A casino in Coney Island would change the neighborhood forever.

Developers want to replace the heart of Coney Island with a massive casino and hotel that would cast shadows over the amusement area. Almost half the rides would be removed and the small businesses put at risk.

Even the future of Coney Island USA and the Mermaid Parade, one of New York’s most iconic events, could be on the line.

Tomorrow is the first Community Advisory Committee meeting. This is your chance to show up and speak out.

Dolly’s Ices has been a Brooklyn summer staple for 33 years. They’ve had a few spots over the decades, but today you’ll find them tucked between a gas station and a Dunkin’ in Mill Basin. It’s as quintessential family-owned as it gets. Dolly runs the mornings, her son Nicky holds it down in the evenings.

They crank out over 100 flavors from their own factory, open 6 months a year, 7 days a week. Water ices, cream ices, ice cream, and much more. Classics like spumoni and lemon ice, or curveballs like peanut butter & jelly and pancake & syrup. All bangers.

Their wall of fame consists of Mike Tyson and Pop Smoke to Tony Sirico and Steve Schirippa.

Check them out at 2317 Ralph Ave, Brooklyn, NY. 2025-08-18 23:14:48 Dolly’s Ices ha.. 27,822 +26% 324 -24%

The Garment District has been shaping NYC’s identity for over a century. Hidden in plain sight in Midtown, it’s the force behind NYFW, Broadway, your favorite brands, student projects, and DIY’ers alike. Inside unassuming buildings are artisans, suppliers, and factories keeping the city’s creative economy and infrastructure alive.
A new rezoning plan would likely displace the majority of 779 small businesses and thousands of workers like: customfabricflowers, where Adam, Alex, and Miriam still hand-make fabric flowers using century-old molds from the 1910s when this family business was founded. steinlaufandstoller, a sewing supply and notions shop around since 1947, with the mayor of the Garment District, Nancy, putting in snaps by the window. wingweftgloves, one of the last glove makers in the country, where Katie Sue and Bebe carry on a delicate and rare craft. nyembroiderystudio, founded by Michelle, whose embroidery and fabric manipulation techniques grew her business from a few machines to two NYC factories with hundreds of employees. superrushtrims, where Sulé runs his trim and finishings shop from a modest studio filled with decades old machinery that’s travelled with him from the cramped back room he started in a few blocks away.

These businesses are just a portion of a unique ecosystem built specifically for garment production—loft buildings with freight elevators, reinforced flooring for three-ton machines, wide stairwells, and shared infrastructure that can’t just be replicated elsewhere, and doesn’t exist anywhere else in the city.

Their mission isn’t about stopping progress. It’s about making sure progress doesn’t bulldoze a historic neighborhood in the process. The New York Fashion Workforce Development Coalition has proposed 7 simple recommendations that would protect this community while allowing Midtown South to evolve.

All testimonials appealing to local government to protect the garment district must be submitted by August 6th. You can learn about ways to help by following wingweftgloves.

I’ve made watching the Tokyo Rockabillies my first stop in Japan ever since stumbling on them almost a decade ago when I came for the first time. “Rockabilly” is a subculture in Japan centered around a passionate community of individuals who embrace the retro style and spirit of music and fashion inspired by the American rock and roll scene of the 1950s. These men and women gather in Yoyogi Park every Sunday (without fail) showcasing their pompadours, leather jackets, and flamboyant outfits while dancing energetically to classic rockabilly songs. This subculture has been active for over 40 years and many of the original members still perform every weekend. 2025-07-26 01:28:50 I’ve made watching .. 29,994 +36% 458 +8%
I spent the day at Mount Sinai’s Abilities Research Center with my friend Garrison Redd and Prentice Cox. I did a profile on Garrison a month ago, but for those who didn’t see it, he’s been in a wheelchair for 20 years after being shot. Prentice has been in one for 23 years after a motorcycle accident. Both of them are super active and very much “outside,” but according to them, that’s not the norm. Most people with spinal cord injuries end up stuck at home, thinking that’s it.

But these two are living proof there’s more. Their mission is to show other quadriplegics that life isn’t over and that there’s always a reason to keep going. They both believe they’ll walk again one day, without any devices. At ARC, they’re making real progress using tech like exoskeletons and electrical stimulation. But it takes serious commitment, and the biggest hurdle isn’t the injury, it’s getting insurance companies to see the value in recovery.

Check out garrisonredd and pr3ntice to learn how to get involved with their work. 2025-07-23 20:57:31 .. 0 -100% 130 -69%
