It’s been a full season since my dad’s passing opened a portal of change.
I came to TO to visit old friends and make new ones.
My skin turned deeper olive, parts of me that don’t usually meet the sun.
Baring parts of me that don’t usually meet anyone.
Tears in public.
Helping myself gratefully to the vast generosity and kindness of people around me, being fed by imranian until the emptiness of grief is replaced with warm unctuous starch.
I’m doing okay, better than okay most of the time.
A few days ago I discovered just how extraordinarily hard on myself I’ve been for being “disconnected from flow” (i.e. disclipined music practice). In the upheaval of newness, I let my imposter sydrome take the driver’s seat again, and it’s been a real wrestle to get her to the back of the bus, where she can sulk all she likes, but she’s not driving.
I recognized that exploring new paths requires its own attention- I wrote all about this in my MFA thesis in ’22, and began re-reading it. I needed to remind myself of the lessons I had taught myself. Of the artist practices that I value.
And to rely again on my deepest self-trust. After what I discovered in myself a few months ago, I have no more rationale to doubt my ferocity.
Any lingering tensions are being shaken out.
I re-commit to my music. To playing seriously, to showing up to sessions where sometimes something happens.
Let’s just see what happens. 2025-08-15 01:13:51 .. 252 +76% 26 -11%

1949-2025

In his final round of generosity, my father passed peacefully at a moment where his loved ones were close enough to say goodbye in person. He followed up with his signature masti by providing symbols of his mischief and playful spirit in a multitude of ways: visiting in a dream, having bulbuls sing at 3am and filling the street with the scent of jasmine.
This past week, our home was filled with our closest friends & family feeding us, pitching in with the millions of decisions and details that are necessary in times of change, and sharing their stories and love of him. In his final act of generosity, my father brought our community together in collaboration, work and play.
I’ve received assurance that he has transitioned to a place of freedom and boundless joy.
Although I’m heartbroken to lose material access to him, I’m so deeply grateful that he is with his parents, his beloved Dada Beni, his brothers, his ancestors, his dog Snoopy.
And I’m so grateful to my friends & family & elders who have brought so much ease to this time. We’ll miss you 💙 2025-05-03 10:36:29 Nirmal Parma.. 242 +69% 67 +129%

Fringe Dump

1. Took a train to Edinburgh this August to hang at the Fringe.
2. Saw some of the best and worst shows ever- both were equally inspiring. Gettin me off my ass to get on with writing my 2nd play, stop overthinking and imagine a life beyond my studio.
3. We started the week watching kanangill and he set the bar incredibly high. Everything lo-key sucked after that.
4. Adamkadabra was gracious enough to let me crash his busking set on the Royal Mile.
5. We played a shiny new song for the first time. Thanks ravi.kukikol for the footage!
6. Of The Land On Which We Meet by nadjinang circus (Australia) was one of the best physical theatre pieces I’ve seen. An abstract narrative exploring belonging to land, ownership, indigenous identity through circus, it was breathtaking. The choreo was rigorously in service to the story and the acrobatic tableaux felt unique, inventive, and pushing circus beyond spectacle.
7. Adam n I waiting for a morning show of Acension by dan.hazelwood, who we met in a cafe the night before. Brilliant piece.
8. Saw a midnight show that was also an interactive video game.
9. By mid-week, I had basically just become a show-bot, trying to cram in as much as I could before we left.

I identify as an interdisciplinary artist. This means that I weave from many disciplinary threads. I make music, but I need to draw to figure out what I’m writing, and I write to know what I’m thinking. I’m building a soundscape like a moodboard so that I know what the world of my next EP is. I’ve always had a running sketchbook practice to keep my thoughts alive, to shape them in my hands. World-building is always interdisciplinary, and I even prefer the term “anti-disciplinary” because my truest value is that the walling-off between categories comes from historically harmful intentions. But in the worlds as they stand now, it is amongst the interdependence between things that I find my own alignment. I can’t choose one thing and why would I? I’m designed to draw, sing, dance, beat drums, speak poetically, cook and feast. So I’m learning: how to weave between, how through the embodied practice of drawing and writing, playing with neon pigments, this is how I write songs.

This is a spell to the next body of work I intend to birth: I wish it to be thoughtful, poetic and wild. 2024-08-06 14:35:22 I ident.. 50 -65% 8 -73%
So. Many. Photos.

Stopmotion asks a lot as a technique. We shot 3 Act Circus over 7 nights, and it was pure joy. Mannbutte & SherifMokbel brought these characters to life. I folded these three inner parts of myself outward: a Detective, a Vamp, a Clown. This project was all about integration, of my different artist-selves and my different inner-selves. Accepting my analytic self, my intuitive self, my whimsical self. We’re all many people folded into a single body. Unfolded, we become many photos.

They let us draw ALL over their gallery space. We set up installations of each set design in the video, including the bathtub. I performed in the Vamp’s costume: a sari with a 6m pallu that draped from an elevated platform to the ground where the audience watched below. This was in 2011, when we partnered with thejamjardubai to launch 3 Act Circus. They were one of the earliest artist-centered initiatives in the country at that time. The arts scene was so small that you could pick up the phone and ask for crazy favors and it was like, Sure! That sounds fun! We exhibited stills from the video, works of art in their own right, by mannbutte & sherifmokbel, and the massive canvas backdrops that fatspatrol created, and later won an award for. The video was accepted into the Gulf Film Festival. It was a crazy, beautiful night. If you were there, drop me a line below because I’d LOVE to hear what it was like for you.

This project had squad magic. We started as strangers. I was a little mouse and couldn’t believe someone like mannbutte would agree to come on board, which happened 4 days before we started shooting. And he pulled in his colleague, sherifmokbel. There’s no question that it was their artistry that elevated each frame, to the point that we were shocked by the results when we watched the dailies.

Fatspatrol and I had been working for 6 weeks in the garage: while she tattooed the backdrops and set pieces with her mark-making called “The Animal”, I stitched the jester’s hat, assembled props, worked and reworked the storyboards and shot lists. I remember jumping out of bed every morning, I couldn’t WAIT to start work. That’s that magical full-body-hell-yes which I now centre in my creative practice.

And the rest of the crew akshaysardana, natashacarella, raadrock, rtrup, priyankavanand, jotianand literally just showed up just when we needed someone to step in to take slate and shot notes, blow bubbles, perform as my character stand-in while I worked with Fatima on the animation.

3 Act Circus brought together my interdisciplinary practice of music, theatre, film, animation and my deepest motivator, community. Love nailing a blueprint!

Getting our hands dirty with 3 Act Circus. I wanted an analog process for this music video. If it had been possible, I’d have shot on 16mm and cut it on a Steinbeck, same as the first stop-motion I ever made. But it was 2010 and CGI and hyper-polished vectors were the shit. It was so amazing to meet a group of artists who felt the same as I did, that working with our hands keeps us deeply embodied: fatspatrol, the amazing illustrator, mannbutte & sherifmokbel the photographers.

I wrote 3 Act Circus in 2009 with my brother, Karan Anand, in Dubai. We had just finished recording my first ever demo in his home studio, and he started goofing around with this tasty cello riff. I started seeing these images of these characters, a detective, a femme fatale, and a jester and quickly started scribbling lyrics. We wrote and recorded the song in under an hour. The images for the music video were parcelled up in that subconscious download, and a few years later I unravelled them with the help of fatspatrol, mannbutte & sherifmokbel. We created this video in a sweaty garage from over ten thousand still images. This was the first big project where I combined my different skills as an artist: animation, scenography, direction and music. I felt completely whole, integrated, fulfilled by this work and the magic of the collaborations. Now that I have the tools to properly publish it, help me hit 100k views on the video on Youtube! 2024-07-19 15:24:49 I wrote 3 Act Circus in 2.. 157 +10% 16 -45%
What happens when an illustrator meets an animator? When music meets video? I’m always refining the recipe for a tasty collab, and working with fatspatrol was my starter. It was a total coincidence that my song 3 Act Circus heard an echo with Fat’s signature style of drawing, and the process of working together in that sweaty garage in 2011 felt like there’s no such thing as coincidence.

In August 2010, I made a music video in my parent’s garage in Dubai with 3 other artists and every single friend I could rope in for help. Auntie’s daughter came for tea and ended up on set, assisting shots. I milked every favour I could, started conversations with strangers in cafés and ended up borrowing their furniture for set pieces. The project fell together like a magical jigsaw, I found every prop I needed, and every set of hands swooped in at the nick of time. We shot this stop-motion piece called 3 Act Circus over 7 nights. My collaborators fatspatrol, mannbutte and sherifmokbel would finish a full day’s work and head round and we’d begin shooting at 7pm and finish at 3am. And then they went back to work the next morning and I got to work setting up the next day’s shoot. We were running on adrenaline, passion and a collective ache to feel creatively stimulated in a city that was ghosted by the financial crash at the time. I carved this behind-the-scenes from scraps of footage we took on our iphone 3’s pre-1080p. The music video was shot on first generation Canon 5D’s. This was the same year the Burj Khalifa was opened to public, one year before the first soledxb. And the same year I met gayamusic in a warehouse in Al Quoz.
