Let’s talk needle gauge 🧵✨

When we say “gauge,” we’re talking about the thickness of a needle. Here’s the part that confuses people: the higher the gauge number, the thinner the needle.

🔹 Example: A 34-gauge needle is finer (thinner) than a 29-gauge.
🔹 In microneedling, most cartridges use very fine needles (often 30–34 gauge, but some pens offer a 29) so the channels are precise, clean, and cause less trauma to the skin.

Why does it matter?
	•	Thinner needles (higher gauge) = less pain, less bleeding, smoother penetration, faster external healing.
	•	Thicker needles (lower gauge) = sturdier, but can cause more discomfort, longer external healing.

For collagen induction focused microneedling, that sweet spot of tiny, higher-gauge needles is what allows us to create microchannels safely while still triggering collagen and elastin production. However choosing a thicker gauge IS better for a scar focused treatment. This is an advanced service that requires knowledge of gauge, speed settings, depth and frequency.

Just know that there IS a reason cartridges come in different gauges!

So next time you hear “34-gauge” in a microneedling context, you’ll know it means extra fine, precise, and skin-friendly. 💡

Red light therapy = one of the rare “treatments” both humans and dogs love.
Why? It feels good, reduces inflammation, and gives cells a little energy boost so they can heal faster.
For us, that looks like brighter, calmer, glowing skin.
For them, it’s comfort, mobility, and quicker recovery.
Same science, different benefits.

✨ Tell me: have you tried red light for yourself (or your pup)?

☀️ Your skin had a busy summer too: SPF, sweat, travel, late nights, maybe a little extra sun. Fall is the perfect time to hit reset.

Think of it as a post-vacation cleanup for your face:
✨ Exfoliate away the buildup/lift off surface pigment. Incorporate retinoids (smartly) to expedite the process. This step should be thoughtfully considered day by day…always listen to your skin. Back off if you get irritated and
💧 Rehydrate like crazy (like it’s your job!)
🛠️ REPAIR (this is huge, your future self will thank you!) and strengthen with antioxidants, peptides, and DNA repair enzymes
🌿 Calm redness + even tone with azelaic acid, vitamin K, pigment inhibitors and niacinamide

Your WINTER glow starts now. 🍂 Consistency is the secret - and your skin will thank you all season long.

👉 Swipe through for the simple steps to reset your summer skin.

✨ Microneedling & Wrinkles: What’s Really Happening Under the Skin

So how does microneedling actually improve lines, wrinkles, and laxity? It’s all about depth and biology:

🔹 Cosmetic depths (shallow): These boost circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients right where your skin needs them. Think of it as delivering a fresh meal of vitamins directly to your cells.

🔹 Medical depths (deeper): Here’s where the magic really happens. Controlled micro-injuries kick off the wound-healing cascade. Platelets and fibroblasts rush in, releasing growth factors and cytokines - little messengers that tell your skin to rebuild. The result?

New collagen 🧬 (for structure)

New elastin 🪢 (for bounce)

More glycosaminoglycans 💧 (hello hydration)

And here’s something many don’t know: some dermal cells actually contract like tiny smooth muscle fibers after needling. That tightening effect is part of why skin looks firmer and smoother post-treatment.

Bottom line → microneedling doesn’t just “poke holes.” It activates multiple repair pathways that restore structure, hydration, and resilience, which is why it’s so effective for midlife skin.

✨ How do you choose the right microneedling cartridge?

First things first: If you follow my recommendations then your PEN controls the depth, not the cartridge. The cartridge just determines the needle configuration.

👉 For cosmetic (shallow) needling: you can use almost any cartridge count: 12, 16, 24, 36…even higher. More needles simply cover more surface area faster.

👉 For medical (deeper) needling: fewer needles are actually better. Why? Enter the fakir effect.

🧘‍♀️ What IS a Fakir & the Fakir Effect?

A fakir is a spiritual ascetic from South Asia or the Middle East. Fakirs are known for their discipline, simplicity, and sometimes dramatic demonstrations of endurance - like lying on a bed of nails.

That’s where the “fakir effect” comes from. On a bed of nails, the body’s weight is spread across many points, so no single nail pushes hard enough to break the skin.

Microneedling works the same way:

More needles = force is spread out, making penetration shallower.

Fewer needles = more pressure per needle, allowing deeper penetration.

This is why cosmetic microneedling can use larger needle counts (36 and 42) while medical microneedling benefits from fewer needles (9, 12, 16, 18, or 24) for effective collagen induction. Note that cosmetic needling with 12, 16, 18 and 24 is fine too. It’s those bigger numbers that don’t go with medical (deeper) needling.

Bottom line: more isn’t always better - it’s about finding the right configuration to reach the depth you want safely and effectively.

💡 My recommendation: stick to 9, 12, 16, 18, or 24 pins for medical depths. Skip the higher counts (36 and 42). And one last note - never use single-needle cartridges. Those are for tattooing or advanced medical procedures only.

Wash day.
Here’s my routine:
Roz foundation duo (shampoo and conditioner) in the shower. I always shampoo twice (always). I never skip conditioning.
On wet hair (not damp, WET) I put the Virtue oil in the mid strands to ends then the ROZ leave in milk (I like the Roz oil too btw). I don’t use a lot of either!
I use the virtue 6-1 styling cream mid strands to ends and I do not use a lot of this either.
SUPER important: I use a microfiber towel to soak up as much water as possible bc I want to be efficient AND avoid heat as much as I can (a difficult combo).
After probably 20 minutes (get dressed etc) I remove the towel and I brush my hair gently with the snow fox brush. I LOVE this brush. I bought it myself and would rebuy it if I lost it. It was an investment that I’ve never regretted.
Then I air dry as long as I can.
Blow dry on LOW with nozzle pointing DOWN the cuticle. So important if you have frizz.
At the end of the blow dry, I use the snow fox brush again to gently smooth the hair with the blow dryer pointing down the cuticle. This helps speed up the process and also adds shine to the hair.
next, I curl my hair. I take small sections and just curl away from the face. When I’m at the fringe area, I just hold the curling iron straight up and down so that the curl falls almost like a ringlet. This will just depend on the length of your bangs and that is how you would determine how you hold your curling iron. Because my fringe area is almost to my chin I hold it vertical so that the curl will marry in with the rest of my curls. Once I’m done curling my entire head, I might let the curls cool for like five minutes. If I have time. Then I use that same brush and I brush through the mid strands and ends so that the curls are soft. I used to avoid brushing them so that they looked a little bit more piece-y but nowadays, I really like the soft kind of old glamour curl look more than I like the piece-y straight/straight on the ends look. That is all just about preference.

I will link everything in stories and in my link tree if you wanna check them out.

In France this week, and once again I’m struck by how differently skincare is perceived here. Brands Americans label as “medical grade” are sold right alongside drugstore and department store favorites…
Skinceuticals next to Clinique. Bioderma next to Sisley. La Roche Posay and Cetaphil just an aisle over…you get the idea 🩵
In the U.S., we’re sold on the idea that WHERE you buy skincare determines how “serious” it is. Spoiler: it doesn’t. There’s great skincare at every price point (and some not so great at every price point).

There’s no regulated definition of medical grade skincare in the U.S. … it’s a marketing term, not a scientific one.

Great skincare isn’t about prestige or price point. It’s about ingredients, formulation, and consistency.

*By the way, I think Skinceuticals is fantastic.

DO NOT DO THIS!
Nair on the face is basically a perfect recipe for a chemical burn 😬

Hair removal creams like Nair use calcium hydroxide (a strong alkali) and calcium thioglycolate (a sulfur-based compound) to break down keratin in the hair shaft. Keratin is a tough protein, and to dissolve it, the formula has to be high pH: usually around 12. That’s almost the same as household bleach and WAY harsher than anything you’d ever want near facial skin.

Here’s what happens chemically:
	1.	The alkaline environment swells the hair shaft and skin cells so the active ingredient can penetrate.
	2.	Thioglycolate breaks the disulfide bonds holding the keratin structure together, essentially “melting” the hair into a jelly you can wipe off.
	3.	Unfortunately, skin is made of keratin too so it’s not just targeting hair. It can damage your epidermal barrier and proteins in living skin cells if left on too long or used on sensitive areas.
	4.	The result? Protein denaturation + barrier disruption = chemical burn. The redness, blistering, and peeling aren’t “detox” they’re tissue injury.

On the legs, you have thicker skin so there’s a SLIGHTLY better safety buffer (but still risky!!)
On the face there’s almost no margin for error especially if the skin already has irritation, is exfoliated or has microtears.

If she was using it to “kill a parasite,” that’s not how these products work. There’s zero antimicrobial action here…just caustic protein breakdown. So all she really killed was her skin barrier.

People do some dumb shit and share it on the internet. Don’t follow suit. Pardon my French.

What do you think of this?

The HigherDose Red Light Sculptor is a body tool…and it doesn’t mess around.

It delivers electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) up to 48.8 milliamps, which (for perspective) is over 24x stronger than ZIIP 🙂 (ziip is perfect for our face- where higher IS NOT better 🩵)

Here’s how the four levels stack up (for reference):

⚡️ Level 1 = 19.2 mA → 9.5x stronger than ZIIP
⚡️ Level 2 = 39.2 mA → 19.5x stronger
⚡️ Level 3 = 44.8 mA → 22.4x stronger
⚡️ Level 4 = 48.8 mA → 24.4x stronger

Again, ZIIP is designed for the face. It uses microcurrent in the microamp range to energize skin cells, support ATP production, and encourage lymphatic drainage (that’s what I use it for).

The Sculptor? It’s strictly for body. Think sculpting with lymphatic drainage plus red and near-infrared light for collagen, circulation, and recovery. Depending how much pressure you apply and the angle you use you’ll move lymph or you’ll work muscles 💪

This tool also has LED: 650 (red) and 850 (NIR)
At an irradiance of 40. 🩵

Just like any other microcurrent type device this requires a conductivity gel (it comes with one initially and a magnesium spray).

🧠 TL;DR:
ZIIP = skin whisperer
Sculptor = muscle trainer

Don’t use this on your face! ….unless you want your eyebrows to live in a new zip code. 😅 (I’m kidding, it’s not going to lift eyebrows- it’s just too strong for the face. Let’s not invite problems!!).

Let me know if you have any questions. I’ve used this tool since it was in prototype form so I’m very familiar 🙃

🧼✨ Skincare basics that do the heavy lifting

You don’t need a 12-step routine. But you do need to nail the foundations:

✔️ Cleanse like you mean it. Leftover makeup, SPF, and grime can block your actives from working and mess with your barrier.

✔️ Layer from thinnest to thickest. Think of your essences and serums as your base layer and your moisturizer as the coat. Oils almost always go last.

✔️ SPF is your ride or die. Nothing undoes progress faster than UV. If you’re serious about glow, sun protection isn’t optional.

Good skin starts with doing the basics well. Every. Single. Day.

Starting my Hand + Forearm Rehab Journey ✨(this may be my décolletage plan too 🤔)

Years of sun (and let’s be honest…skin negligence 😬) have left my arms looking… well-seasoned. So I’m targeting the damage head-on with a new routine focused on correction, protection, and prevention.

Here’s the game plan:
🌙 Night: Adapalene (a retinoid) + Photozyme Youth Recovery (on back of hands) for skin turnover + DNA repair (photozyme first then adapalene. I’ll top with a moisturizer) I’ll use photozyme BODY on my arms WITH adapalene on top.
🌞 Day: photozyme BODY on my hands topped with Drmtlgy Universal Tinted SPF with niacinamide (my MVP for barrier support, brightness, and pigment control)

Between the retinoid, DNA repair enzymes, and niacinamide-rich sunscreen, I’m aiming to undo past damage, support skin immunity, and keep future sun spots off the guest list.

✨ Goal: better-looking hands + forearms by Christmas.
🎁 Because why should your face get all the love?

Tell me: have you ever treated your arms like your face?

Join me in this! Adapalene is very affordable and accessible. If nothing else adapalene plus a moisturizer at night and an SPF during the day…will yield results in just a few months!

For Christmas I want to be sleighing sun damage!! 🤶🎄

Because the second half of life demands more strength, literally.

As estrogen declines, so does muscle mass. This natural process, called sarcopenia, accelerates in our 40s and beyond…unless we fight back. And no, that doesn’t mean doing more cardio. It means resistance training. Heavy things. Real muscle-building.

Muscle isn’t just about aesthetics (though let’s be honest…it’s the best contouring trick I know). It’s metabolic. It’s protective. It supports our joints, keeps our bones strong, and helps us maintain skin integrity.

When you had Taco Bell at 8pm and woke up looking like a cinnamon twist with eyelids… 🌮🥴 Puffy. Inflamed. Regretting nothing… but still need to face the day.

Here are 5 ways I de-puff like a pro (even when I don’t act like one) 😬:

1️⃣ Cooling under-eye patches: not just for aesthetics, they actually do help soothe and shrink puffiness. Bonus points if you keep them in the fridge.
2️⃣ Cold tools: (or frozen peas, let’s be real) over patches OR solo. Lymphatic drainage + instant wake-up call.
3️⃣ Vibration plate: I gave my Power Plate to my niece (loved it but it was big) and downsized to a compact version for my office. Proven to boost lymph flow FAST.
4️⃣ Walk outside: even 10 mins of fresh air helps. Movement + circulation = less puff.
5️⃣ Lift, stretch, sweat: The gym doesn’t care that you ate nachos 🤣

Sensing a theme here? Just MOVE your body and watch the puff fade.

✨ Warm and hydrating, it soothes while helping your body fight
✨ Bonus points if you add honey + lemon for extra comfort 💛
