On This Day | World Vada Pav Day.

In the 1960s, Dadar became the birthplace of Mumbai’s most iconic snack. Ashok Vaidya (and some say Sudhakar Mhatre) served the first vada pav to mill workers. This is the photo of first stall.

Then & Now | J.J. Hospital, Byculla, Mumbai.

The first photo (from 1870) was part of my last postcard set, capturing the Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy Hospital in its early days.
The second one is from my recent visit, the same Gothic revival structure, still standing after more than 150 years.

2002: A small kid, standing near what was then Villa Vienna. Shah Rukh Khan had just purchased this bungalow in 2001. A few years later, in 2005, it was renamed to the iconic Mannat.

Back then, there wasn’t a sea of fans crowding outside like today. It was just another elegant Bandra bungalow, slowly becoming history in the making.

SRK bought it for ₹13 crore… and as of 2025, its value is estimated more than ₹200 crore. From Villa Vienna to Mannat — a journey that mirrors the King Khan story itself.

1905: Parsis celebrating a festival day at the Back Bay Beach. Pic 2 shows people crowded around the beach at low tide, celebrating the Parsi New Year presumably. At high tide, the water rises to the stone embankment (seen at the back). Beyond that is Churchgate station (picture 1) and row of public buildings like the Secretariat, Rajabai Clock Tower (picture 2).

At the time, the Back Bay waters was closer to the public building but after reclamation, the distance widened. The Marine Drive, Art Deco buildings, Chowpatty, etc were formed after the Back Bay Reclamation Project, in the 1920s-30s.
