Big news: I’m moving to Paris!

I know I hinted at this in stories but it’s official!

Let’s start with the why:

First, I’ve always loved Paris. To me, it’s as magical as the movies make it out to be and I loved it from the moment I first visited 15 years ago. I spent 6 months there in 2019 and visit multiple times a year. So, if I’m going to live anywhere other than NYC, it’s going to be Paris.

Second, I’m a bit over NYC. I don’t share a lot of my personal life here because boundaries (you learn to put them up when people randomly show up to where you’re eating) but I will say there have been some things that have happened in the last year that have made me a bit fed up with the city. Throw in the fact that a lot of my friends are also leaving, having kids, or getting married so I think now is a good time for a change. (Plus, the city is getting too expensive and, while I figure out my next moves now that AI is killing blogs, it will be nice to be somewhere more affordable.)

So I am going to sell my stuff, ship whatever I don’t sell back to Texas, have someone take over my lease, and depart. My goal is to be gone by the end of the year.

As for the how:

Moving to France is a pain in the paperwork but they’ve made it a bit easier post-COVID. They don’t offer a digital nomad visa so I am going to apply for the long-term tourist visa (it’s easy to get when you are employed). I know a few people on it. That will allow me to stay in the EU and come and go as I please. After the year is up, we’ll see where I am with life.

I always feel Paris calling me. While NYC has my heart, I feel like Paris has my soul. I know it’s a cliché to be an American writer living in Paris but those Lost Generation artists might have been on to something. I can’t seem to escape Paris so why not really try to *really* live there? You only live once and I would rather not wonder. (After all, I can always come home if it doesn’t work out.)

Time for a new chapter!

August was a busy month! I did the most traveling I’ve done all year this month

It reinvigorated me! Made some big life changes (more to come on that!), made new friends, visited new places, communed with nature, and, overall, just had an amazing month.

But, sadly, August has slipped away into a moment in time! Some highlights:

1. Chain Lakes Trail in Washington
2. Eiffel Tower
3. Sunset in Lulea, Sweden
4. Skuleskogen National Park in Sweden
5. Hanging with davidlebovitz at my favorite wine bar in Paris (Septime La Cave)
6. Paris hangs with raimeetravel
7. The best view of the Eiffel Tower thanks to ihannahwilson
8. Incredible dancers at Edinburgh’s Military Tattoo
9. Edinburgh Castle
10. Street art in London
11. More street art from the great wrdsmth
12. Sunset in Edmonds, Washington
13. Friend reunion with reneeroaming alittlerainey and joel_pa.c

If you want to get off the beaten path in Sweden, hike Skuleskogen National Park.

Visiting here was the highlight of my recent trip to Sweden! Located in the High Coast about 5 hrs north of Stockholm, this park has birch and pine forests, marshes, coastal beaches, granite mountains, and awesome views of the Baltic.

The hikes are pretty easy, too. You’ll see lots of kids and dogs on the trails so it’s really accessible.

The highlight of the park is Slåttdalsskrevan, a massive rock crevice that cuts through the bedrock. It’s around 200 meters long and 30 meters deep. For safety reasons, you can’t walk through it anymore due to safety reasons but, if you come via the north side, you get a better view and can walk in a little bit. (The south entrance is completely closed off.)

Tips for visiting the park:

1. There are three entrances: South, North, and West, with the South gate being the busiest. Get there early if you’re driving as the parking lot is very small! To get to the park, you will definitely need a car. There are no other options.

2. The South gate trail to Slåttdalsskrevan is the shortest with the West gate trail providing the best landscape diversity (and fewest crowds).

3. The coastal trail is less strenuous and has beautiful pebble beaches, rocky headlands, and quiet pine forests. It sees the fewest hikers.

4. Hiking north to south (or vice versa) takes about 5 hrs, doing the South gate to the crevice and back takes 3ish hours, and there and back on the West trail is about 4 hours. I’m pretty fit and hike a bit fast so take that into consideration but I found the trails a lot easier than the suggested times on AllTrails and I stopped a lot for photos and video content.

5. Bring your own food and water as there are no facilities once you’re inside.

6. If you’re visiting in summer, bring bug spray as I found there to be loads of mosquitoes.

❗❗RANT❗❗

Can we get off our damn phones when we travel & just enjoy the moment?

I was recently at a hostel where everyone was on their phone or computer. It was depressing.

We walk with our headphones everywhere we go. We message our friends back home to stay up to date with the latest tea. We go to the same spots to get that one IG shot.

Let's remember we are on the road to meet people and see the world, not stare at our screens.

I’m not against tech.

Google Maps makes getting around easier. It's a lifesaver when you are in a foreign place.

Wondering why your friend isn’t at the appointed meeting spot on time? No problem! Now you can just ping them on WhatsApp!

Apps have made finding cheap flights, learning languages, and connecting with locals easier, too.

But, as much as smartphones have helped us, I think we’ve really lost one of the most beautiful aspects of travel: the ability to disconnect from back home. It's hard to grow and be present when you travel when you are still tethered to home.

Home is your comfort zone and you don't grow until you leave that behind.

I think too many people are missing out on the full travel experience because of ubiquitous smartphone use!!

Phones take us out of the moment too much, especially when we have our headphones plugged into them all the time.

Take all the photos and videos ya want but let’s not retreat into our phones when we feel slightly uncomfortable around strangers or silence.

Let’s interact with the people and places we are visiting!! I make it a point to walk down the street without headphones in or texting my friends all the time.

Observe the scenes around you!

Say hello to someone new!

You can’t make new friends at the bar when you have headphones in or are in a hostel on your laptop.

The magic of travel only happens when you are fully outside your comfort zone. If you're always on your phone, connected to back home, you're going to miss out.

Constant phone use is the enemy of travel.

Give yourself a time limit....then put away your phone and enjoy the moment and beauty in front of you!!

Your friends and Instagram can wait and your travels will be better for it. 2025-08-22 22:31:53 ❗❗RAN.. 629 -59% 54 -29%

One day, you are young and time seems to stretch out infinitely. You stare out at the horizon, pondering the exotic locations you’ll visit, the adventures you’ll have, and the people you’ll meet. You make plans, research trips, and save money.

But life, as it always does, gets in the way.

“Tomorrow,” you say. “I just have too many things to do right now.”

Time, which seemed so infinite a moment ago, passes quicker and quicker.

Each day, you get older and the responsibility of life grows, slowing you down like increasingly heavy hands holding your feet still.

Again, you say, “Tomorrow! I swear. The stars just need to align a little more.”

But here’s a secret: the stars will never align.

There is no perfect day to do anything.

Tomorrow, you’ll find another excuse.

Tomorrow, there will still be more bills to pay.

Tomorrow, there still won’t be “enough” money.

Tomorrow, there will still be someone’s wedding or birthday to attend.

Tomorrow, there will still be more planning to do.

Tomorrow, your fears will still be there.

Tomorrow, you will still second-guess yourself.

Tomorrow, you’ll say again, “Today isn’t the right day” until there are suddenly no more tomorrows.

There’s a reason why seniors, when interviewed, always tell people to chase their dreams, to not put off tomorrow what they can do today, to live in the moment. Life is short and time goes by faster than you think. “Don’t die wondering what might have been,” they will tell you.

If I had waited for the perfect day when my friend said he would join or when I had just a bit more money, I’d still be in my cubicle job.

The hardest part of any journey is stepping out the door.

But you have to go.

You have to do the hard thing.

Because you only get one chance in this world and you don’t want to look back wondering what might have been.

But, let me assure you, once you take that first step, you’ll see all the rest are easy.

So take that leap. Book that flight. Go on that trip. Start that hobby. Move overseas.

Because you don’t get a second chance and, one day, you’ll run out of tomorrows.

And then you’ll be left with nothing but sadness and regret. And no one wants that. 2025-08-16 19:05:22 .. 1,009 -35% 36 -53%

Scenes from my time in Paris:

1. Doing an Airbnb Experience of the Eiffel tower with one of Gustave Eiffel’s descendants. Was super fun and interesting to learn not only about the tower but the family too!

2. Another Airbnb Experience learning about Jacqueline Marval, a painter I had never even heard of before.

3. Fish based ramen from Kodawari Ramen. Super good!

4. Toraya tea house

5. Catching up with OG food writer davidlebovitz at my favorite wine bar, Septime La Cave.

6. Cave Canaille. Just discovered this. It might now be my third favorite wine bar in the city (2nd is Le Barav).

7. Bois de Boulogne.

8. Andia, good tapas spot.

9. and 10. Impressionist art at Musée Marmottan Monet.

The “Sinking House” in Paris is actually just an optical illusion created by sitting on a slanted grassy knoll in Montmartre. It’s a pretty cool effect…

….and I’m excited to take more cool pictures while I’m in Paris this week!

This trip to Paris is about a) finally getting long overdue video and photos (I just get so lazy about content while there lol), b) doing a lot of off the beaten path attractions, and c) exploring the few remaining neighborhoods I’ve never been to (I’m super excited about my tour of Paris’ Chinatown as I’ve never been!).

Paris marks the start of my first overseas trip since November!!! I’m way, way, WAY overdue for some big travel. I’ll be traveling around Europe for three (and a half?) weeks and I couldn’t be more excited to hit the road again!

DM me if you are in Paris this week as I’m likely to do a meet-up over the weekend!

Don’t travel without this one thing!

Ok, so last year my friend Wendy introduced zbiotics Pre-Alcohol to our friend group. It’s a pre-drink probiotic that helps you avoid those rough post-drinking mornings. I was skeptical at first because how many products claim to do that, right?

But let me tell you, this stuff works. Ever since I started taking it, I feel great the next day. I have so much more energy. I don’t sit around on my couch wondering what I’m doing with my life.

My entire friend group uses it all the time. Even if I’m going out for just one glass of wine, I take it.

And I take it with me whenever I travel and have gotten other friends, fellow travel writers, and even a tour guide in Peru onto them.

Pre-Alcohol really works. It ensures I can enjoy my nights out while still waking up with energy to have active days.

I can’t recommend it enough. Check out Pre-Alcohol before your next trip. Use the code NOMADICMATT to get 10% off. #ad 2025-07-11 22:19:56 Don’t travel .. 130 -92% 31 -59%
Today, a woman emailed me saying she wouldn’t visit NYC because it had “too many woke liberals.”

She was a boomer because who else has an AOL email account? I told her that it was sad she had traveled so much yet learned so little. I mean she said she had been to nearly every country in the world.

Imagine traveling so much in your lifetime but you won’t visit a city of 10 million because people might hold different political views than you. I mean what does she think of Europe if NYC is too liberal for her?

Maya Angelou said travel might not end bigotry or even make us friends but it might bring understanding.

Travel clearly has not done that for her. Or millions of people who view traveling not as an act of exploration to learn about other places but as photoshoot. Destinations are Disney and to be seen, photographed, and crossed off a checklist.

That’s not to say all travel has to be life changing. Sometimes ya just need a vacation at the beach.

But if a lifetime of travel has not made you even remotely more accepting of others, it is because you willfully wanted to keep a closed mind. You traveled for the checklist not to learn about any other culture in the world.

And that just seems so sad and wasteful. To have the privilege to travel and see the world and learn about the people in it and not grow as a human at all. What a waste. 2025-07-09 05:15:21 Today, a woman .. 2,915 +88% 196 +156%
Beat the heat in Europe!

While everyone roasts in Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Croatia, etc etc, summer in Europe for me is now all about exploring nature in the northern countries.

Save walking around cities for cooler weather and go hiking somewhere in Northern Europe.

It’s not as hot, less crowded, cheaper, and…well, let’s be honest, touching grass is always a good idea.

My simple formula for picking a travel credit card..

I think all the points and miles bloggers make picking the right credit card too complicated.

I’m a freak because I work in the biz so I have a ton of cards but most people don’t need more than a couple and, with hundreds of options to choose from, it can be confusing to pick a card. I know because I get emails from readers and texts from friends asking me for advice all the time!

So, follow the three steps in this post and simplify the process of getting a new card, lots of points, and free travel.

Your NON-TOURISTY Guide to Paris!

Everyone goes to Paris and wants to see Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the D’Orsay, and all the other famous monuments.

And yeah, all that stuff is amazing but there’s so much more to Paris than all that…or eating in the Marais and Saint-Germain!

I’ve been to Paris over 50 times. I started going back in 2010, I lived there in 2019, I ran tours there, I have tons of friends there. In short, I love Paris.

And when people tell me they hate Paris, it’s usually because they end up in all the touristy areas doing touristy things.

So here is my guide to lesser-known activities, cool restaurants and bars, and my favorite places to stay. You will not find a lot of tourists in any of these spots….even during the summer. (Two exceptions are Bouillon Pigalle and Septime La Cave. Plenty of tourists go there but they are totally live up to the hype and why I included them!)
