- You have not got a damaged metabolism, you've just ROYALLY pissed it off by spending the last 10 years dieting ineffectively Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes inside your body that allow life and normal functioning - maintaining normal function is called homeostasis If your metabolism was broken, you would die ...yours may be a little/ a lot sluggish... Here is why: Think of metabolism as the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. energy = calories You have a certain amount of calories you NEED in order to maintain homeostasis. Your body strives 4 homeostasis irrespective of what you want your butt to look like. If your metabolism needs you to consume 2000kcal but you consistently feed it 1500kcal, you will lose weight. However...if your metabolism didn't adapt to its new kcal intake, you would keep loosing weight until you literally died. It slowed down to meet you at 1500kcal... now you are "maintaining homeostasis" at 1500kcal.... its ADAPTED to keep you alive. You can no longer loose weight eating 1500kcal. This doesn't mean you shouldn't ever spend time in an energy (calorie) deficit, it just means that you need to factor in METABOLIC ADAPTATION into your fat loss/ weight loss journey Things that slow your metabolism are ❌excessive and exhaustive exercise ❌chronic dieting and calorie restriction ❌stress and lack of sleep Things that speed up your metabolism are ✅eating enough food (calories and nutrients) ✅building muscle tissue through resistance training ✅prioritising sleep and stress management If it can slow itself down to meet you at a lower energy requirement, you better believe it can speed up to meet you at a higher energy requirement. This is something i specifically help my client work on during their weight loss journeys.
