My tips for hosting and a final goodbye to summer

I enjoy hosting and getting friends together. Having spent many years organising parties for luxury fashion brands including Versace, Tom Ford and Ralph Lauren, I’ve learnt a lot about what makes a memorable evening. I still get a buzz from planning an event.

Here are some easy ideas to execute:

💡 LIGHTING - start with mood lighting. Low level and warm. Don’t forget the candles. I found these rechargeable party lights (last clip) that completely transformed the place into party mode.

🥘 🍸 FOOD and DRINKS - I usually go for 10 canapés and two bowl foods per person. More than you need but people always get hungry if you’re planning a late night.

🎵MUSIC - plan it to the max. Start with music that isn’t overpowering so people can chat and hear each other. Change the beat / genre as the night goes on. If you want people to dance, then put that into your playlist. The last thing you want is to be constantly looking for the right music. Sometimes a DJ just makes sense.

Catering with someone on bar duty - if you want it to be stress free then catering is for you. If you love cooking, someone on bar duty takes the pressure off. I’ve had a ton of requests for the details and as always more than happy to share. Just comment below if you need the details for anything, including the lights in the ice buckets.

Classic neutral paint colours that work together. All tried and tested based on the level of natural light, to make each space bright and welcoming in the months ahead.

It can be tempting to paint everything the same colour but it can be a lot more interesting if you change it up. I’ve used three different white paints here because of the natural light.

TIP
Choose colours that complement each other to maximise the flow in your space which ultimately makes if feel bigger.

Tried something new - the tension rods that went viral (not for me btw) at Christmas, in the skylights. I made an arrangement with these colourful faux flowers (link attached) but given how amazing the weather has been, thought I’d give them a second use. What do you think?

Bringing the indoor outdoor vibes in this Victorian period home, while keeping the kitchen modern but letting it flow from one room to the next.

Hope you’ve had a good start to the week.

Guest bedroom reveal

This room has taken a lot longer than planned. Almost two years! I didn’t want to spend a lot on it because it is a secondary room.

There are 2 things that I didn’t compromise on:
The fabric on the headboard is from Villa Nova which is a division of the Romo Group. The headboard sets the tone for the space. villanovafabric
Hotel luxury level bedding and towels from tielleloveluxury They supply a lot of the high end hotels.

Would love to know what you think. Be sure to leave me message below if you get a sec and comment BEDROOM if you would like the links to the purchases.

Happy Sunday. A little transformation in the reception area - still keeping it summer with a nod to autumn. The purple flowers in the garden started sprouting which gave me some inspiration for this new arrangement.

I picked up these very realistic flowers from lavendersofcoventgarden My first port of call for faux flowers.

Something a little different for me - colour!

My TOP 3 TIPS for small outdoor spaces

This space is only 5.5m sq. I’ve packed a lot in without it feeling cluttered

1. PLANTING Keep plants off the floor focusing more on vertical planting. Tall narrow trees for example to add vertical interest.

2. FURNITURE Modular slimline lightweight furniture that can stay outside (see original garden reel). This allows you to change up the configuration whenever you want or even move everything out to convert the space into something else. Powder coated steel is usually a safe bet.

3. LIGHTING - this makes the space feel bigger by creating focal points and a sense of openness. Light the edges to make the perimeter feel bigger. Highlight vertical features to draw the eyes upwards. I’ve got a whole list for all the lights I’ve used. Just let me know if this is something you’d like.

The minute I saw these wall lights I knew they’d be perfect for the guest bedroom BUT there’s no wiring. Chasing into the ceiling and wall was going to be messy (old Victorian plaster) and costly (electrician).

Comment LIGHTS if you’d like the links to the wall lights and the puck lights that last up to 80 hours once charged. The puck lights take a bit of work to get them to sit right but worth it.

The wall lights alone weren’t enough for the headboard wall, so I added panelling. The room is almost done and I look forward to sharing with you. What do you guys think?

Have a lovely evening.

This bespoke rug in THIS size was the missing piece. A mid to warm earthy neutral colour to tie in with the rest of the space.

It has pulled the whole garden together. The material actually feels softer and more comfortable under bare feet than real sisal. It is made from synthetic fibres, making it perfect for outdoors, although it can be used indoors. Even the truffle colour trim which looks and feels like cotton, is synthetic. I’m tempted to get one made for the reception. Honestly blown away by how this turned out.

RUG SIZING
In an ideal world the rug should be wide enough for part of the sofa to sit on it. Instead I’ve used it to frame the sofa. I really wanted the decking to be the main focus, as it ties in with the flooring inside. The rug was needed to anchor the space and introduce texture.

The sisal I’ve chosen is STUDLAND from fibreflooring

Finally got around to sharing the paint colours I’ve used downstairs so that the rooms all flow from one to the other. I was keen to make the space light and airy.

I’ve also included the finishes as that’s always a tricky one to decide on. I usually go for matt where practical.

Hope this list is helpful

This hobby happened by accident. I saw some XL branches but they were £££ so I decided to attempt my own. I’ve had so much support from you guys, that I decided to create one piece and then another piece. As the seasons go by, I create new pieces for my home and will continue to share with you.

I have no formal training and haven’t watched any videos to learn how to do this properly. I’m winging it which means you can too.

I get a lot of the faux flowers from lavendersofcoventgarden (trade secret)! and forage branches for the faux flowers.

Thank you for always being so kind and encouraging.

I’ve got some new ideas for Autumn and Winter.

Lighting can transform a garden. This being the main view all year long needed it especially in the darker months.
The lighting system is set on two modes - dinner or party.

I’ve used uplights, spotlights, wall lights, led strips and pole mounted spotlights.

The dimness / brightness in each section is adjustable via an app or the remote switch which mounts on the wall. It is wireless. Requires no chasing into the wall and probably the easiest retro fit I’ve done to date.

If you would like info on the system I used and are following this account, comment

My NEW top 3 tips for creating a continuous flow in your home 🏡

The UK weather can often make homes feel dark. I was on a mission to open it up and make the whole house feel like one big space, while creating that ‘warmth’ regardless of the time of day. I don’t follow trends but instead keep things classic, modern and simple. It is a neutral home with added colour through art.

FLOORING
I’ve used the same crucialtrading textured carpet throughout the top two floors and along the hallways. This draws the eyes straight through and mirrors the concept with the continuous wood flooring downstairs. The bathrooms are all tiled and they blend with the carpet.

FABRICS / UPHOLSTERY
It helps that I’ve chosen all my fabrics from romo_fabrics
I’ve used the same Romo fabric on the garden furniture and on cushions for the bed. The furniture set up in the bay window mirrors the set up in the living room and the garden.
Introduce textures through rugs, throws and wallpaper. Try not to go overboard with matching everything but instead choose fabrics that tie in with each other from the colour palette. The closet doors have a textured fabric that ties in with the furniture in the bedroom.

WALL COLOUR
I’ve used the same bespoke colour throughout the hallway but will soon change that to the ‘perfect white’ I used in the kitchen. All of the colours in all of the rooms are again from a similar palette and work well together. There is a common thread throughout the whole house to bring that element of cohesiveness. I’ve chosen black accents. Black binding on the stair runner, black bannister, the furniture in the office is a very dark colour and I’ve continued this with accent pieces and taken this straight through to the garden - black fire pit and black bifolds.

This is more my vibe, especially for a cloakroom. The perfect BLACK paint. I was too obsessed with the flow downstairs and never really felt the lighter colour worked. I gave it 7 months and didn’t convince myself.

Now everything pops. If you’d like the name of the paint just comment BLACK PAINT

It’s a warm charcoal with a brown undertone that has a dark navy tone to it in certain lights.

My top 3 tips for giving your home 🏡 kerb appeal. The NEW light is in situ and there’s a question for you below.

GARDEN
Create a garden with an evergreen hedge. This also gives you privacy.
I’ve gone one step further and planted a ‘hedge’ on the partition wall to draw the eyes straight to the door

FRONT DOOR
Make it welcoming. Choose a colour that reflects the inside of your home. Something that gives a taste for what’s behind the doors. I love this colour so much I’m now thinking about painting all the doors in the house in the same colour

LIGHTING
One thing I wanted was a bright entrance, especially when the clocks go back. The previous light was rusting and had lost its shine. I had been looking for years for a new one. This bronze lantern with bevelled glass against the door colour is exactly what was needed. I’ve also put lighting in the hedge which provides a lovely view from inside the living room.
One trick I missed is to light the last first step by the gate.

A question for you 🙏🏽. I’ve placed the lantern at an angle as opposed to straight on because I love the way the light casts a diamond pattern against the door. I was also keen to make it look less traditional. What do you think? I’m still in two minds.

ad I’m always in a rush to get to the gym in the morning, but this new kitchenaid_uk Fully Automatic Espresso Machine KF8 allows me to personalise my shot (even down to the temperature) and save to my favourites. All it takes is one push of a button and my morning double espresso is ready in no time.

I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to get a proper coffee machine, maybe it’s the noise it usually makes - this is Quiet Mark certified and is one of the quietest or maybe it’s because they don’t usually look as good as this. It fits in perfectly with the decor.

What’s your favourite coffee? I’m looking forward to being able to serve over 40 recipes with this machine, to friends. It’s just so nice to be able to offer a selection of personalised choices - there’s even a plant based made if you prefer a dairy free option.

My NEW top 3 tips for creating a continuous flow in your home 🏡

This month marks 14 years in this home. It was never the plan. I had no plan, but with every little change, I fall more in love with it. I don’t follow trends but instead keep things classic, modern and simple. It is a neutral home with added colour through art.

FLOORING
I’ve used the same bespoke oak floor throughout downstairs, in a unique colour created by the team woodcraft_flooring and me.
This tone of floor continues outside where it changes to composite decking in a similar shade by millboard_live_life_outside It makes the space feel like one continuous space.

FABRICS / UPHOLSTERY
It helps that I’ve chosen all my fabrics from romo_fabrics
Try not to go overboard with matching everything but instead choose fabrics that tie in with each other from the colour palette. Introduce textures too. I’ve used piping on the outdoor furniture but not on the dining chairs. Instead I’ve just added two piped cushions. I have also only added piping to two chairs in the living room, tying it all together.
The furniture set up in the living room mirrors the set up in the garden.
Do the same for your stone surfaces. Choose stones from a similar palette. It adds interest.

WALL COLOUR
There are 4 different wall colours downstairs but they all blend into each other. There’s a subtle change as you move from room to room. Four colours because the natural light and lighting are different in each room. I wanted the space to feel consistently warm and welcoming. You can section your areas using rugs but try to stay within the colour palette.
By rendering the garden wall to the same height I’ve managed to bring the inside outside.

I’ll always remember the builder who said ‘Not much you can do with that space mate’

Setting this space up for alfresco dining has got to be my favourite kind of entertaining.
I chose lightweight metal furniture to be able to move the sofa set and replace it with the dining table.

I initially had a dining table out there and realised it just sat there more than it was used. A flexible seating set up is something I always recommend for small spaces.

Hope you are enjoying this amazing weather.

A bit of a change up to welcome summer - hydrangeas.
Definitely my favourite season. This arrangement is easy to make. I weave the stems into each other to make a basket like pattern. That way they support each other and give structure to the arrangement.

I normally use two vases and fill the outer one with water so the flowers look more realistic, but changed my mind halfway through because it’s tricky to empty the water.

MY FIVE HALLWAY MUST HAVES THAT MADE THIS SPACE MORE IMPACTFUL AND WELCOMING

1 Panelling draws the eyes through the space. It adds interest and texture
2 Mini up lights for the stairs. The light is cast along the wall which draws the eyes upwards and makes the space feel bigger.
3 A stream lined radiator cover w a glove warming drawer. If UFH was an option, I’d have gone with that. Occupy as little floor space as possible.
4 Stair runner to elevate the space and draw the eyes upwards. This natural colour ties in with the floor which makes it all look like one big space.
5 Bespoke engineered flooring with planks running vertically to draw the eyes in. I’ve used this throughout downstairs to create a flow.

These are MY TOP 3 tips for lighting your garden and extending your evenings outside.
Let me know if you’d like more info on which lights I’ve used throughout just type OUTDOOR LIGHTING and I’ll happily send the list over.

1. LAYERED LIGHTING

UPLIGHTING - adjustable spikes at the base of the plants.
This draws the eyes upwards and great for highlighting the plants. This also creates depth to make the space look bigger.

DOWNLIGHTING - trimless spotlights in the overhang that can be angled to cast light on different areas of the decking

LED led strips hidden in the shelves above the BBQ area to act as task lighting and provide a warm glow

WALL LIGHTS - to highlight the BBQ area. They add interest to the wall and provide functional illumination for the counter top and highlights the waterfall edge.

2 CHOOSE OUTDOOR - sounds obvious but make sure they are weather resistant and ideally low voltage LED which are energy efficient. I’ve also gone for 3000k which is a very warm glow.

3 NATURAL LIGHTING - the power of a fire pit. It creates the most romantic glow. Add some battery operated candles to further enhance the effect.

My top 5 TIPS for a small bathroom

This is the guest bathroom and it is only 2.53 x 2.51m. It feels and looks a lot bigger thanks to a few design decisions. It also doubles as a steam room.

1 XL TILES
Use XL tiles for less grout lines. I’ve used 120cm x 120 cm
These are mitred to create the illusion of blocks of marble and avoid tile trims, which can break the flow

2 MINIMALIST TRANSPARENT GLASS
Chase into the floor to encourage the flow from inside the shower to outside. Keep it transparent to keep the flow.

3 FLOAT - wall mount everything
Taps and dispenser bottles - free up counter space
Vanity and bench
Toilet

4 LARGE MIRRORS
Always expands the room visually and bounces light

5 PAINT COLOURS
Lighter colours - reflect light, enhance natural light and create a sense of airiness

Extra tip
UNDER FLOOR HEATING
No radiator means more wall space and more visual space.
Niches create depth and give an opportunity to store / display things.
I’ve created a wetroom to maintain the flow.
