This is where a Japanese concept called jo-ha-kyū can radically shift the way you see your home. I touched upon it in last month’s A-Zen of Design, but it’s such a beautiful concept, and so relevant to the way I think about home, I wanted to share it with you in more depth.

Ahh, October, one of my favourite months. The colours of nature start to ripen into gloriously rich hues of gold and terracotta. It’s (usually) not yet too cold, instead being crisp and clear, perfect for walking. With its slower pace, it follows the hectic lurch back to business that was September, heralding the swing back to a more sustainable state of centredness. I hope.

Autumn is the prelude to wintering too, when we get to properly hunker down. Soon, we’ll start imagining where the Christmas tree might go, and consider stocking up on Quality Street. Snacks, soups and stews replace the salads and sandwiches of summer, and home absolutely comes into its own. October is the hinge between autumn’s vibrancy and winter’s rest.

WABI SABI IS OVER: Design trends tend to come and go, but deeper philosophies endure. Wabi-sabi, the Japanese art of appreciating the patina wrought of time, taught us to value the impermanent and imperfection. But when ‘imperfection’ becomes curated, or commodified, I think it loses its meaning.
.
When the aesthetic becomes a mainstream styling trick (fake cracks, factory “patina”), the spirit is lost. If it’s not authentic, it doesn’t work. Bottom line, wabi sabi was always about warmth, not ‘cool’.

What matters now is subtler: an atmosphere that calms your nervous system, the quiet that lets you exhale. And of course there’s another Japanese word for it: yūgen.

ABOUT LAST WEEKEND: I spent it in Bath, with the ‘Transformational Speaking’ coaching legend that is Gail Larsen (video excerpt from the thecouragetobepodcast) and a small group of equally legendary hayhouseuk authors (handles below)! JOY? I drove from Kent to Brighton last week, early enough to be caught in the morning commuter traffic. I watched children trudging to their various schools. I saw mums laden with push chairs, toddlers and shopping, drivers furious at the slow pace, and people standing forlornly at bus stops waiting to be taken to work. And then the first drops of rain began to fall. Most, from kids to adults, looked pre-occupied, tired and miserable. 
.
As I drove on in the warm, dry bubble of my car, it felt as if I had been granted a brief entirely objective perspective. It looked for all the world as if the gears had simply turned on another day and everyone dutifully slotted into their pre-determined positions, no choice, no variation, just ‘do’ until the next life stage, and so it goes on. 
.
My overriding feeling was surely this can’t be the way to ‘do’ life! Where’s the joy?
.
That of course, got me musing further, wondering, actually what is joy? And can it have a purpose different from happiness and distinct from pleasure. 
.

Making your own body care products is ridiculously easy and super satisfying. Besides why smear your skin with petroleum derivatives, preservatives, additives, colourants, synthetic perfume or endocrine disrupting chemicals?!

Instead you’ll save a fortune and be clean and green into the bargain. Lowering your toxic load along the way. They make v thoughtful gifts for friends and family too. Once you know you know! 
.
I’ve linked to all the ingredients in my Amazon Shop under Blissful Bathing (link in bio). Recipe below! Or of course you could use the organic Shea butter (or cocoa butter) on its own. Why pay extra in the shops for plastic packaging, a marketing spiel and ingredients that are cheap only for the manufacturer, and over-priced and potentially harmful for you? 

Hand cream instructions… 
Place a small bowl over a pan of hot water. 
Take 1/4 cup shea butter
And 1/8 cup sweet almond oil
Melt and mix together.
Remove from heat. 
Add 1/2 tablespoon pure beeswax
Add essential oils of your choice, approx 20 drops total. 
Mix and pour into a sterilised glass jar. That’s it! 
.
I’ve used cups as my measurement but you can use any measure as long as you are proportionally consistent. Some recipes use more beeswax but I prefer less. Best to experiment to see what you prefer. Any dodgy batches can just get melted down and reused. Enjoy!

GUILT is not something that has ever been a big driver in my life. But I sometimes feel it tugging at me when I think about time with my son, or time I could have spent with him but didn’t. The juggle of work vs ‘fun’, being a grown-up vs ‘fun’. The usual stuff. After all, guilt is not if nothing a universal emotion.

But it got me wondering: is guilt ever useful? Or is it just self-sabotage dressed up as morality? I present my case for, and against in my latest Substack post. Because it turns out, not all guilt is bad, but it pays to know the difference…

CLEAN IS NOT NECESSARILY HEALTHY: If the cleaning and scenting products you use contain artificial fragrance or synthetic chemicals. And yes, that includes some of those super posh candles in the fancy boxes. (Did you know: natural beeswax candles are both detoxifying and hypoallergenic.)

A healthy home is not about spotless surfaces, it’s about clean air, natural light and mental space.  When we rid our homes of things that harm and replace them with things that actively heal, we take a massive step forward in getting our homes on side to support us.

RUGS ROCK! Always spend the most you can afford on your floor. This is a golden rule of home makeovers. Your floor underpins everything that sits on it, and frankly, is a complete pain if you need to change it later. So real wood, ceramic tile, wool carpet, terracotta, all materials to last for the long term. 
.
But you’re not yet finished! I did this in my old home. I loved my wooden parquet floors (from ecorauk) and stopped right there. After all, I wanted to see them, glory in them, and definitely not cover them up.  However, I was missing a trick by underestimating the power of rugs! They are literally the ultimate finishing touch, like art for your floor. 
.
So just as I always advocate for layering across walls (colour, paper, texture, art), so you must do the same across your floors. 
.
With this in mind it was a joy to curate a collection of rugs from ruggable_uk It’s a selection that embodies my signature style of easy elegance inspired by nature with a lot of a texture and a bit of pretty. MOOD MUSIC: More than anything else, the colours that you choose for your home set its mood music. Colour directly impacts your energy levels, and its associated psychology is a subject that has already filled many a tome. In very simple terms though, colour is emotion. Certain colours can make you feel happy, on edge, calm, quiet, excited or flat and every nuance in between. Clearly they affect different people in different ways, but very broadly speaking we can think of pure colour in terms of warm versus cool; light versus dark; bright versus dirty.
.
A balanced palette to my mind combines aspects of all three of these divisions and the best way to start is by imagining the feeling you wish to create in any room..

YOUR BRAIN LIES: We like to think of our brains as reliable, rational, and perceptive. That they enable us to be fully in charge of our actions and responses. But in truth, our brains are prone to shortcuts and biases. In fact, psychologists have shown that our minds routinely bend reality in order to keep us safe, efficient, and comfortable. They take assumptive mental leaps based on previous experiences, or routinely fill in gaps with explanations that are simply not true.

In other words: your brain lies to you. Not with malicious intent, but to protect you. The trouble is, those lies can quietly shape how you feel, what you believe, and the choices you make. And if you don’t question them, you risk living according to its distortions rather than reality.

In my latest Substack post I share the three main ways your brain lies to you, and seven ways not to fall foul of it. Because, knowing your brain distorts reality is only half the battle. The power lies in catching these distortions in real time, and learning how to gently question them.

YOU’VE BEEN FED A LIE: wellness doesn’t start with the supplements you take, it starts with what surrounds you.

The work of one neuroscientist who radically shifted the way I think about this. Stephen Porges created something called The Polyvagal theory. In essence he says that “Safety is the treatment.” According to his research, without your conscious awareness, your nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety or threat. If it senses something if finds threatening, it triggers stress responses. It puts your body into survival mode. So before your thinking mind gets involved, your body is already reacting: tightening up, shutting down or softening and opening up. But here’s the kicker… Porges argues that true healing of any kind can only begin when the nervous system detects safety (physically, emotionally, socially). Without this no therapy, meditation or even lifestyle change can fully take root.  As he puts it, “The body doesn’t care about words, it listens to cues in the environment. “
