- Look. I know it's hard to know who to trust but... this isn't it. My least favorite statement is "doing things for free hurts the entire industry." Sigh. First of all, nothing hurts the industry more than overcharging because some influencer who has super high prices and never gets booked told you to do that. Ya'll are not in the group chats with people who control the money and let me tell you... brands are pissed off because creators are asking for $30K and "settling" for $3k. BTW your agent is trash for doing that. Accepting a free trip or product (with fair deliverables, usage, and exclusivity) is perfectly fine if it fits into your overall strategy. Want to use that free product in your affiliate content and make $10k in commission instead of getting paid $5K with heavy usage and exclusivity? Go ahead. Want to take that free trip in exchange for two reels, 5 story sets, and 10 photos, because it is a DREAM trip and you would have to save for a year to afford it? Do it. Want to go to attend that event for free because the celeb hosting is your fave and the engagement and IRL contact might get you out of a slump? Ask for an Uber credit, but go. You did not get into this industry to listen to random ass rules from people who are undercharging, have no business sense, and won't ever reach their full potential. And if you keep listening to them you might end up brand rich but business poor. There are soooo many ways to make money. And I want you to get rich AF using all of them. But please remember that not all compensation is monetary. You don't have to buy products/services from me (but if you want to, comment GOAT for the links / also in my bio) but PLEASE stop listening to people who will send your business back to when we needed 10K to get the swipe up. Happy Sunday.
- Are we really this far behind as an industry? I opened up Threads, which seems to be the official platform for creators saying things that are untrue, and saw this gem. A creator was complaining that the PR team from huge brand (that makes billions) reached out to them and there was no budget and the audacity... blah blah blah. Now my purse string holders already know what I'm going to say, but I'll enlighten the creators / influencers. 1. How much a brand makes has no bearing on the influencer budget. That's like saying since you make over $50k a year you should have at least ONE Chanel bag because they're only $6k. See how silly that sounds? 2. There is a difference between EARNED and PAID media. Earned media is just that. Media that has to be earned. That's what PR companies do. They send press releases and products on behalf of their client because if the product is any good people will be COMPELLED to write/post about it. Aka it was earned. But maybe the creator/outlet will write about it, maybe they won't. They should not expect deliverables or usage even though they may politely ask for them. If they do, that's paid media. Paid media is guaranteed placement, because at the end of the day friends, ya'll make ads. You get a creative brief and someone pays you to make an ad for their company. You can call it whatever you want, collab / partnership / creative content direction, but there's a reason the disclosure is hashtag ad. This is the only time you should be thinking about budgets. Yes some people with budgets will try and see what they get for free, but that's why you know how to negotiate. 3. So complaining that a PR firm doesn't have any budget ruins all chances they will gift you in the future (and they definitely won't pay you) because you don't know anything about business. What the influencer SHOULD have said was... Comment BUDGET and I'll send the response to you. 😘
- Allow me to reintroduce myself. I’m Brittany Hennessy, and I’ve been building in this industry since before “creator economy” was even a phrase. In 2018, I wrote INFLUENCER: the blueprint for turning content into career. 100,000 copies and 6 translations later, I’m still showing creators how to scale strategically. Today, I’m a VP at Sprout Social, and this week, I stood on stage as our CEO rang the closing bell at Nasdaq to celebrate our 15-year anniversary. A full-circle moment, considering I beta tested Tagger (acquired by Sprout!) at my very first influencer marketing job. But the work doesn’t stop there. I also help creators navigate this wild economy through: ✨ Suite Intelligence – my Substack for creators who think like strategists ✨ The Suite Society – a private community for intentional scale ✨ Suite Intensives – coaching for top-tier creators writing their legacy in real time This industry moves fast and the path to success can feel like a tunnel in the dark. But I’ve got the torch, and I know the way. Let’s go. 🚀✨
