HENDERSON PROJECT I have to highlight the craftsmanship on this space! We worked with S+L Millworks, a custom millwork shop in Tampa. All the woodwork and trim was custom made and beautifully handcrafted in a beautiful finish sapele wood. They did wood panel on the two window walls, and trim and casings on the windows. We did matching sapele crown molding and baseboards throughout. Below the windows, we designed custom window seat with hidden storage storage below. S+L executed everything beautifully. We sourced an antique oak door, and they were able to not only repair it, but modify it to fit the opening in the space. DESIGNER TIP 03: My FAVORITE Designer Tip to date! I’m always sharing this tip with friends, so I had to share with you all as well. This is a tool that I use when I am working on projects that have a strict or tight budget. We want to give them the same designer look in their space, but have to stick to a tighter budget. Some projects allow for us to use really high quality and high budget pieces, but sometimes we have to prioritize the budget to other areas of the project. I wish this was an AD for Google Lens, just a tool I keep up my sleeve. You can use this for ANYTHING! BEFORE/AFTER 🙃 Quick console table flip. I’ve had my eye on the arhaus Conrad Sideboard for FOREVER… IYKYK Not saying I accomplished that, but I wanted to bring in the feel of that piece. I sanded down the surfaces that I could reach, leaving the inset sections the lighter stain color. I stained everything with a Varathane stain, in the color black, knowing that the brown wood would still show through. It gave me the texture and variation of color I wanted. I also cut off the old legs and added 8” turned wood legs, for height and character. And then lastly added the CUTEST hardware, tear-drop drawer pulls, and a cabinet latch for the doors. Happy New Year ✨ Check out the LAST O’Connor Interiors project of 2022. What a treat to wrap up this project right before the New Year! We finished this one yesterday, Dec. 31, and it was so special to be able to welcome the clients into their newly renovated home for the New Year, 2023. This project was a first, and maybe last of it’s kind for O’Connor Interiors. 😅 The extreme challenges of working in a 5th-wheel, my hat is off to those in the industry who specialize in recreational vehicles. (Have you seen those sprinter van-life renovation videos?! 😲) All the non-conventional materials, and size/weight restrictions make the challenge. But we love our clients, thankfully they understood the challenges going into it, and it was so worth it to make their home feel like a luxury escape on wheels. DESIGNER TIP [02] Ceiling fans. I haven’t always been a fan of ceiling fans 😅 But that was just because I hadn’t taken the time to find designer-friendly ceiling fans. I’ve been tempted to put a chandelier or cool light fixture in every room, but there are spaces where you’re going to need a fan. Unfortunately the quickest way to bring down a room, is to stick an old 90’s ceiling fan up there. Whether it’s actually dated, or just a builder grade standard boob-light fan, it’s bring down the design level. But you need a fan, so what do you do?? Thankfully updating a dated fan, or just initially opting for a more modern option, is such an easy way to give your space a facelift. Look for those sleek lines, and more streamlined models. If you’re wanting to lean traditional, look for the more typically traditional 5-blade silhouette. Or if you’re wanting to go modern, the current modern style often features 3-blades. You can use your ceiling fan to make a bold statement, by choosing colors that stand out, like a black, chrome, or even a wood finish. Or if you’re looking for a more subtle functional option, go with a clean white fan (or something that will blend with your ceiling. TIP: This is a great option for rooms that have a lower (8ft or less) ceiling, since you don’t want something that is going to feel Ike it’s coming down on your visually. It serves the purpose of air circulation, but it doesn’t distract from the design and just blends in with the ceiling. There is a balance, and your ceiling fan is just as much a design element as any other piece in the room. If you pick the right one, it can be just what you needed to elevate the style of your entire space. You probably don’t need full-service Interior Design services to figure this out, but maybe you just need a second opinion because you’re going back and forth. DESIGNER TIP [01] Furniture sets & matching furniture. For me.. it’s a no. Unless you’re just looking to stick furniture in a room and live with it, you’re not going to get what you’re looking for with a set of furniture. In theory it’s good, it’s made to go together, so it’s going to look good right?? Not really…. You lose depth and interest in a space when all the furniture is the same. Or all the fabrics. Or all the colors. Or all the shapes. I go on… You want to pick furniture that compliments each other, or even accentuate the other pieces. Mix textures and materials. Mix shapes. In the living room, if the couch I select is upholstered with a fabric, I might pull in some leather accent chairs. And I would be sure to incorporate some other textures and colors in the pillows. In the master bedroom, if the bed frame is a matte black iron four-poster bed, I would pull in a warmer wood nightstand and lots of bed cushions to off-set it. Skip the furniture sets. Take a little bit more time and select different pieces that will ultimately make your space feel thought out with a curated designer touch. Floor Plan Drafting [Part 1] Semi-transparent tracing paper and my mat ruler give me a guide, but it’s all free flowing from there. This is brainstorming territory. I take into account the space that we have, the furniture pieces we would like to fit into the space, and what goes in between. There will usually be several drafts of these before I take it to the computer to build it in the 2D/3D modeling software.
