When three children with different congenital heart defects each needed life-saving transplants, a multidisciplinary team at NewYork-Presbyterian came together to help them in one groundbreaking approach. In one of the first split-root domino partial heart transplants in the U.S., Hend, now 11 years old, received a new heart, and the healthy valves from her old heart were used to save two boys, Teddy, 4, and John, 2. Today, all three children are thriving, thanks to the innovation, expertise, and teamwork that is at the center of all our care.

A single act of generosity led to a medical milestone at #NYPColumbia: three lives saved through one living liver donation. In a first-of-its-kind procedure for adult patients in the U.S., transplant surgeons successfully performed a living donor domino split-liver transplant — a rare and complex surgery involving four patients and four operating rooms running simultaneously.

In the procedure last month, an altruistic donor gave part of their liver to a patient whose liver did not work properly for them due to a metabolic disorder but otherwise functioned normally. That patient’s original liver was then split and transplanted into two additional recipients.

“This advancement is a testament to the talented team at NewYork-Presbyterian, our experience in the field, and our commitment to finding innovative ways to increase the chances of patients getting a liver transplant and improving outcomes for both donors and recipients,” said Dr. Tomoaki Kato, chief of transplant surgery at #NYPColumbia.

The landmark achievement opens new possibilities for expanding the donor pool.

“This domino split-liver transplant was unique because it was initiated with the gift of life from an altruistic living donor, whose operation was performed robotically,” said Dr. Jason Hawksworth, surgical director of adult liver transplantation at #NYPColumbia. “These four operations took a lot of coordination and communication, with months of extensive, logistical planning from a fantastic team to make it happen.”

“This is the kind of endeavor you only find at a place like NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia,” said Dr. Alyson Fox, medical director of the Adult Liver Transplant Program at #NYPColumbia. “We have the talent and tools to take on the most medically complex patients and perform the most innovative surgeries. We had tremendous support to make this come to fruition, and it was a massive success.”

When Ashley Merchant was four months pregnant, she and her husband, Mark, learned their baby boy, whom they would name Finnley, had a life-threatening mass, known as a lymphatic malformation, growing in his neck and throat, obstructing his airway.

Determined to save Finnley and avoid complications that could endanger Ashley, the Merchants turned to #NYPWeillCornell’s Dr. Julianne Lauring, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, and Dr. Steven Rosenblatt, an otolaryngologist who specializes in pediatric head and neck surgery, at #NYPKomansky of Children’s Hospital of New York. “It was one of the most complex cases that I’ve seen,” said Dr. Rosenblatt.

In order for Finnley to breathe after birth, the multidisciplinary care team performed an EXIT procedure (ex utero intrapartum treatment) when Ashley was 35 weeks pregnant. The rare procedure required doctors to perform a C-section and first deliver only Finnley’s head, neck, and shoulders, which allowed him to still receive oxygen from the placenta. While Dr. Lauring held Finnley in her hands, Dr. Rosenblatt successfully secured his airway before completing the delivery. “New York-Presbyterian is uniquely positioned for a case like this. We have experts in our fields all working together,” said Dr. Lauring. “The opportunity to tell Ashley the baby’s here and alive felt so good!”

After his birth, Finnley needed a series of treatments, called sclerotherapy, to shrink the lymphatic malformation, which extended across his neck, armpit, throat, pressing against his airway. Dr. Bradley Pua, chief of interventional radiology at #NYPWeillCornell, specializes in the treatment.

Instead of surgically removing the mass, he used a catheter to withdraw the fluid and injected a medication to prevent it from growing back. At six months, Finnley was strong enough to go home.

Today, Finnley is healthy and meeting developmental milestones. “No matter what challenges are presented to this team of amazing doctors, they do whatever it takes to find the right care for Finnley,” said Ashley.

On May 27, 2025, Lisa Ullman and her nephew, Donovan Campuzano, were part of a groundbreaking procedure at #NYPWeillCornell: the first fully robotic living donor liver transplant in New York, in which the minimally invasive technique was performed on both the donor and recipient.

Lisa, 63, had been living with primary biliary cholangitis, an autoimmune disease that damages the liver, for 24 years when her health took a turn for the worse late last year. Her hepatologist, #NYPWeillCornell’s Dr. Robert Brown, told her it was time to pursue a liver transplant.

Her family and friends rallied to find a #livingdonor, and Donovan, 24, didn’t hesitate to volunteer. “My aunt is the most generous person you could meet,” he said. “I didn’t have to think about it, I know she would do the same for me.”

“When he was growing up, we were always part of each other’s lives. He’s a special kid,” Lisa says of Donovan.

The multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Juan Rocca and Dr. Benjamin Samstein, included Dr. Peter Liou, Dr. Dustin Carpenter, and Dr. Russell Rosenblatt. The surgery marked another major milestone for NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine’s robotic liver surgery program. In April the team also performed the state’s first fully robotic liver transplant using a deceased donor organ.

“Seeing both the donor and recipient walk out of the hospital after two fully robotic operations—performed at the same time by two dedicated robotic transplant teams—is something I’ll never forget,” said Dr. Juan Rocca, surgical director for the #NYP Weill Cornell Medicine Liver Cancer Program and attending surgeon in the Division of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery. “It’s a powerful example of what’s possible when innovation and teamwork come together for the benefit of our patients.”

Now recovering at home, Lisa said of her experience, “We have the top doctors, and I felt so confident in their hands. I hope it helps people consider organ donation: that they can be the receivers but also give the gift of life.”

Born with half a heart, a rare condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, Jack Foley underwent three open-heart surgeries before the age of three to re-engineer the way his heart pumps blood. Now 14, he returned to #NYPMorganStanley of Children’s Hospital of New York, where he has been receiving care since birth, for his first procedure in over 11 years.

The routine cardiac catheterization was to check how well Jack’s heart is working with the special surgical setup that helps blood flow properly in people born with only one functioning heart chamber, known as Fontan circulation.

According to Dr. Christopher Petit, pediatric interventional cardiologist, Jack’s results were outstanding. “That’s a testament to how well Jack takes care of himself—he’s active, athletic, and really engaged in his health.”

Jack is already back to playing hockey and baseball. “Jack lives his life the way he would with or without this condition,” shared his mother, Lauren Foley. “He doesn’t let it define him.”

Patricia Brown is a mom of two, a farm worker, and a lifelong fitness enthusiast who competes in extreme obstacle course races. But eight years ago, a minor injury led to tests that uncovered a diagnosis she never expected: scoliosis.

As her condition progressed over the years, Patricia, 65, pushed through daily, excruciating pain and numbness in her back and legs. “I thought I was standing straight,” she said, “but people told me I was completely crooked.” Eventually, the curve in her lumbar spine progressed to 65 degrees and caused a visible lump on her back.

After several doctors advised against surgery, Patricia was referred to Dr. Zeeshan Sardar, an orthopedic spine surgeon at #NYPOchSpine. “He was confident he could help me,” she said. “And I just felt I had the right doctor and the right hospital.”

Patricia’s surgery required careful planning to straighten her spine. Using robotics to map out exactly where each screw should go, Dr. Sardar placed three rods and multiple screws with precision. The team also used intraoperative CT scanning and real-time imaging to ensure accuracy throughout the procedure. But the technology was only one part of the equation. “We focus on optimizing everything before surgery—nutrition, medical conditions, bone health, and pain—so when the patient comes to surgery, they’re at their best,” said Dr. Sardar. “That way, the outcome can be the best.”

After surgery, Patricia was walking within days. When she returned home to Pennsylvania, her sons welcomed her back like a superhero. “They expected to see Superwoman walk through the door—and that’s exactly what they got,” she said. “They had a mom back, a happy mom.”

Now pain-free, Patricia is building her strength and endurance back up and set her sights on running a 5K race. “I’ve got my life back,” she said.

(4/4) “I can’t believe it’s been a year,” says cardiologist Dr. Jennifer Haythe after reuniting with her patient Nadine Davis at #NYPColumbia one year after Nadine received the first heart-lung-liver transplant ever performed at NewYork-Presbyterian.

“Yesterday I walked over a mile,” Nadine says with a smile. Her triumph reflects not only her strength and perseverance after years of living with pulmonary arterial hypertension but the expertise and innovation of a multidisciplinary team committed to pushing the boundaries of transplant care.

These complex surgeries required an extremely high level of coordination, Dr. Haythe says. “It’s like an orchestra, and when it works, it’s beautiful.”

Today, Nadine has a second chance at life – and Dr. Haythe will be cheering her on every step of the way. “You’re not only my doctor,” Nadine tells Dr. Haythe, “but you’re also a part of my family,”

(3/4) “The day I was going to go home, they had a celebration for me,” recalls Nadine Davis, who was discharged from #NYPColumbia in June 2024 after receiving the hospital’s first triple organ transplant involving a heart. “I did not expect to see so many people!” Nurses, doctors, and staff who had been part of Nadine’s journey—from diagnosis to transplant to recovery—had gathered with balloons and gifts to wish her well.

“Nadine is going home! [I’m] so excited,” said Dr. Jennifer Haythe, director of the adult pulmonary hypertension program at #NYPColumbia. Having been Nadine’s cardiologist for a decade, Dr. Haythe was overjoyed to see Nadine’s battle with end-stage heart, lung, and advanced liver disease come to an end.

“This is a massive team effort,” says Dr. Haythe. “You can’t have a successful triple organ transplant unless you have excellence in so many different areas – that’s what makes NewYork-Presbyterian so special.”

(2/4) “I remember waiting [in the hospital] for my organs,” says triple transplant patient Nadine Davis. “It was my 50th birthday, and a group of nurses came and celebrated with me. I was so shocked!”

Days later, Dr. Jennifer Haythe, director of the adult pulmonary hypertension program at #NYPColumbia, called her patient with exciting news: “She said, ‘Nadine, we’ve got a transplant for you,’” Nadine recalls. “And I started screaming!”

Nadine had experienced a decade of declining health due to pulmonary arterial hypertension that led to end-stage lung disease, end-stage heart disease, and advanced liver disease.

On April 29th, when a heart, liver, and lungs became available for transplant, Nadine put her full trust in her care team. “Going into surgery, I did not have any fear,” she says.

After months of preparation and planning, Nadine received her triple organ transplant the next day. The heart and lungs were transplanted first by Dr. Koji Takeda, surgical director for adult heart transplant at #NYPColumbia and Dr. Philippe Lemaitre, surgical director of the lung transplant program at #NYPColumbia, followed by the liver, led by Dr. Tomoaki Kato, chief of the Division of Abdominal Organ Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at #NYPColumbia.

The surgery lasted 14 hours. “All together, the procedure went really flawlessly,” says Dr. Kato.

(1/4) “We had never done a triple organ transplant here at #NYPColumbia that involved a heart,” says Dr. Jennifer Haythe, director of the adult pulmonary hypertension program, about the moment in early 2024 when she realized this complex surgery was the only way to save her patient Nadine Davis’s life.

“When the doctor said I was going to need so many organs, I was like, what?” recalls Nadine. “She’s talking to me, but it’s like I was not there.”

When Dr. Haythe met Nadine in 2012, Nadine was living with pulmonary arterial hypertension—a condition that can lead to difficulty breathing and heart failure. After more than a decade of care, Nadine’s health had declined to the point of having end-stage lung and end-stage heart disease, which then caused advanced liver disease.

“Very few triple organ transplants have been done in the country, as well as in the world,” said Dr. Tomoaki Kato, chief of the Division of Abdominal Organ Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at #NYPColumbia. An expert multidisciplinary team assembled to coordinate every detail—from the intricate timing of each surgery to Nadine’s post-transplant recovery.

“It has to be a perfect heart, perfect lung, and perfect liver to make this happen,” says Dr. Kato.
