![Women who’ve lost their moms are some of the strongest people I know. Truthfully, I didn’t even want to get out of bed today, the sadness was too heavy.
A few weeks ago in therapy, I realized I had “hero syndrome.” As a little girl, I wanted my mom to save me… so I grew up trying to save everyone else. Back then, I carried so much resentment because I wanted my mom to be my hero. Not realizing she couldn’t save me because she was drowning. Now as an adult, I can’t help but wonder, who was there to save her?
There are so many questions I’ll never get to ask. So much I wish I understood about her pain, her choices, her journey. Sometimes we forget our parents were doing the best they could with what they had.

![LISTEN TO THIS BEFORE YOU QUIT!! There were so many times I wanted to give up. My senior year of high school was one of the darkest seasons of my life when my sister committed suicide, my world shattered. I carried so much pain, and truthfully, I didn’t think I was strong enough to keep going.
But in that darkness, my dad became my hero. Not the kind of hero who wears a cape, but the kind who saves you silently. He held me up when I was breaking, reminded me I had purpose when I couldn’t see it, and gave me something to fight for. It was seeing how he kept going after finding her. 🥲
Now, years later, I stood in my old high school watching them unveil a mural of him on the wall. Full circle. The same halls where I once felt broken now celebrate the man who helped me survive.
And I realize everything I’ve built today, every business, every stage, every community I’ve created it all started with the decision not to give up back then.

![WOW MY DAD HAS A MURAL IN MY OLD HIGH SCHOOL!!! 😱 High school me would have NEVER believed this moment. Back then, I used to shrink at the thought of people knowing my dad was an activist. I wanted him to have a “cool job” like a lawyer or doctor, not realizing that what he was building was far greater.
Fast forward to today- standing in the same halls I once walked, looking up at a mural of the man I used to hide from but now admire more than anyone. The same dad who fought for his community, who stood up when it wasn’t popular, who gave me the courage to dream bigger.
What once embarrassed me is now the reason I’m the proudest daughter alive. This is legacy. This is full circle. This is my dad. ART MCKOY — history in the making..
