Competitions should never make us forget why we started dancing 💃✨ They are opportunities to share, to challenge ourselves, and to celebrate growth. Not battlefields where we tear each other down.

Negative rivalry does not make you stronger. It shrinks the community and steals the joy from something that should lift us up 🌱 Respect, on the other hand, fuels growth. When we cheer each other on, when we clap loudly for another studio, when we recognize the courage it takes for every dancer to step on stage, we create a culture where everyone wins.

Other dancers are not your enemies. They are artists on their own journey, facing the same nerves, the same long rehearsals, the same love for dance that brought you here 💜 Imagine the impact if we treated competitions as celebrations instead of wars.

When one of us rises, we all rise together 🌟 That is the kind of dance world worth building.

Cheer loud. Dance hard. Celebrate each other. Because kindness onstage and off will always outlast a trophy 🏆

Sometimes the hardest thing we can do as dancers is accept ourselves exactly as we are in this moment 💭

The industry often tells us to change, to compare, to believe that our worth lies in how much we can adjust ourselves to fit an image. But the truth is, the power has always been in showing up as your whole self.

Self-acceptance doesn’t mean you stop growing. It means you honor your growth while it’s happening 🌱 It means you give yourself permission to take up space, to speak kindly to your body, and to remember that your love for dance is more important than anyone else’s definition of perfection.

Dancers, resilience isn’t just about pushing through pain or proving yourself to others. Resilience is about protecting your joy in movement, even when outside voices get loud. It’s about trusting that who you are right now is enough, and that you deserve to feel proud of yourself today, not just in the future 💜✨

Progress in dance is not always graceful 💔

Sometimes it looks messy. Sometimes it feels slow. Sometimes it’s so subtle you can’t even see it yet. But every rehearsal, every wobble, every correction you take on is shaping you into the dancer you are becoming 🌱✨

We live in a world that celebrates the polished performance on stage, but not enough people talk about the long road that gets you there. The sweat, the frustration, the days where nothing feels like it’s clicking. That is still progress. It’s the kind that builds strength, resilience, and artistry that lasts 💪🌸

Every small step forward matters, even when it doesn’t feel Instagram-worthy 📸

Trust yourself. Trust the work. Trust the process. Because the most beautiful growth rarely happens overnight.

Dancers, you are not failing because it isn’t perfect yet. You are becoming. And that is something worth celebrating 💜

Keep showing up. Keep moving. Keep believing in your journey 🌟

⚠️Trigger Warning: Body shaming, harmful comments

This isn’t just my story.

It’s ours.

When I shared some of the awful things that were said to me about my body in the dance industry, I knew I would not be alone. But reading through your comments… it broke me all over again 💔

Because every single one was another reminder of just how many dancers have been told they are too big, too small, too short, too tall, too much, not enough.

And every time, it chips away at something sacred.
The love we had for dance. The way we saw ourselves. The belief that we belonged in this art form 🩰✨

I want you to know, I cried reading your words. Not just because of the cruelty you endured, but because I could feel the echo of my own pain in every line. I could see the young dancer in me, standing in front of the mirror, wondering if maybe they were right 🪞

But they were not.

They never were.

You are not the comments made about you.

You are not the cruel voices that told you to shrink, to hide, to change.

You are movement, expression, story, art 🎶🎭

So when I say this is not just for me, it is for all of you too I mean it with everything in me ❤️

Every reel I make, every caption I write, every piece of advocacy I pour out… it is to remind us all that we are more than the bodies they tried to diminish.
And if no one has told you today, I am proud of you 🌹 For surviving, for still dancing, for still showing up.

Because you belong here. Exactly as you are.

We have been taught for too long that pushing through pain is noble 💔 That limping into class proves commitment 💃 But the truth is, ignoring your body is not bravery, it is self-destruction ⚠️

Real strength is knowing when to rest 😌 Real commitment is giving yourself the chance to heal so you can come back stronger 💪✨

Taking care of your body is not weakness 🙅‍♀️ It is wisdom 🌟 It is the choice to honor the one instrument you cannot replace 🎶

Dancers, you deserve to move for a lifetime, not just a season 🌸 Protect your body, protect your artistry, protect the joy that dance brings you 💜

Ever try to fall asleep as a dance teacher? 🛏️ The second my head hits the pillow… the brain says no. Instead of drifting off, it’s:

✨ Did I change that 8-count for Monday’s class?
✨ Did I give enough corrections today?
✨ Are the costumes actually arriving on time?
✨ Did I lock the studio door?!
✨ What if the kids forget the ending again?

It’s a never-ending highlight reel playing in my head until 2am… followed by a 7am alarm. Coffee becomes choreography fuel ☕💃

But honestly? Even with the sleepless nights, the endless to-do lists, and the music tracks on repeat in my dreams… I wouldn’t trade this wild teacher brain for anything.

Dance teachers, what runs through YOUR head when you try to sleep? 😅

Numbers can feel like the most important part of a competition… but they’re actually the part I value the least.

In Australia there’s no standardised marking system across dance comps. That means one judge might give you a 90 while I give you an 80. Does that mean you danced worse? Absolutely not. It simply means we weigh things differently.

Here’s the problem: when dancers, parents, and teachers only look at the number, it can feel confusing and even disheartening. The variation doesn’t reflect your worth or your growth.
What really matters is the critique. A thoughtful judge will highlight what you did well, point out areas for improvement, and give you feedback that actually helps you grow as an artist. That’s where the real learning is.

The scores help me keep track behind the table, but in the hands of dancers they often do more harm than good. My hope is always that dancers walk away remembering the words that will make them stronger, not just the numbers on a page.

✨ Feedback grows dancers. Numbers don’t.

Boundaries are not about holding dancers back. They are about protecting them.

When we talk about boundaries in the dance world, some people still hear it as “limits” or “rules that stifle creativity.” But boundaries are what make creativity and growth possible. They are what keep dancers safe, supported, and free to focus on the art they love without fear of harm.

Every dancer deserves to train in a space where child safe policies are in place, where parents are kept in the loop, and where communication is clear. Because safety is not a box to check off. It is an ongoing commitment to protecting the young people who trust us with their time, their bodies, and their dreams.

Studios must prioritize safety over trophies. The medals, applause, and accolades mean nothing if they come at the cost of a dancer’s wellbeing. When ambition ignores the health of the dancer, it is no longer ambition, it is neglect. And neglect leaves scars that last far longer than any competition season.

Boundaries are not walls. They are the foundations of trust. They tell dancers, “You matter more than the prize. You matter more than the product. You are not expendable.”

Set boundaries. Save dancers. That is how we build a healthier dance world—one where artistry thrives because safety comes first.

🎭 Dance Judge Icks… yes, they really did happen.

Judging dance is one of the most incredible jobs. I get to see artistry, talent, and passion from dancers who pour their hearts out on stage. But every so often, something happens that makes me think… did that really just happen?

I’m talking about the icks. The kind of moments that completely pull focus away from the performers. Like a music choice so questionable it left the entire judging panel exchanging side-eye. Or the parent who thought an airhorn in the middle of a lyrical solo was the right vibe. Teachers who yell corrections from the wings louder than the soundtrack. And yes… the parent who leaned over my shoulder mid-performance to film my notes. You can’t make this stuff up.

These things might sound funny after the fact, but in the moment they distract from the one person who should have all the attention — the dancer on stage. As judges, we want to celebrate them, not compete with background noise.

So here’s a friendly reminder. Respect the stage. Respect the art. And if you were thinking of packing an airhorn for comp day… maybe just don’t.

Not all teachers create safe spaces.

Not all teachers lead with kindness.

And I know too many of us carry stories of being made to feel small or unworthy in places that should have been our refuge.

But today, this post is not about them.

This is a thank you to the teachers who get it right. 🌟 The ones who remind us that dance is bigger than steps and counts. The ones who see the human before the technique. The ones who make the studio feel like home, no matter who walks through the door.

To the teachers who check in on their dancers when something feels off. Who know that growth doesn’t always look like higher legs or straighter lines. Who understand that progress sometimes looks like showing up, breathing through fear, or daring to take up space. 💜

To the teachers who push us, but never break us. Who balance high expectations with deep compassion. Who make us believe we are capable of more, not less.

You are changing the culture of dance. You are raising dancers who are resilient and kind, who will carry these lessons long after they leave the stage. Thank you. Truly. 🙏✨

This show was everything I love about live performance wrapped into one unforgettable night. Intimate enough that you felt part of the story, hilarious in a way that made the whole room feel connected, cheeky and a little on the nose in the best way.

Every moment was captivating, the kind of performance that makes you forget about time and just live in the world they create.

It also made me deeply nostalgic for my own burlesque journey. The costumes, the storytelling, the glittering humor mixed with vulnerability… it reminded me of what it felt like to step on stage and embody something larger than myself. That rush of sharing a piece of yourself with an audience, hoping to make them laugh, blush, or simply forget about the outside world for a little while.

I walked away with sore cheeks from laughing, a heart full of joy, and so much admiration for the artistry and courage it takes to create a show like this. La Ronde reminded me why I fell in love with the stage in the first place, because performance at its best is about connection.

💫 If you ever get the chance to see larondeshow take it. You will never forget it.

Every dancer deserves respect. No exceptions.

This feels so simple to say, yet in too many studios and rehearsal spaces, it still is not the reality. I have seen dancers treated with kindness only when they are the “best” in the room or when their talent makes them “worth investing in.” I have watched students praised one moment and torn down the next under the guise of “honesty.” And I have seen too many dancers start to believe that respect is something they must earn through perfection.

But here is the truth: respect is the baseline, not a reward. It is not reserved for the loudest voice or the most advanced performer. It does not disappear when a dancer makes a mistake. And it should never come with conditions.

No dancer should be made to feel small just to be taught a lesson. No dancer should have to endure belittling words disguised as “motivation.” That is not teaching. That is tearing down. And it leaves scars that last far longer than any correction.

Every single dancer, whether they are stepping into their first class, preparing for their final competition, or simply dancing for the joy of it, deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected.

Because when we lead with respect, we create dancers who are not only stronger in their technique, but stronger in their confidence, resilience, and love for the art form.

Respect every dancer. Every time. Always.

⚠️Trigger Warning: This post discusses harmful body-related comments, weight and toxic language used in dance settings. Please take care while reading ♥️

I grew up with teachers who believed in me and gave me opportunities. They pushed me, they challenged me, and they helped me grow. But like so many dancers, I also heard things in the studio that didn’t always sit right.

And once I stepped outside of that space into auditions, panels, and masterclasses, the comments became even sharper. I was told I would never make it looking the way I did. That my size meant I had to work twice as hard. That my body in a costume was something to be hidden or fixed.

The part that still breaks me is that I was already small. I was already underweight. 💔 And still, the message was that I was not enough. That no matter how hard I worked, my body would hold me back.

Those words didn’t motivate me. They haunted me. They followed me into mirrors, into rehearsals, into every stage entrance. They didn’t shape me into a stronger dancer, they planted shame where confidence should have been.

Now, as a teacher myself, I carry those memories like a promise. Words matter. A single comment can stay with a dancer for years. It can ignite their love for dance or extinguish it entirely.

I cannot change what was said to me. But I can choose differently. 🌱 My dancers will never be told they are too much or not enough because of their bodies. They will hear that they are worthy, capable, and deserving of space on stage exactly as they are. 🌟

The cycle ends here. ❤️

✨ If the studio walls could talk… ✨

Every single week I hear something in class that makes me stop in my tracks. One second I am focused on technique and the next I am trying not to laugh out loud at the completely random things that come out of my dancers’ mouths. It is never planned, never expected, and always hilarious.

The best part is that these little one-liners usually arrive in the middle of the most ordinary moments. I will be giving a correction or starting a combination and suddenly a dancer says something that has the entire room cracking up. It is impossible to prepare for the kind of honesty, chaos, and personality that fills the studio on any given day.

These are the moments I carry with me long after class ends. Yes, we are building artistry, discipline, and growth, but we are also creating joy. The kind of joy that lives in inside jokes, silly questions, and the things that only make sense if you were there.

Teaching dance is full of sweat and hard work, but it is also full of laughter. And honestly, those unexpected quotes are what keep me coming back every week.

Behind every dancer there is often a dad quietly holding everything together. 💪 He is the early morning driver 🚗, the prop hauler, the loudest clapper in the audience 👏, and the first one to say “you’ve got this” when nerves set in.

Dance dads are the ones who may not know the difference between tights and leggings at first, but learn quickly because they love supporting their dancer. They sit through long rehearsals, run out for forgotten hair spray, and somehow manage to carry bags that weigh more than the dancers themselves 🎒.

Most of all, they are the safe place dancers return to after a hard day. A hug, a snack, a smile 😊, and a reminder that effort always matters more than medals 🏆.

To all the dads who show up, cheer loud, and love endlessly ❤️, we see you and we are so grateful for you. Happy Father’s Day to every dance dad. You make a difference in more ways than you will ever know.

So many dancers have been taught to believe that their role is only to show up, stay quiet, and follow instructions. But dance is not just about perfecting shapes or executing choreography. It’s about expression. It’s about being heard. It’s about finding your voice through movement and knowing that voice matters.

I wish every dancer could hear this: you are not just a body in the room. You are not just there to fill space or to blend in. Your perspective, your thoughts, your questions, and your feelings all have value.

Somewhere along the way, many of us were told that asking questions was disrespectful, or that speaking up was defiance. We were taught to mistake silence for discipline and control for structure.

But none of that is true.

Respect in the studio is not about fear. It is about being safe enough to speak, to explore, to challenge, and to grow. When dancers know their voices are valued, they dance braver, freer, and more authentically.

That’s the environment I want for every student who walks into my class.

Because your voice has power. Your presence has impact. And the world of dance is stronger, richer, and more honest when we nurture not only the steps, but also the humans taking them.

One of the best shifts I’ve made as a teacher is learning to be transparent with my students. When I share why we’re doing an exercise, admit what I used to struggle with, or even let them see that I don’t have all the answers—it completely changes the room. Suddenly, it’s not teacher vs. student, it’s humans learning together.

That honesty builds trust. And with trust, dancers feel safe to ask questions, try new things, and take risks. Transparency doesn’t lower expectations—it raises them, because dancers aren’t afraid of failing in front of you. They know you get it.

✨ Teachers—how do you use transparency to help your dancers grow?

We sometimes forget the weight of our words. As dance teachers, what slips out in a moment, a comment about a body, a sigh when a step isn’t perfect, a comparison between students, can echo for years. What feels small to us can live big in them.

Our dancers already spend hours in front of a mirror. They’re learning to see themselves, to understand their bodies, to trust their movement. When we tie their value to shape, size, or “looking the part,” we plant seeds that grow into shame, not strength.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. We have the power to use our words differently. To remind them their bodies are not problems to fix but instruments of expression. To show them that movement is joy. That lines are only one part of the art, and self-worth is never the cost of training.

Our classrooms are where they build not only technique, but identity. Let’s protect that. Let’s choose words that build, not break. Let’s leave them with echoes of encouragement, the kind they’ll carry into every mirror for the rest of their lives.

One of the hardest lessons I learned as a teacher? If a dancer doesn’t understand my correction, repeating it over and over isn’t going to help.

They’re not ignoring me, they’re not being lazy—they just don’t learn the way I was explaining it. Some kids need visuals, some need a story or metaphor, some need to feel it in their body. When I started shifting my language and giving multiple ways in, that’s when I started seeing the lightbulb moments.

We’re not just teaching steps—we’re teaching people. And people all learn differently. That’s the beauty (and the challenge) of being a teacher.

💬 Teachers—what’s your favorite way to reframe a correction so it actually lands?

This one weighs heavy on me. ❤️‍🩹

As dance teachers, choreographers, and studio owners, we hold something incredibly precious in our hands…the trust of young dancers and their families. And with that trust comes responsibility.

Not just to train them, not just to prepare them for competitions or performances, but to protect them.
Because before they are dancers, before they are athletes, before they are “the future of dance,” they are children. Children with growing bodies, fragile minds, and hearts that can either fall deeper in love with dance… or be broken by it.

Too often, I’ve seen dancers asked to give everything to their art without being given the safety they deserve in return. It is not enough to focus on medals, scores, or opportunities if the very foundation isn’t there. Without safety, none of it matters.

Safety is not an optional extra. It is not “overkill.” It is the baseline. It is the promise we must make every single time a child walks into the studio: that they will be seen, respected, and protected.

When we fail at that, the cost is devastating. A child should never have to recover from the place that was supposed to nurture them.

So let’s choose differently. Let’s set standards. Let’s make policies. Let’s be the adults they can trust. Because protecting their bodies, their minds, and their futures is not just our duty…it’s our privilege.

As a judge, there are things I see over and over again that make the difference between a routine that shines and one that feels unfinished. And honestly, it’s not always about the triple turns or the highest leap.

Age appropriateness matters right from the start. If a dancer is wearing something that doesn’t suit their age, moving in a way that feels too mature, or performing to music that doesn’t reflect where they are in life, it pulls focus from their dancing. I want to see their strengths, not the distractions.

Here’s the truth. If your dancer doesn’t understand the theme or concept, neither will we. At six years old, that might just mean “we’re having fun at the beach.” By thirteen, it should mean they can tell me through their body and face what they’re dancing about. Authentic emotion translates, but only when it’s understood first.

The stage is not a rehearsal space. That is what the studio is for. When a routine isn’t performance-ready, it shows, and it doesn’t serve the dancer’s confidence either.

Entrances, exits, bows, and even the way they walk on stage all count. Performance starts the second they step into the light and it ends only when they have walked off with intention.

And please, don’t over-choreograph. More is not always better. Too much jammed in means I cannot see the artistry, the textures, or the breath between moments. Sometimes the strongest choice is simplicity, done well.

These details matter. Not just for scores, but for shaping dancers into true performers.

Competitions can be incredible. They build resilience, stage experience, and community. They give us goals to work toward and chances to perform. But they are not the only pathway into a professional career.

I’ve seen dancers with walls full of trophies never book a professional gig. I’ve seen dancers who never stepped on a competition stage end up working all over the world.

Competitions are just one chapter of your story—not the whole book. Winning a medal doesn’t predict your future, and not winning doesn’t erase your potential.

The industry is wide, messy, diverse, and full of opportunities that don’t care about your medal count. So let’s stop equating competition results with career success.

Celebrate the wins, yes.

Learn from the losses, yes.

But don’t measure your worth—or anyone else’s—by a score sheet.

Your artistry and your future are so much bigger than that. ♥️

I’ve judged so many competitions where the most unforgettable dancer wasn’t the one with the craziest tricks.

It was the dancer who walked on stage and owned the room. The way they looked at the audience, told a story with their body, and made you feel something—THAT’S what sticks.

Don’t get me wrong, technique matters. But you can train all the pirouettes in the world and still be forgettable if you’re not communicating.

Presence, confidence, and storytelling are skills too—and honestly, they’re the ones that make people fall in love with your dancing.

For so long in dance, we’ve been told that the way to “make it” is to grow thicker skin. To take the harsh words, the comparisons, the cutting feedback and just let it roll off our backs. To toughen up.

But the truth is… dancers don’t need thicker skin. They need safer spaces.

I’ve been in studios where the energy was so heavy you could feel it the moment you walked in.

Dancers sitting at the barre with their shoulders hunched, afraid to try in case they got it wrong. I’ve also been in studios where respect was the foundation — where dancers weren’t afraid to take risks because they knew their teacher wanted them to grow, not break.

The difference? Night and day.

You can love being pushed. You can love working hard. But if the environment doesn’t feel safe, no amount of toughness will help you thrive. Fear doesn’t build resilience — it builds walls.

What you don’t need is cruelty disguised as “motivation.” What you don’t need is to feel small in the place that’s supposed to make you strong.

What you do deserve is a teacher who demands your best… without making you feel less. A teacher who pushes you, but with respect. Because when safety and respect are present, bravery follows.
That’s where real resilience lives.

It’s not always the 6 pirouette turns or the backflips that stick with us…

Sometimes it’s the little details… the respect, the polish, the thoughtfulness… that make us want to stand up and hug every dancer and teacher who made it happen.

From clean bows 🙇‍♀️ to age appropriate choices 🎶👗 to tap routines that are actually tap 👞… these are the underrated competition wins that mean the world.

Teachers… thank you for instilling these habits.

Dancers… thank you for carrying them on stage.

We notice. We appreciate it. And yes… we get emotional about it. 💙
