Jumping into our USA farewell road trip before we move to the Netherlands. I still can’t believe we’re finally visiting one of the places that’s been on my wishlist for years, and staying at the beautiful undercanvasofficial in Zion National Park. This may be our final USA road trip for now, but definitely not our last, because there’s still so much breathtaking nature in this country we love to explore. For now, I’m beyond grateful to share this adventure with my boys. You win some, you lose some, but always embrace what’s coming your way. Sometimes I just pretend those aren’t my kids, haha! While we were all waiting for one of them to finish a Harry Potter ride, and killing time before our return window for the Nintendo ride with our Attraction Assistance Pass universalorlando for Ties (a three-hour wait, which honestly feels ridiculous considering the price you pay for this park and not being able to book anything else in the meantime), we found a cute little bar and pretended it was just the two of us for a moment. This was right after Bo gave a very dramatic performance, and Ties started picking his nose, haha. So yes, we took a little breather to recharge, because Epic Universe is definitely not as inclusive or autism-friendly as Disney. The beginning of the day? A hot mess. But luckily, the kids had a blast! Little flashback and photo dump! Now that we’re sharing more about Florida’s entertainment parks, here’s a look back at our 5th grade field trip to Universal. In April, we went early with Luuk’s best friend to take advantage of the Florida resident deal, stay at one of the Universal hotels (which have amazing local rates!) and get a free day with early access. It was the best! For my non-USA followers: 5th grade is the last year of elementary school here. Most kids move on to a new school for middle school, just like Luuk was supposed to before we found out we were moving back to the Netherlands. So they celebrate with a big end-of-year trip to Universal, and it was a lot of fun! It was also our first time visiting since we moved to Miami. Just like Disney, Universal has 4 parks: 🎬 Universal Studios Florida, where we went before the school trip (focused on movies, shows, and immersive attractions like Harry Potter). 🎢 Islands of Adventure, the one we visited with school, full of thrill rides and themed lands like Jurassic World and more Harry Potter. 🌊 Volcano Bay, a water park with slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river (we skipped it this time). 🌌 Epic Universe, not open yet, so we’re saving it for our family trip! We did it! We survived Disney with three kids, crazy temperatures, and a few meltdowns, but it was so worth it. I honestly wouldn’t recommend going in the summer, unless you’ll move out of Florida, but we made the most of it. For all the autism parents out there, the DAS pass was a lifesaver. The registration process was smooth, well organized, and professional, which we deeply appreciated. I truly can’t imagine doing Disney without it. We enjoyed EPCOT the most, with all the different countries and experiences. And just when we needed it the most, we got “stuck” in France at the champagne bar due to the rain, right after I picked up a bag of chips in Canada. If you know me, you know that’s my favorite combo and guilty pleasure. The prices? Honestly not bad, maybe even cheaper than Miami! After an hour of rain, and getting a little tipsy, we had dinner in Italy and even caught the fireworks at both EPCOT and Magic Kingdom on our way out. What’s your favorite Disney park? Ticked the box, the picture we came for, haha! Can we go back now? Just kidding… but honestly, I wouldn’t recommend visiting Disney during summer unless you really have to, haha. That said, leaving Florida without a visit didn’t feel right either. For Ties, it was definitely the perfect timing. He’s so much more aware of his surroundings now, enjoyed most of the rides, and loved seeing his favorite movies come to life. Five is also such a great age to go, Bo adored the kids’ rides and was even excited for some of the bigger ones! As for Luuk, maybe it was a little late, but he still had a blast with his brothers and dad (since I’m not the biggest fan of rollercoasters). All in all, it was a magical experience. Finally, after eight years of living in Miami, Florida, we made it to the most magical place on earth, where dreams really do come true! But honestly? We could’ve stopped right at our hotel, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. We stayed in a Cars-themed family suite, and not a single detail was left behind. Outside, it felt like the Cars movies had come to life, including the Cozy Cone Motel! The kids were in awe, and so were we. We couldn’t be happier that Ties got to see his favorite movie world come alive, just like in his drawings. We even brought a little collection of his toy cars with us and watched Cars during dinner, in bed! I had randomly found a Cars pajama shirt while shopping for Disney clothes, it was meant to be. Between summer camps, selling our appliances due to the different voltage in the Netherlands, organizing the house for pictures, hosting a garage sale, and baking one more Dutch apple pie… I still managed to squeeze in something I truly love: vintage shopping! My favorite spot, thanks to jenben330 is hands down Red White & Blue Thrift Store at Flamingo Plaza. Pro tip: don’t forget to bring cash or you’ll pay extra at the ATM in the store redwhiteandbluethrift This time, I hit the jackpot with sweaters for the boys from amazing brands like Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, and Vans, all at incredible prices. I couldn’t help it but I almost fall back into my natural habit of twinning the boys, though I know that phase might be coming to an end in the Netherlands, where they won’t wear uniforms and will choose their own outfits each morning. Also scored: a stunning vintage Hugo Boss blazer made of real wool, finally something I can wear in the Dutch weather, since Miami never really gives me a chance to wear my favorite clothing item of all time. I got so excited about all the gorgeous blazers that I’m thinking of bringing a box back with me for anyone who’s interested. While moving back is bittersweet, I truly can’t wait to see my close friends and their kids more often! From pushing strollers through Amsterdam with our newborns, to now returning just before our oldest start high school, it’s a full circle moment. I lost control… and did it! A sweet and powerful reminder of my SCAD, Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, almost three years ago here in Miami. That day, I listened to my body and my intuition, right when it mattered most. I remember wondering what that strange sensation in my right arm meant, yes, right arm, because women often experience atypical symptoms, and most heart data is still based on men. The feeling moved to my shoulder blades. I wasn’t in real pain, but I definitely didn’t feel like myself. Thankfully, we decided to go to the ER. The day before, I’d been on a flight, and if I had just taken painkillers and gone to bed, things could’ve ended very differently. At the hospital, they found cardiac enzymes, meaning my heart was under stress and I had suffered a minor heart attack. What followed was a little rollercoaster. After nine months of medication, my artery healed naturally, no stent, no surgery. I’ll be on medication for life, but I’m beyond grateful that my heart wasn’t damaged, thanks to an amazing Belgian doctor at Baptist Hospital. So, I decided to get this tattoo, in secret with Luukie, because my husband wasn’t exactly on board, haha. My healthy heartbeat, inked on my arm for life, along with the initials of the most important people in my world, my boys. Autism is not just Ties’ journey, it’s ours too. As his parents, and especially for his siblings, growing up in a family with a child with special needs is both a blessing and a challenge. His brothers are the true example of what real inclusion looks like. They instinctively know how to communicate with their brother, no coach or therapist needed. They don’t see any difference, and that’s the beauty of unconditional love. But as you can imagine, it also comes with a lot of patience, adjustments, and difficult moments. Luckily, I get to witness more of their bond than they even realize. It makes me feel incredibly blessed to raise such amazing human beings, already taking care of each other without being asked. To be honest, this might be their future one day, when we are no longer here. But for now, I’m beyond proud. When I asked Luuk if he was okay with Ties joining his neurotypical sailing summer camp, he instantly said, “Yes, of course! I’d love that, I can go back to the beginners group to coach him.” And so we did. I asked the director if Ties could join with a one-day trial before committing to the full week. After day one, he was so excited, he had to capsize his boat and get it back up by himself, and he’s been sailing every day since, alongside his big brother, who’s normally in the highest level group. My heart melted when I saw them walking hand in hand that first morning, Luuk never left Ties’ side. That’s our biggest fear: that he might wander off. But I need to let go, trust them both, and grow with them. Dreams do come true. It’s okay to move at your own pace and walk your own journey. This idea has been in my heart for over a year now, maybe ever since I started enjoying my coffee at Navi. It’s become my second home. I sit in my favorite corner outside to reflect, zoom out, and just breathe. (Though soon, I’ll need to find a new favorite spot in the Netherlands, suggestions are welcome!) I remember the day I burst into tears, and a kind stranger brought me a warm chocolate chip cookie. I’ve even celebrated my birthday there. The owner, Razzy, his beautiful wife, and his lovely mom always make me feel welcome, especially with their perfect mix of good coffee, baked goods, and fresh flowers. As someone from the Netherlands, those flowers touch something deep in me. This place brings everything together. It believes in community and that’s exactly what I sometimes miss. So collaborating with them means a lot. I wanted to create a space where we can share the stories we think no one else will understand, until someone says, “I feel that too.” A space without judgment, where we simply listen. Where advice is offered gently, not pushed. Where families like ours feel seen, safe, and supported. Just like the first Autism Coffee Chat, the timing isn’t perfect but with our move coming up, it’s been hard to find a date. Hopefully, we can plan one more at the end of August before I leave. Taste the Gables came just in time for our final weeks in Miami. As you can imagine, we still have a long to-do list, and yes, it definitely includes trying more restaurants in cityofcoralgables We were so excited to check out lapatagordaus , a Latin seafood spot blending delicious flavors from Ecuador to Miami. Like true Dutchies, we grabbed our bikes and cruised through the beautiful streets of Coral Gables, still our home for just a little while longer, and soaked in every moment together on a spontaneous date night. We discovered dishes we’d never tasted before, the service was incredibly warm and welcoming, and the Taste the Gables menu is a perfect sample of what they offer.
