Statement on the U.S. Department of Education’s actions to carry out the presidential executive order declaring English the country’s official language. We strongly condemn the U.S. Department of Education’s underhanded actions to remove critical learning supports for #emergentbilingual (EB) students. The removal of the Department’s 2015 guidance threatens the educational rights of EB students, who comprise 44% of LA Unified’s student body, as well as school districts’ ability to ensure that EB students are properly assessed, evaluated, integrated, and supported through holistic programming towards the goal of becoming proficient in English. Statement on the Passing of Wallis Annenberg from Melanie Lundquist, Co-Founder and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors It is with great sadness that I mourn the passing of a dear friend and impactful mentor Wallis Annenberg.
