- After a little over 10 months, I made the decision to bring my breast milk journey to an end. I was shocked at how emotional the decision was - disappointed and guilt-ridden that I couldn't make it to at least 12 months, sad that the journey hadn't turned out as I had once hoped and dreamed of as a first time mum, but above everything, proud that I had given my baby girl life and the energy she needed to keep fighting her disease and amazed that I made it this far when it is perfectly normal to give up sooner or not breastfeed at all (I was a formula-fed baby after all!). When our journey first began together, she failed to put on the weight she needed to as she struggled with feeds. We overcame it all together and she got back on the curve with a little supplementary help from bottles. Then, even with her tumor, at 3 months, it all finally clicked and we both got into a rhythm of exclusively breastfeeding during visiting hours, but this blissful period was short-lived as she was fitted with a feeding tube after her first surgery when she became unable to drink anything properly. It was heartbreaking that this special thing between mother and child was involuntarily torn away from us, but much more so that she was reduced to "drinking" through her nose. Even without a tube, her chemotherapy treatment meant that our breastfeeding chapter had come to an end. After her next surgery, the two of us then spent agonising days and nights with me holding back tears as she panicked and screamed at the bottle while she overcame her tube-dependency and feeding aversion when her tube was abruptly removed with no warning or period to ease her back into oral feeds. But before she was transferred back and I could no longer stay with her, we got there. During the time she was in hospital, I pumped around the clock in the hopes that some part of my immune system would kick in to help her. I was told by senior nurses that they had never seen such dedication to continuing in such stressful circumstances and that I should rest or else I wouldn't be able to produce milk even if I wanted to, but I kept going and kept going. For as long as she didn't give up, neither did I. CONT 📝
- This time exactly 1 year ago to the minute, you changed our lives forever. There are many more things I want to say, but while we enjoy our day with you I'll leave it at this: Thank you for making the world a better place. Happy birthday, Little One! ♥️
- What a special day for a very special girl♥️ We mixed Western and Japanese birthday traditions for an unforgettable day for us all - as if this miracle wasn't unforgettable already! - starting with presents (of course!), slightly grumpy photos because playtime with said presents wasn't long enough 😅, her first homemade baby-friendly birthday cake (comment CAKE if you'd like the recipe I used!), followed by a post-cake-smash outfit change and the Japanese traditions of carrying mochi and playing "Erabitori" to predict her future (because now we can actually resume thinking about that! 🥹) and finally a call from Grandma in the UK 🥰. More details on the Japanese celebrations after I finish catching up with our Okinawa trip photos, but while you wait, try and guess how heavy one of those bad boys weighs and you'll get an idea of how incredibly strong our little panda warrior truly is (and why she was back to slightly grumpy again in the last photo 😅)!
