the apple wedges in the lemon juice and set aside.
🌸In a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar, using an electric hand mixer, until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs and beat until smooth. Sift in the flour, baking powder and salt and mix well. Slowly add the milk, mixing well after each addition, until you have a smooth batter.
🌸Transfer the batter to the cake tin. 🌸🌸Arrange the apple slices, flat-side down, on the batter in a spiral pattern.
🌸For the topping, mix together the demerara sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over the batter.
🌸Bake in the middle of the oven for 40–45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean and the top is golden-brown. Leave to cool for 15 minutes in the tin. Run a knife around the edges of the cake and turn it out of the tin onto a wire rack.
🌸Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream.

I love trying different smoothie bowl variations for breakfast. Try this Strawberry smoothie bowl!! 

Ingredients: 

🌸Skyr. I love using skyr because it’s super thick and creamy. You can also swap in your favorite thick greek yogurt.
🌸Frozen fruit. I use frozen strawberries in this recipe, but you can use your favorites like banana, mango, peaches, etc.
🌸Honey. Honey adds a little sweetness to balance the tart strawberries.
🌸Milk. I use oat milk here, but you can use your favorite!

Blend well and use a variety of toppings, such as berries, granola, toasted nuts or coconut shavings!

Raspberry coconut parfait … a perfect healthy dessert … 🌸🌸

Ingredients

1 x 400ml tin full-fat coconut milk
½ lemon, zested and juiced
2 tbsp agave nectar or maple syrup
1 tsp rose water (optional)
250g fresh raspberries
1 tbsp light brown soft sugar
30g chia seeds
1 table spoon of coconut flakes

Method

Chill the coconut milk in the fridge overnight. Once chilled, open the tin and scoop the firm, separated coconut cream into a bowl. Set aside the water (it can be used in smoothies). Whisk the cream vigorously using an electric hand whisk, until light and fluffy. Add the lemon zest, agave or maple syrup, and rose water (if using), then whisk again until combined. Chill for 10-15 mins.

Meanwhile, put 150g raspberries in a shallow bowl with the lemon juice, chia seeds and the sugar. Roughly mash using the back of a fork until it resembles a compote.
To assemble the parfaits, add a spoonful of compote each to the bottom of 4 small glasses, followed by
a dollop of chilled coconut cream and a handful of whole fresh raspberries on the top. Chill the parfaits until needed. Serve with coconut flakes sprinkled over.

Enjoy!!

A lot of women asked me how I stayed in shape during my recent pregnancy. My first advice is of course to consult with your GP and obstetrician and generally it is not advisable to a start a completely new and possibly strenuous routine! 

Personally I continued with reformer Pilates sessions (my favourite) however choosing specially designed prenatal sessions. I attended tenhealthfitness at their new beautiful studio in Nine Elms, London. 

I supplemented studio work with workouts at home. I used various apps, such as lottiemurphy_ as well as maia.wellco who both have dedicated sections for prenatal Pilates and beyond. I loved both! I also continued with my ashleydeleonpilates practice which offers both pregnancy friendly and regular session with elements of flow! 

In addition I used downdogapp for prenatal yoga workouts! I also did a lot of walking and stretching!

Favourite dessert at the moment: 

Ricotta with honey and strawberries, so light and delicious!! I absolutely love the texture and flavour of Italian ricotta cheese.

Ricotta cheese is made from very fine curds, resulting in a smooth but slightly grainy texture. Although very similar, cottage cheese, on the other hand, contains more liquid and is lumpier than ricotta.

As we start to feel the Spring in the air, I’m craving cooler and lighter breakfasts. Instead of oat porridge I choose overnight oats with chia topped with berries, bananas and coconut shavings. 

Soak 50 grams of gluten free oats, a tablespoon spoon of chia seeds and a half a grated apple in oat milk. The liquid should cover the oats by approximately 5mm. Keep in the fridge overnight. In the morning, stir well and top with Goji berries, nuts of your choice, coconut shavings, berries and slices of banana. You may add cinnamon as sprinkle on top.

Things I do to optimise my health … 

🌸Cryotherapy and steam rooms therapy. Whilst cryotherapy is amazing for reducing inflammation, speeding up metabolism and  it just feels great, steam room therapy is a great way to stimulate the lymph system, detox and unwind. 

🌸Sungazing and being out in nature: I love being outdoors and connecting to nature. I choose activities where I am outside, close to nature as much as possible — walking, hiking, biking, swimming or simply sitting in the fresh air and sunshine, Al fresco dining anyone? :) 

🌸Tea … yes tea :) tea is very important to me. I love hibiscus tea, matcha and buckwheat tea (try buckwheat_t_uk) Tea break is an enjoyable and grounding part of my day and something I look forward to during a busy day. 

🌸Meditation: although it is not yet my daily practice, I am trying to incorporate it into my routine as much as possible. I prefer guided meditations to get me into a flow. 

🌸 Intermittent fasting: great for hormonal balance, mood, digestion and weight regulation. 

🌸Pilates, of course! It’s my favourite exercise which helps me to stay mobile, flexible and strong.
