Guys, I’m sorry to break it to you but it’s not really green 😬🤭 Honestly, if I had a penny for everyone who’s asked me what shade of green the island is (and even the wall cabinets too in some instances), I’d be living life on a different kind of island somewhere right now 🏝️. In truth, it’s actually a grey, albeit one with some seriously colourful undertones. Downpipe is billed by farrowandball as ‘a dark lead grey’ with blue undertones which maybe plays into the whole green narrative. One thing’s for sure, the amount of light the kitchen gets (or doesn’t get) depending on day to day weather, turns Downpipe in to an absolute chameleon… it can honestly read grey, blue or indeed green on any given day. Usually the darker it is, the greener it looks. For me that’s the beauty of Farrow & Ball pigments vs colour matching, they all have such great reaction to changing light that just can’t be matched. Morning lovelies & happy sunny Saturday ☀️🙌🏼 If yours is anything like my weekend, you’re already knee deep in Barbie paraphernalia & the kitchen island is awash with Lego bricks & Akedo warriors (IYKYK 😉). ‘Not possible’ I hear you cry! ‘Your house is always so put together’. Well huns, I assure you it isn’t. I’m just a girl styling it out as best she can by day & breathing a sigh of relief when order resumes at the end of the day. So with that in mind, here are some tips I’ve picked up during the reno process to create a family home that looks good but lives even better… - Smart storage: If there’s one thing that kills style & function it’s clutter. We went for built ins in the TV room to hideaway ALL the toys at the end of the day 📚🧸 - Choose durable (but beautiful) materials: Spills, stains, and sticky fingers happen. FACT. Try performance fabrics on sofas like we did with easy care velvet. Quartz worktops, low pile rugs & wipeable wall paints for easy cleaning are a must 🧽🫟 - Zone your spaces: Family homes serve so many functions - playing, relaxing, working. Using rugs, lighting & furniture in open plan spaces helped us to create flow & designated areas for playing, reading & homework 🎲💤✏️ - Flexible layouts: Family needs change from day to day as well as when the kids grow, so open spaces that allow for dancing & forts but have the ability to be made more intimate when needed are ideal. We used a sliding glass room divider to separate off the tv room from the other living areas & create more of a den feel in the evening. An open bookcase would also be a great way to achieve this without completely cutting off spaces 👌🏼 Is there anything else you’d add to the list? Not just for the aesthetics 🌿 Yup, it smells incredible. Yup, it creates a beautiful backdrop for the outdoor living space but one of the main reasons we used an evergreen Jasmine screen was to hide away the garden shed & keep the focus firmly on the decked area. Having the shed out on view could have really dominated what I’d say is our small/medium garden, at around 8m it’s not the deepest, so these pre grown screens were an ideal solution. We built a section at the back of the deck to sink the root troughs into for a seamless finish & 5yrs on they’re still one of my fave garden decisions 💚.
