Reflecting upon my month of slowness - a personal share incoming.

Summer is a time of intense yang energy. It can be really easy to get caught up in saying yes to everything and expending a loooot more energy than you usually would.

July was a particularly busy month for me - holidays, teacher trainings, concerts etc, all whilst maintaining a full teaching schedule and juggling social media clients. after a non stop year, this genuinely led me to complete exhaustion.

At the end of last month, every instructors worst nightmare happened: my alarm didn’t go off and I woke up at 7:07 for a class starting at 7:15🫠 this has never ever happened to me because I have a super regulated sleep cycle, and the intense feelings of stress/frustration/embarrassment I felt because of this f*ck up were the final straw for me. My nervous system was screaming at me to listen to the signs.

I changed things straight away. I
- cut classes that weren’t serving me. I know some full time teachers don’t have the ability to do this, but for me, teaching more than 3 classes in a day whilst having another business to run is not physically possible
- Stopped drinking alcohol. Not forever, but I actively chose to take a break from drinking any alcohol this month. It’s easy to just have ‘one drink’ very often in summer and they add up fassttttt and alcohol really gives me the dreaded hangxiety
- made sure I had no plans (except teaching) for 4 weekends in a row!!!
- Have said ‘no’ more times than I can count. To social events, holidays, parties etc
- attended more sound healing and slow yoga in a month than I have in my life! The effect I have felt this have on my nervous system has been insane.

After nearly a month, I finally feel like I’m coming out the other end of this ‘burnout’. It’s been tough and exhausting and really upsetting at times because I’ve found myself asking the question ‘will I ever feel like I have 100% energy again?’. Time. Time and rest are medicine, and sometimes societal expectations make you feel like you don’t have that.

Anyway, I’ve seen a lot of people sharing they’re in a similar boat. It’s always the right time to slow down when the body signals it x 2025-08-26 01:18:56 .. 195 +110% 19 +108%
Thinking that more permanent studio classes = better teacher.

I used to get so jealous when I saw other teachers in london post their schedules and they had a lot of permanent studio classes. I’d think ‘wow they’ve made it’ and ‘I hope that’s me one day’. And it did become me one day, and I was happy for a little while.

But I’ve come to learn that having boundaries as a yoga teacher is one of the most important things that you can do. I gave up my entire weekends to begin with. Every morning and evening and didn’t give myself a consistent day off. This was literally a one way street to not only burnout and resentment, but almost complete loss of my practice too. Doing my advanced teaching training at the same time was the icing on the cake and after completing that this year, something really switched.

I realised I cannot keep giving my energy away like this because there is nothing left for me. Let alone my partner or my friends or my family. Teaching yoga is a transfer of energy - the teacher talks, gives adjustments, shares from the heart and the student (hopefully) receives. Sometimes we receive too but in London, quite often, students come and go without saying much and that’s ok, but giving and not receiving takes its toll after a while.

I’ve realised now that more permanent classes doesn’t = better teacher (for me). Less classes means that I can share more passionately. I have more time to plan and make new playlists and actually get excited to share again, plus spend more time crafting thesweetliferetreat which is really my heart project.

This yoga teaching journey is so different for everybody, much as our yoga practice is so personal, and that’s why it’s so special. Don’t compare to people on the internet because what works for them, won’t necessarily work for you. Yoga constantly reminds me that everything in life is a process, and that it’s ok for things to change. To listen and to respond, before it’s too late. We can learn so much from simply slowing down and observing. Always coming from a place of ahimsa, starting with yourself.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this 🤍

yin, slow flow and sound are basically the glue that’s holding me together at the moment

I go through phases with my practice much like everything in life, and right now I’m doing a strong, dynamic practice once or twice a week and the rest are all slooooow and grounding. my nervous system has been in sympathetic overdrive for too long, and these soothing practices are slowly letting the edges soften.

I have been teetering on the edge of burnout for what feels like the longest time, and right now my practice is providing me with the space to be held and supported, and that’s what I need. the handstands and co will be there waiting for me when I need them 🦋

reminder that if you’re feeling tired or burnt out - you don’t need to push through. allow yourself to slow down and consciously rest. it’s essential not only for survival but for sustainability. a lesson I need to listen to more.

a little reminder that going on holiday isn’t a set back. it isn’t a time where things need to be restricted, workout plans need to be kept to etc. holidays can still just be time to lay down, eat good food, spend time with loved ones and RELAX.

social media can fool you into believing that absolutely everybody goes on holiday to eat clean and run along the beach but ffs it’s not essential. go to Italy, eat the pasta, the sheer amount of steps will be enough exercise trust me 🙂‍↕️

but in all seriousness, working hard can lead to burning out and taking time to rest and recover is SO good for your nervous system. I am now so excited to get back onto the mat and teach & practice tomorrow.

a moment on my feed to shoutout a very special space in London somayogawandsworth 🕉️

I started teaching at somayogawandsworth earlier this year and it has very quickly became one of my most sacred spaces to teach at. This studio has been created with so much love, care and devotion, and I’m so grateful to gea.yoga for trusting me to be a part of the teaching team here.

I have been stepping away from teaching in places that I don’t resonate so much with anymore, and am so honoured to be serving and sharing in shalas such as this, which are here to provide space for those to be a part of a community who knows your name, cares about you and serves you for where you’re at.

If you’re south west London based, catch me here on Tuesday’s at 6:30pm for a breath led, dynamic vinyasa (think yogasana, with an elemental influence), and Friday’s 12pm, for a 45 minute vinyasa lunchtime reset. You’ll also catch me on the mat practicing with the other incredible teachers here.

It hasn’t been long but this studio already has a huge piece of my heart.

Thank you to gea.yoga somayogawandsworth desilesphotography for these gorgeous photos.

Thank you to everybody who has already joined me here. Hope to see you on the mat here my loves.

Missing my own practice.

This morning I was teaching at lost_in_yoga and the room was full of pretty much the exact same people who have been coming to me every Tuesday morning for the past two years 🥹 it really got me thinking about how I f*cking miss being able to do that. Some gorgeous human beings come to me 2/3 times per week !!!! What a luxury and reason to be so grateful for me.

Now, I know it’s all well and good to say ‘wake up earlier and practice’ or ‘find time to practice at home’ etc but I really miss being able to go to other teachers peak time classes and just be a student. I can’t remember the last time I went to a class and didn’t have my teacher head on.

I teach 5 days a week, at almost all of the same times my teacher teaches, so I rarely get to make it to his classes anymore, and x2 days I am not teaching I try and make myself sleep in a little because every other day usually my sleep is like shit 😆 I also work another job and have other hobbies, a relationship, friendships to sustain and life to LIVE. It is so hard to juggle everything

Now I am not complaining because I love teaching yoga so damn much, but I really do just miss being a student sometimes. Do any other yoga teachers resonate?

P.S. Can any of the studios close to me start a teachers practice at an off peak time so we can all get our practice on together plzzzzz 🥹🥹🥹

Building self trust and overcoming self doubt.

How did I build the self trust? By showing up. By continuing to learn and not settling after my first training. By putting in the workkkkkk 🥹

Imposter syndrome is really a thing but you just have to overcome it at some point. I undervalued myself a lot and compared myself to other teachers, and used to get really scared when another teacher was in my class, thinking ‘what if I say or do something wrong and they notice’. As much as we are human and make errors sometimes, if you really know your craft, anybody can be in front of you and it doesn’t matter!!

And honestly once you know your stuff and are confident whilst teaching it, your crowd will come. They will stay. They will trust you to take the leap to come to a workshop or a retreat with you. This beautiful natural progression happens.

I really believe a 200 hour training gives you the basis to start teaching, but the further work needs to come from you. Teaching yoga isn’t an easy side hustle - it’s a commitment to continuing to better yourself, be curious and serve this lineage.

The self doubt will always creep in, but if you keep showing up, doing the work and BEING PRESENT with your yogis, the self trust will overpower the self doubt

Would love to hear your thoughts on this x

1. Aparigrahah (non attachment) to personal belongings. We got robbed in Barcelona a few weeks ago at the end of our retreat and a few really special things of mine were stolen. Taking this time to remember that me and the girls are all safe and healthy and material things come and go. Happiness can be found elsewhere.

2. Cycle syncing. Listening to my bodies 4 clear stages and adapting my life around those. Saying no to more when I’m in my luteal phase, sometimes even having classes covered when it’s a real roughie. Equally adapting my movement practice around my cycle too. I fully understand now that I cannot hack a 90 minute yogasana when I’m in a deep luteal, so lean towards slow flow and yin then instead. Equally love a Barry’s bootcamp when I’m follicular 🤪

3. Santosha (contentment). For what seems like the first time in my life i am just so happy where i am right now and it’s beautifully refreshing. I’m not chasing any big goals in my teaching career right now - I love the communities that I’m a part of. I have no physical goals for my body or within my yoga practice. I’m simply just content with where I am. Not stagnant, but simply not rushing towards anything either.

I try to live by the yamas and niyamas as much as I can, but these two are really sticking out to me at the moment 🤍 don’t worry, ahimsa is totally there too (always) 😆

Let me know what you’re practicing currently too x

1. create a new playlist for every class - whewwww! I used to teach 2/3 classes a week when I started and thought people would notice if I used the same playlist 2 weeks in a row. I don’t even notice the music when I practice usually so this was so unnecessary. Don’t get me wrong my playlists are still fire though.

2. demo everything. After my initial 200 hour training, I was very much stuck on my mat. Covid restrictions were still in place and we weren’t allowed to adjust in studio so it took a while for me to build confidence off the mat. I purposely chose to do my advanced teacher training with eastlondonschoolofyoga so I’d learn to confidently teach with my words and adjustments.

3. offer classes with no philosophy. Again after my 200 hour I didn’t have the deepest understanding of philosophy. Now however you won’t go a class without hearing me splurt out sutras or bang on about koshas.

4. teach a new class/sequence every time. I have a weekly theme now, create a sequence and play around with it as the week goes on. No two classes are identical but not everything is brand new either.

5. get offended if people don’t say thank you/bye after class. This used to make me so saddddd but now I understand that people may be introverted, busy or maybe they just didn’t like me 😆 that’s cool too

6. try and teach at every studio ever. I used to think this was the sign of a good yoga teacher! To be everywhere, but that’s just not me. Right now I’m really whittling my schedule down to only teach at places that align with me.

7. be too serious. I used to get soooo freaked out if I messed up and thought people would really judge me for this! Messing up occasionally is normal and makes you human. Now I respond in a human way and laugh about it

8. doubt myself. This is a big one. I had imposter syndrome for the LONGEST time. I wanted to host retreats for so long but didn’t think anybody would want to come, lol 🥹 I really trust myself now and know that what I’m sharing is valuable, because I live what I teach and am on this journey of continuous learning and development. Grateful to those who come along for the ride 🤍

throwback to probably my favourite yoga class I have ever taught 🩵 the element of water can teach us so much, mostly that to be soft is to be strong.

“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong” Lao Tzu
