The Bay Area Hip Hop Archives (BAHHA) is a collaborative legacy project between Oakland-based Hip Hop artist Jahi, his company Microphone Mechanics, and The African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AAMLO). BAHHA’s mission is to establish a repository for Bay Area Hip Hop artists, activists, educators, and culture keepers who have made significant contributions to Hip Hop culture in the Bay Area by building special collections including various artifacts from their Hip Hop timeline to live at AAMLO for perpetuity. ![It seems every other story and post recently has something to do with black trauma and negativity, the effects of which can be devastating, especially when many of us experience loss and anguish firsthand. Our pain is often reflected, celebrated, and ridiculed on social media and in the news, effectively normalizing it through repetition - but pain is not normal. There's a lot of trauma in the world to process, and that trauma can lead to depression.
In the black community, mental health issues are compounded by the stress of systemic racism. Seeking care is often stigmatized as weakness, though; only one in three black people who struggle with mental health issues will receive appropriate treatment. Plus, we generally don't trust the medical establishment, with its history of misdiagnosing and exploiting us for profit and in the name of medical advancement.
