Location details⬇️ 1️⃣♨️ Sunayu beach at Lake Kussharo Dig your own onsen here! The water is actually hot, heated by a nearby volcano Mount Io. You can also enjoy free foot baths here. In winter, wild swans come here to enjoy the onsen🦢 visit_teshikaga 2️⃣🐄 Watanabe Experience Farm in Teshikaga This family-run dairy farm offers many fun experiences, like feeding cows, milking, milk-tasting and also a tractor ride🌾 watanabetaikenbokujyo 3️⃣🫐 Mima Farm in Shari Try blueberry picking from mid-July to late August. They grow different varieties so you can taste different ones and find your favorite😋 mima_nouen 4️⃣🌊 Lake Abashiri You can catch clams here from mid-July to mid-August. You need to purchase a designated bag (1,000 JPY) at the lakeside campsite, and stuff it as much as you can! 5️⃣❄️ Drift Ice Museum in Abashiri Here you can enter a -15C/5F temperature room and touch real drift ice that traveled the ocean from Siberia🥶 You can also see some rare creatures that live under drift ice, like sea angels (Clione). abashiri_city_tourism_section 👀All of these are in Eastern Hokkaido! My confession… I didn’t like living in Hokkaido growing up. I was the typical teenager girl dreaming of big cities🙈 But the funny thing is, after living abroad for years, I started to miss the things I used to hate about my hometown. A boring countryside that’s peaceful and calm, with no crowds. Empty nature that actually has everything — mountains, lakes, the ocean, farms and hot springs. Simple food that’s far from fine dining, because the ingredients are so fresh that they don’t need fancy cooking to taste amazing. Now I feel so lucky that I was able to see my hometown from the outside, realize how special it is, and share it with you. Here’s what you need to do⬇️ No one wants to keep hopping around overcrowded places on their holidays. So here’s the exact 3 things you need to do, if you want to go off the beaten path in Japan (from someone who helped 300+ travelers explore rural Japan.) 1️⃣ Give up on “hidden gems” in big cities I see too many posts about “10 hidden gems in Tokyo” or “5 unknown temples in Kyoto” … but are they, really? (often posted by another tourist) You’ll still be surrounded by crowds while taking trains and walking on the streets. Instead, go all in for lesser-known destinations. 2️⃣ Accept that lesser-known destinations are difficult to get to I also see many people complaining “Hokkaido is too far!” But sorry, if you only stick to convenient places, you’ll stay stuck in the crowds. Yes, it might take an extra train ride or even a flight. But that’s the trade-off for going off the beaten paths. 3️⃣ Avoid booking large-size affordable hotels Because that’s where many group tours stay. Check-in feels hectic, buffet meals are overwhelming. Instead, choose small hotels, family-run inns, hostels, or high-end stays. Most of Hokkaido is known for Jingisukan (grilled lamb), but in my hometown Kitami, we proudly love beef and pork yakiniku✨ 🤔Here’s why. Back in the early 1900s, there was a meat processing plant in the town, and thanks to that, locals had easy access to fresh cuts of beef and pork. That’s how the city’s love for yakiniku started!
