Did you study photography? Is a question I am often asked. . . . I first picked up a film camera in college when I took a Foundation Art course. It was only one term, so I didn’t get to learn it well. Photography as a career never really crossed my mind. I went off to Uni to study Graphic design but left after my first year. I realised I based all my projects around photography and strong images. I’m not the most academic, so the thought of starting a photography degree and writing a thousand words about why I love an image so much was not for me. Instead, I decided to get an apprenticeship with a local studio. During my time there, I actually learnt more about business then photography. I went on to open my own studio and nearly go bankrupt (that’s a story for another post). As my style changed I loved shooting outside more but I still didn’t really know what I was doing. Trying to get the right exposure was so frustrating, I was so confused by getting the aperture, shutter speed and ISO all right at the same time, I just didn’t get it. After hours of trial and error, shooting as much as possible it just clicked one day. If I could rewind and start again I would definitely of had a mentor who could have probably broken it down in a day for me and help it all make sense quicker. . . . We all have different learning styles and for me I know it wasn’t with my head in books, it’s someone talking me through things step by step, it’s watching YouTube videos and listening to audiobooks.
