I remember as a child in Greece we would CANCEL all plans if it rained. How funny that seems to me now, living in Northern Europe! If you are visiting Paris, don’t fear the rain. Lmk if you’re also in the clumsy club!! This is… NOT A CROISSANT: part 2 of my series where I try traditional pastries from different regions of France! I’ve just spent some time in the south west, and I found possibly the best food of all of France in that region. I take you to Bordeaux, where I tried Canelés! These are magical not just because of the flavour but I’m most enthused by the texture, which is spongey and bouncy and wonderful. Verdict? I could eat 100 of these, and that exact gluttony is what saved me from my clumsy disaster, thank goodness I didn’t drop my only one. My weirdest hobby is checking out the French school menu every time I pass, wbu? The quality of state school meals in France speaks volumes to how much respect there is to good food and diet in this country and I am GENUINELY checking their menus for dinner party ideas 🙈 There must be a vegetable starter, a warm main course, CHEESE of course, and dessert. Plus a goûter (afternoon snack) later in the day. The minimum time at the table (set by the ministry of education) is 30 minutes. Am I the only one who is impressed? How was food at your school, if you even had any provided? I still cannot believe this exists… 📍 Mousse in the 4e A brunch café and a hair salon at the same time, Mousse is literally all my life priorities combined. I value my hair so much, but I value food even more, so here I am risking it all to test this for you (i.e. the menu was too tempting) Verdict: I am super impressed by the talent of the team at Mousse - both the chefs and the stylists. That salmon croissant was unreal and I’ll be going back to try the other creations. Wait for it 😂 Honestly, of all Paris fashion stereotypes, this one is the most true, tote bags are EVERYWHERE (red lipstick is not). And this one from littlesouvenir_ is my FAVOURITE for obvious reasons. #ad I think the reality is a little bit about pastries, but also Paris is a walkable city, we need water, snacks, layers, sunglasses and umbrellas (on the same day). littlesouvenir_ has a whole collection that I adore called Bon Appettit! You can get the croissant bag so we can match or the ‘tote baguette’ which cracked me up! Bisous! FR 🇫🇷 Franchement, parmi tous les clichés sur la mode parisienne, celui-là est le plus vrai : les tote bags sont PARTOUT (les lèvres rouges, pas vraiment). Taking advantage of the summer holidays, I’ve now visited even more of France and I’d love to take you with me on a gastronomic tour of pastries! Save the BEST summer activity in Paris ⬇️ It can be hard to motivate your friends to get together in summer, when everyone goes on holiday, but this should do the trick 😉 You reserve your boat (we booked at sunset because why not), bring your ingredients and some drinks, and your bestie who you trust to drive. Paris croissant guides pt2: VIRAL You’ve heard of these ones, but are they worth the hype, and sometimes insane queues? Here are my HONEST reviews: 1: Philippe Conticini, viral for the giant croissant. The giant croissant is €32 so beware! It doesn’t taste like a classic croissant maybe a bit more like brioche, but it’s absolutely delicious. And it keeps well - it’s good the next day and the next and the next. 2: Mamiche, viral because it’s pretty good?? I’m not totally sure about the source of virality here - it’s just a good neighbourhood boulangerie (with a beautiful logo). But at lunch the queues get crazy. Worth going if you’re in the neighbourhood anyway. 3: Cédric Grolet, viral for his aesthetic baking videos. As for substance? I didn’t find the viennoiseries or the patisseries groundbreaking - this is Paris and we have a lot of good stuff. So pay €50 for breakfast or queue for 2 hours for a tarte? No thanks. 4: Du Pain et des Idées, viral for the gorgeous gold gilded interiors. This IS worth a trip, though it’s a little out of the centre. The decor is gorgeous and the pastries are also great. Be aware it’s about double the price of a normal bakery, so a croissant around €2.40. 5: Maison d’Isabelle, viral for being the actual best. You’ve heard me say it before, this one is gold. My absolute favourite place to spend a sunny afternoon in summer. Quiet, peaceful, still a true hidden gem. Number 8: Maison Élysée only opened last year and it is a small wonderful exhibit of inner workings of the presidential palace. At the café you can order pastries made by the president’s actual chef. Like, what?! Number 9: Angelina hot chocolate is of course famous, but did you know you can have it INSIDE the Chateau de Versailles? Also an excellent, though slightly expensive, lunch option. Paris firefighters are just built different 👏🏼 Save this for next year if you didn’t know: the Bal des Pompiers is an iconic street party hosted by each fire department the night before Bastille Day (13 July) to raise funds.
