Would it be good if you could practice yoga this fast and be done in a minute and a half? Asking for a friend.

I’m going to start an online class soon. We won’t be moving that fast, but it will be this kind of stuff. Send me a DM if you’re interested and I’ll send you the details when it’s all set up.

I had this idea for a sun salutation back in October last year. And then I didn’t post on instagram for a looooong time and didn’t end up posting it. It’s also a pretty questionable idea.

Not saying that I’m getting back into posting on instagram, but not saying I’m not.

It’s the same same over here, even though I haven’t posted about it recently. Posting on instagram can become such a full time job, that when you haven’t done it in a while you wonder how you ever managed to do it in the first place. Seriously, some people do this every day. I can barely make myself doomscroll these days.

I thought I’d actually post something from the retreat that littlehaque and I ran last month in Morocco, before my memory of it disappears into the mists of time that is my ever increasing cloud my brain fog.

Obviously this is something I did on my own, rather than something we did on the retreat, but I think you got that. And in terms of content creation it really is the bare minimum - a “quick I better stop listening to this audiobook and film something for instagram instead” kind of moment. I get that a lot, but as you can tell don’t have much follow through. Mostly I carry on listening to the audiobook. Also, please forgive the fact that it’s not all real time. I am slow and didn’t want it to be boring.

We’re thinking of going back to the same place next year - if you send me a message or leave a comment I can let you know when it’s all confirmed. Some amazing people came this year and the place where we all practised was pretty special (which is where this was filmed) - and everyone said they had a good time. And I believe them.

These are the only 4 postures you need to practice. All the rest is window dressing. Discuss. Or just answer the poll down below and let me know why you gave the answer.

You can scale them up in lots of different ways - one is through the entries which I’ve shown in the video. I might post a video about how to scale them down… at the rate I’m posting, expect it in the next few months.

Obviously the reality is that I don’t actually think that these are the only postures that you should practice because I teach all sorts of different kinds of yoga sequences which have loads of other different postures in them. And I think that those sequences have value. But if you were short on time, and thought that yoga only works on a physical dimension, then I would actually just go with these 4. And maybe a couple of others, like something for hip rotation…

And I teach a class where we don’t do any of these postures here at mission.e1 on Wednesdays at 11:30. It’s one hour of Hot 26&2 - you might have come across it called Bikram Yoga in another life. It will change your life. Come to class. 2025-01-20 20:15:57 These are t.. 329 -92% 5 -82%
I like this time of year. You can do less, you can move more slowly, and no one gives you a hard time about it. Except for yoga teachers. Yoga teachers always give you a hard time about everything.

Here are 3 wall stretches for your shoulders that I practice often… I’ve given them names that I’ve made up or appropriated from other people and places. They all do slightly similar but different things, working on thoracic mobility and shoulder flexion, with and without involving the rest of the spine. To a certain extent, ‘working on your shoulders’ can mean ‘working on your thoracic spine.’

I do all of them, some more than others - and you need to hold them for more than the few seconds that the short form video inspired attention span allows. As you can see, I sped it all up as it was even more boring to watch in realtime than it is at high speed. Even though I bemoan social media’s effects on our ability to concentrate, I’m not trying to pretend I’m above it all. It’s reduced my attention span to less than 4 seconds - this whole caption took me almost a week to write.

It should be easier. Holding your foot and putting your head on your knee without bending your knees should be easier, but it’s surprisingly hard. In fact, holding your foot for the whole posture can be pretty hard when you first start out… If you’ve never tried it, come and see!

littlehaque and I teach it in the Hot 26 & 2 aka Bikram Yoga classes here - mission.e1 where I made this video - 3 days a week. Here’s the schedule:

Monday - 11am 60min with littlehaque
Tuesday - 7pm 90min with littlehaque
Wednesday - 11:30 60min with me

I definitely won’t tell you it’s easy, but I think you can do it!

Recently I’d been having a problem with bow - my back would hurt a little bit after I did it, which never normally happens. Then I realised that I wasn’t really using my glutes enough and working to engage them more helped and it now feels fine.

I definitely don’t subscribe to the “don’t squeeze your butt in a backbend” school of thought, but I guess I had been being a bit too relaxed with the movement, as it’s possible to do a posture with more or less attention to what you’re doing. More attention is better, obviously. And most of the time it doesn’t matter too much, you’re just wasting your time, but sometimes, it seems, it can also hurt.

I also realise that not all of these are bow poses in name terms, but also realise that no one really cares, except me.

Don’t really know where I was going with this…

I quite like this low version of straight arm crow, with the knees way outside the arms. That’s where I started. Then I thought of getting into it from child’s pose somehow, then I filmed it, and then I found a really short piece of audio on instagram. And that’s how we end up where we are now. You watching a random snippet of some yoga postures that I once practised. I feel we’ve both learned something here.

Blocks and props don’t always make yoga postures more accessible. How you use them and where you put them makes all the difference. This might be quite extreme in a posture like splits or hanumanasana, but it applies to everything you practice. Pay attention to where you put it - prop/body/mind - it all makes a difference.

This is a follow up to something I posted a while ago with 6 different ways into wheel. In reality, there were only 5 - if you go and look at it you’ll see what I mean. For this post there’s only really 3, as the last one is questionable - just something I saw on instagram of someone doing a fancy drop back, so kind a repeat of what I posted before.

So in total, that makes 8 different ways into wheel pose… can you think of any more? Let me know if you’ve got any ideas.

This is the eka pada sirsasana cycle from Iyengar’s Light on Yoga. It’s missing a posture, and it’s not a sequence I often practise - as you can see if you’re quick enough to catch me getting the leg from behind my head and putting it back again before I stand up. So it’s not really the eka pada sirsasana cycle at all. But it’s something that involves putting your leg behind the head and trying to keep it there while you do a lot of other stuff.

If you can get your leg behind your head, I recommend it. If you can’t, I’m not saying you have to try to get your leg behind your head, but do something like it once in a while. Like pigeon.

Don’t do this. Or - do it if you want to, but don’t say I told you to do it.

Going for the lower wider lower blocks was definitely the way to go, thought I’d easily be able to go for 5, but it suddenly felt quite high up…

What’s this good for? That’s another question to which I do have an answer. I intended to film something more serious, but then started playing around with the blocks again.

Literally. Before I filmed the standing bow that I did, I practised these things, so that I could be warm enough to do the posture.

Is this useful for you? Maybe if you want to take a picture of standing bow for instagram. Some of the things will help improve standing bow, but like all practical aspects of practice, they need to be put into context. Your context will be different.

Also before I did standing bow to film it, I also practised standing bow. Unsurprisingly.

Actually Warrior 2 is interesting enough. 🙄

Maybe don’t do this if you want to continue to love Warrior 2. For the record, the audio doesn’t match the action. I wasn’t feeling good as the height increased.

I’d recommend extreme caution if you want to try it if you’ve got any problems with knees or ankles… the biggest question you face as the blocks get higher is - how do you get into it? That alone is worth the effort of trying it.

Just for the observant among you: the 5-block one has the blocks in a different position because I actually did it first and then realised that my feet weren’t in the best position for Warrior 2. When I tried it later the blocks were too far apart for me to reach and I’d kind of got over the whole experiment. Anything for the ‘gram - apart from re-breaking my ankles or messing my knees up any more than they are… 🤷‍♀️

This didn’t turn out quite like I’d hoped… 😂

This is the next episode on how to use yoga blocks for everybody.

I was pretty tired the day I filmed this and moving slow meant by block 3 I’d been in it more than a minute 🐌 - at that rate all 10 blocks would have been about 4 minutes and I don’t think I’d have any chance with the bottom few blocks as it is 😂.

I reckon there are a few people who would do well with this challenge - like sambalanceyoga & niki.bruckner & thestretchylife - I’ll give it another go on a fresher day and maybe with a higher/easier tower…

Around this time 10 years ago we got married. 10 YEARS AGO!!! 😳😱🤯🥳🤪🤣 We were going to organise a big party to celebrate but instead went to a yoga class together and then had pizza 🍕

These are some of the things we’ve done since then. Actually pretty much sums it all up.

Here are lots of different ways to get your backbone moving. And your hips and shoulders. All of which I highly recommend - except perhaps the last one which is a little bit extra.

In fact as you’ve probably guessed, this is what I did before I practised that posture. Like I say, I don’t exactly recommend doing the posture, but all the preparation for it is 👌 2024-09-19 20:19:20 Here are lots of d.. 559 -87% 11 -60%
How to use yoga blocks part 3.

This is part of my continuing obsession with yoga blocks, and a valuable addition to the discussion on how to use them in a way to make yoga more inclusive.

This one is good for kids and those who don’t take themselves too seriously…

It does have some practical applications - it’s a good warm up for back bending and you really don’t need to start with the tower so high. For me going forward and backward with 5 bricks would probably be enough, but you could start with more - just don’t lean too much weight onto the stack when it’s quite high… and make sure you stack them up neatly otherwise they might not stay up.

I hadn’t seen much of this kind of thing for quite a while, until recently. Before reels, when video wasn’t so great on instagram, in the yoga world there were loads of still shots of people doing crazy things. I’ve definitely got a few of those pictures if you scroll down my feed far enough.

Nowadays there’s less incentive to post shots of a millisecond hold of something on your feed because the algorithm is less likely to push it out further than a reel that has some trending audio and click-baity text over the top of it.

But recently I’ve seen a few shots of things like one-arm handstand which definitely look more like a freeze than a hold. Ultimately it doesn’t matter really - do what you want to do, post what you want to post, in other words you do you. It doesn’t matter because it’s just a marketing tactic. And an obvious one at that. Use a one arm handstand to sell a retreat or a workshop to people who want to learn how to do a regular handstand… or something. Way worse things are done in the name of instagram marketing on a daily basis.

But it’s kind of short sighted. And funny in the grand scheme of handstands. Anyone who has put any serious time into trying to learn a one-arm handstand realises pretty soon that a still shot of you on one arm can in no way represent the process of trying to actually hold one for more than 5 seconds.

Anyway, here’s a posture I didn’t hold, and the proof that I didn’t. 🙄🙄😂 2024-09-13 22:07:21 .. 669 -85% 21 -23%
If you know, you know.

And if you know you also know what I missed out when I filmed it 🙄😂😂

Will these postures help you do standing bow? Yes - to a certain extent. They’ll definitely do something to prepare your body to try and attempt it. But it’s the repetition of the sequence over time that creates the magic, not being able to do the splits standing on one leg.

And this is the beginning part of a sequence that you might know really well, or you might not be familiar with at all. It’s the start of the classic hot yoga class, sometimes called 26&2, but most usually known as Bikram Yoga. I’m going to be teaching the 60-minute version of it at mission.e1 on Wednesdays at 11:30am, starting next week.

Anyone know what I missed in the video? 🤦‍♀️

I don’t think you need goals when you practice yoga. In fact, quite the opposite. In the very long term, these may become an obstacle to your development. However, in the short term, I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all. Having a plan, or a direction you want to head in is a great way to stay on the path. Whatever motivates you to keep taking steps is invaluable, because the more steps you take, the more you realise that taking the steps is what’s important, not where they lead to.
