Pricing your services can be extremely difficult.

You have to take into account:
• how much you should charge
• what rates the market is accepting
• the budget the brand is working with 

All that leads imposter syndrome (shout out to PPIS) and then to your three biggest mistakes:

Mistake 1: Not charging enough. 

This one is simple enough. You either have absolutely no idea what to charge or you were told a rate by someone who probably doesn’t know how to price your offerings. 

Mistake 2: Charging more but cancelling it out with more deliverables. 

Maybe you do know how much to charge, but the number feels to high and makes you uncomfortable so you start throwing in “free stuff.”

Mistake 3: Shooting way over to overcompensate.

This happens when you feel really good about your content, and you don’t want to undervalue yourself, so you throw out a number that is high and feels scary. Normally that is a smart thing to do, but only if you can back it up. If you can’t, you look
naive and unprofessional.

Procrastination. Perfectionism. Imposter Syndrome. 

Or what I’m calling PPIS. 

It’s without a doubt the biggest problem for influencers and creators.

It’s why you’re super talented but don’t have nearly as much success as you should. 

Whether success is a larger audience, industry recognition, more brand deals, increased revenue, or just more free time, it’s the reason you feel like the more you put in, the less you’re getting back, and the more burnt out you’re becoming.

Regardless of how long you’ve been in this industry it can still creep up on you.

It’s not because they’re broke. Although… 🤣 

A creator was complaining that the PR team from huge brand (that makes billions) reached out to them and there was no budget and the audacity... blah blah blah.

Now my purse string holders already know what I’m going to say, but I’ll enlighten the creators / influencers.

1. How much a brand makes has no bearing on the influencer budget. That’s like saying since you make over $50k a year you should have at least ONE Chanel bag because they’re only $6k. See how silly that sounds?

2. There is a difference between EARNED and PAID media. 

Earned media is just that. Media that has to be earned. That’s what PR companies do. They send press releases and products on behalf of their client because if the product is any good people will be COMPELLED to write/post about it. Aka it was earned. But maybe the creator/outlet will write about it, maybe they won’t. 

They should not expect deliverables or usage even though they may politely ask for them. If they do, that’s paid media.

Paid media is guaranteed placement, because at the end of the day friends, ya’ll make ads. You get a creative brief and someone pays you to make an ad for their company. You can call it whatever you want, collab / partnership / creative content direction, but there’s a reason the disclosure is hashtag ad.

This is the only time you should be thinking about budgets. Yes some people with budgets will try and see what they get for free, but that’s why you know how to negotiate. 

3. So complaining that a PR firm doesn’t have any budget ruins all chances they will gift you in the future (and they definitely won’t pay you) because you don’t know anything about business.

I opened up Threads, which seems to be the official platform for creators saying things that are untrue, and saw this gem.

Last week I saw a Linkedin post from an influencer director at a top brand complaining that influencers are not putting their emails in their bios.

So many other brands jumped on to also complain, and yet influencers and agents/managers were explaining why they chose to leave it out.

YOU GUYS.

There is no contact button on desktop.

We are not going to look for your email in your link in bio.

Platforms let us exclude people who do not have emails in their bios and we will do it!

WHYYYYYYY are we not putting it in there?

Do you not like money?

Also... Gmails can be impersonated. The NY Times did a whole article on influencer fraud. Don't let that happen to you.

Creators complaining about inbox crickets is at an all time high. 🦗

It's literally my entire feed on threads.

But I see those same creators (and their agents/managers) complaining that it's not their job to take direction from a brand, guarantee views, or move product. 🧐

AKA they forgot it's no longer 2018 and the rules have changed.

Still waiting that holiday campaign payment? 👀🫠

Late payments may be the worst thing about this industry. 

Creators try things like asking for 50% upfront (which is great but doesn’t mean you’ll be paid on time) and adding fees for late payments (which is cool until you’re one day away from being paid and that fee kicks in and now you have to submit a new invoice. 😩)

Companies like joinwilla and lumanu have also tried tackling the issue with variations of paying creators upfront. 

And let’s not forget the horror stories that keep popping up of agencies and platforms going belly up and leaving hundreds and sometimes thousands of creators unpaid. 

But… There is an email you can send that will get you paid immediately 99.9% of the time. 

I know because I used to get it and without fail the influencer would get receive their funds within 24 hours. 

At least 25 creators have told me this email FINALLY got them paid after getting the run around and being ghosted for weeks. 

And while I’m sad they had to use it, I’m thrilled it works!

Sometimes a trip to your dream hotel in exchange for some content is a dream come true. 

Does that make it harder for established influencers to sell the same services other people are willing to provide for free? Yes. But top-tier influencers do top-tier shit and worrying about smaller creators isn't on that list.

If it grinds your gears because you’re wondering how you’re supposed to make money if you can’t charge the hotel, it’s time to diversify your revenue streams. 

Use these trips to shoot content that will make you affiliate revenue, write about a new city using the right SEO keywords that will make you ad revenue, and just have a good time so you don’t end up burned TF out.
