This beautiful viewpoint is back open in Petra! There are a few ways that you can see the Treasury from above and this one requires the least amount of effort. It does cost an extra 10JOD per person and you can pay for a ticket at the kiosk right by the stairs. This is also where you can buy your electronic cart tickets. Once you do the quick climb up the stairs a lovely Bedouin gentleman will have a perfect photo and video spot all set up for you. You can take your own photos and videos but he is also on standby to give you a full photoshoot in exchange for tips. When I went, it wasn’t very busy at all and there was hardly a wait to get photos and videos. Didn’t feel rushed at all. You can see how busy it is from the bottom of the Treasury so if you want to spend a good amount of time getting your photos, wait to go up until it’s not so crowded. I wasn’t sure if this would be worth it but it totally was and I’m happy to see this spot has reopened to the public. First and hopefully last time I ever experience engine failure mid-air. Traveling from IAD to MUC. Just a few minutes after takeoff there was a loud noise, the plane did what I can only describe as a shutter, and at the same time the lights flickered and all the seat back entertainment screens went black. The plane then stopped climbing and started turning. I was already connected to the WiFi and immediately started tracking the flight on flightradar24 and confirmed we had stopped gaining altitude and were heading back towards IAD. A few minutes later, after a lot of confusion and concerned looks from passengers, the flight deck came over the intercom and confirmed we had lost the left engine. We would then have to circle the airport dumping fuel until we reached a weight that was safe to land. The screens eventually turned back on and displayed the humorous IAD to IAD splash screen.  Once we did land, we were greeted with emergency vehicles. The plane was inspected and luckily we didn’t have to do an emergency evacuation and were towed back to the gate. Major kudos to the pilot and the flight crew who got us safely back on the ground. My barometer for panic is always looking at the flight attendants demeanor and they looked unfazed in their jump seats which made me feel better.  I’m a very logical person so I know that this is a very rare occurrence. It occurs in less than one per one million flights. And I also know that crew is trained to handle this and planes are designed to stay in the air even with a single engine failure. This isn’t an airline specific issue either.  Big thanks to Anne in the concourse D united Lounge who got us rebooked and back on our way to Munich. She even got our bags redirected in what was probably record time and they were waiting for us at our final destination. If you have any status and access to the airline’s lounge, that’s where you want to go get help with your flights if you fine your itinerary delayed or cancelled.  Full cockpit and IAD conversation for this incident can be found on YouTube.
