Core training during pregnancy is so much more than just bird dogs- I promise, there is still so much you can do. And maintaining a strong core is important to prep for labor, promote easier recovery, help reduce pain during pregnancy and PP, improve your posture and balance as your belly grows and center of gravity shifts, and help you feeling strong overall throughout this time.

Everyone is shrinking before our eyes and this is all I can think about. Women are taught to seek thinness above all, no matter the cost. I’m here to remind you that cost is great. We’ve been convinced to be fearful of the wrong things and it’s literally killing us. 2025-08-27 01:24:19 Everyone is shrinki.. 245 -73% 19 -31%

How wild to look back on my journey and the early days when I was just a baby trainer! Despite all the challenges of running a business, one of the greatest gifts of my life is that I wake up and do something I love every single day.

In 2015, I quit my job to be a full time trainer. In 2017, I started working for myself. In early 2020, began growing the business and went all in on mfstrongnyc. The pandemic proved to be our biggest obstacle yet, but persevered and opened a studio in 2022. We have massive and exciting changes happening soon and I also tackle the biggest challenge, becoming a working mom and entrepreneur. Grateful for the lessons, excited (and terrified) for what’s to come!

Some things about my workouts have stayed similar to how they did pre-pregnancy- and many things look a little different! Some of my favorite movements and why (or why not) I’ve modified them:

Pull ups- I stopped doing full pull ups at about 13 weeks because of intra-abdominal pressure. Exclusively using the TRX and keeping my feet planted/ close to me helps minimize that!

Push ups- I cut these out just a few weeks back, around 23 weeks. Elevated push ups would still work, but they’re not quite challenging enough for my upper body at the elevation needed currently, so I’ve swapped for floor presses. I stick with single arm so I can use the other hand to carefully roll onto my back from my side!

Deadlifts- still deadlifting! I practice “hugging the baby” as I lift the weight and keep weight lighter than normal.

Hip thrusts- I cut out barbell hip thrusts as soon as I had a belly and load these unilaterally!

Core work- I still prioritize core, but once again, the goal is to do movements where I can minimize intra-abdominal pressure so a lot of the more challenging core moves I typically do are cut for now!

At 24 weeks, I’m making some minor adjustments to make things more comfortable! Overall, my workouts don’t look too dissimilar to pre-pregnancy- I do a longer warm up focusing on breathing and pelvic floor, take more rest time, and go at a slightly lower intensity. But so many things are still very doable! #prenatalfitness #24weekspregnant #fitpregnancy #pregnancyworkout 2025-08-01 00:54:06 At 24 weeks, I’m maki.. 0 -100% 2 -93%

I was so stressed out about the idea of moving this far into my pregnancy, and though the overall process has been hectic at times, moving day went as seamlessly as I could’ve ever hoped! I can’t thank the team at flatrate_moving enough for everything they did to take care of us and set up our new home. Now- time to get this apartment baby-ready! 2025-07-25 22:52:32 I was so stressed out.. 0 -100% 21 -24%
I thought the years of work I’d done on my relationship to my body, food, and exercise meant navigating body changes in pregnancy would be a breeze.

I thought years of working with pregnant clients would prepare me for the intensity that comes with the way my body looks, feels, and performs changing drastically in a matter of weeks.

Spoiler: it hasn’t been a breeze and I don’t think ANYTHING can prepare you for that experience, outside of living it.

As a body neutral trainer, I’ve felt like a fraud at times struggling in my body. I KNOW intellectually of course, that what my body is doing is incredible, that no one else cares what my body looks like or if it’s limited at the moment. But feelings aren’t rational and this process can be intense and highly emotional.

I’ve come to recognize over these weeks how human and normal it is to struggle, no matter how much work you’ve done- and that two truths can exist: you can be grateful and proud of your body, while still having those moments of insecurity.

Which one of these have you heard?👀

So much of pregnancy and what’s best for us when it comes to exercise is SO individual- yet so much of the advice is still incredibly generic (and incredibly outdated). Note that yes, some of these recs MIGHT be true for someone’s individual situation. But generally, it’s not accurate or sound advice to give blanket guidelines for pregnancy.

My favorite goals to help clients accomplish aren’t necessarily new PRs in the gym (those are fun too!)- but the ones that improve their daily lives: being able to lift their own luggage, carrying their groceries home with ease, getting up and down off the floor to play with their kids or grandkids. That’s what training is really all about and I’m obsessed with my client caro__beth showing her progress in action!! This is 7 months in training together- working on full body strength (with some extra overhead and shoulder work to help her get the luggage in the overhead compartment!) Cause we’ve 👏 been 👏training 👏for this!

We might be exhausted, we might feel like crap, we might not be able to do certain things that we did pre-pregnancy, but we are certainly NOT weak or broken 👍

Just currently in training for the biggest physical feat of my life!

*disclaimer that of course, every pregnancy is different and we do all have differing limitation- personally, I have always tried to empower my pregnant clients to try and remind them just how strong and capable they are, even if it looks a little different during pregnancy. I find these reminders helpful as my body changes and at times, feels less like the one I know. No part of this is to shame anyone who is not currently feeling up to physical activity or can’t partake for some reason. Either way- still rings true. You’re not weak, your body is working hard AF!!🫶

Finally getting to put into practice so much of the work I’ve done with former pre-natal clients for myself!

My workouts since getting pregnant haven’t always been easy, especially with feeling so crummy during first trimester, but they are incredibly intentional! Here’s a workout from last week when I was 12 weeks- with some explanations as to why I’m doing the movements I’m doing.

Let me know what other pregnancy workout content would be helpful!

As a personal trainer, I have mixed feelings about this audio/trend and just generally with speaking in “shoulds” when it comes to fitness. Yes- feeling motivated to get strong is something I will always get behind and I love helping my clients reach strength milestones. But pushups are very difficult and if you can’t do one (let alone 11), there is certainly nothing wrong with you. There’s no single exercise anyone “should” be able to do- every single body is different and there are tons of reasons as to why someone might need a modification. Be patient with yourself and remember- an incline push up, and assisted push up, a knee push up- all COUNT. #pushupchallenge #melrobbins #fitnessmotivation 2025-04-04 00:49:47 As a personal.. 0 -100% 13 -53%
