Enjoyed chatting about creatine on bbcwomanshour this morning! 

There’s now a growing body of research showing potential benefits for midlife women, especially during perimenopause and beyond.

Drawing on reviews like the one by Dr Abbie Smith-Ryan, here’s what creatine may support:

✅ Brain energy and mental clarity (especially under stress or fatigue)
✅ Muscle strength and lean mass, even without heavy lifting
✅ Bone geometry improvements that may reduce fracture risk
✅ Support for low mood and motivation
✅ Exercise recovery and walking speed in postmenopausal women

The usual dose is 5g creatine monohydrate per day. You don’t need to “load” it, just take it consistently over time.

That said, this isn’t a magic fix.

Creatine won’t replace steady meals, emotional regulation, or supportive movement and it won’t fix the nervous system dysregulation that so many women experience in midlife.

Supplements are the bricks. But your mindset, habits, and relationship with food and body? That’s the foundation.

Imagine sitting down at this table and feeling happy, able to enjoy the meal without scrutinising the menu for ages. Without feeling judged and guilty for eating. Without worrying that you've got it wrong or that you'll have to make up for it tomorrow. 

This is what is achievable when you call time on food rules that keep you trapped in familiar cycles. 

Diet culture wants us to need it. It wants us to lack trust and feel a failure so it can keep being in control of the solutions it sells. 

But on the other side of food rules is calm, clarity and control. Not coming from a bespoke meal plan, but from inside your own body and head because you finally just know what feels right.

Anxiety is a common symptom in menopause and feeling anxious can often impact on our relationship with food and our food choices too. Sound familiar?

My clients often report eating to cope with or settle unwanted feelings, but often the choices made are loaded with yet more unwanted feelings; hello guilt and shame and frustration, I swear I only saw you yesterday 🙄

It's easy to find ourselves trapped in vicious circles, but here are 3 tips to use food in a different way and feel less anxious in the process 👇💚

1) Tongue action!

Before making that knee jerk decision to grab another snack, take a moment to run your tongue along your teeth and under your lips. This generates saliva, a sign to your body that it is safe, as food must be on its way and there are no tigers. 

Whether it is or it isn't is not the point here. This small gesture gives a moment's pause to calm your nervous system and allows you to make decisions that feel more connected to what you actually need. 

It probably isn't another snack, but perhaps a few moments to tap out and recalibrate.

2) Keep an eye on the clock.

Avoid long gaps between meals. It's shocking how many of us skip lunch for example (or eat it standing up!), and yet fuelling well at regular intervals with some carbs, protein and fibre helps to steady blood sugars, a signal to your body that you are safe.

3) Make friends with carbs. 

When eaten in a balanced way from a variety of different sources, these foods give us the fuel we need to thrive. Playing roulette with our carb intake tends to create under fuelling which adds to anxiety.

If the body isn't sure when it's next fuel is coming, or if it's going to have enough of it, it adds to anxiety. We're wired for survival. Without enough carb, choices are more likely to become knee jerk and disturb the equilibrium and so the vicious circle begins...

Exhausting isn't it, but midlife eating doesn't have to involve second guessing your every mouthful. 

Second guessing is your brains natural coping mechanism to the fear it starts to feel around food when you lose trust in your body and everyone else seems to know better. So if this feels familiar don't worry...

It's so common to pick up diet baggage on our journey through life and super common by midlife to have a few suitcases worth. The trouble is none of it fits together, there are so many contradictions, and it spins us into overwhelm. 

Add to this that our body seems to have a mind of its own and our need to be just told what to eat deepens. 

In the menopause wellness space there's also a lot of people with supposed solutions to your second guessing crisis too. More rules, more tailored plans, more 'you've just got to stick to this' advice...

But what decades of working with real humans juggling real life has taught me is that what we think we need to solve our problems, is never what we actually need. 

To feel calmer inside our own heads and stop the second guessing, we need to start to connect better with our signals and needs. This takes practise and a different framework from the one we've been taught all our lives. 💚

Somewhere along the line they stopped being a piece of fruit and started being the devil. 

Not sure why? 🤔 Did Slimming World and diet rules have anything to do with it? 

Or is their PR department just a bit shitter than the avocados? 😂

More support is not going to prevent weight regain.

Yes, following a healthy balanced diet and moving well will help with weight regulation but it's not as simple as this. The body doesn't lie back and do nothing when it's put into extreme restriction and then allowed to go back to 'normal'.

Narratives that keep making out this is all within our conscious control if we just keep trying hard enough are keeping us trapped in repeated cycles. 

For some weight loss injections are an essential part of their treatment plan for better health outcomes and like many other medications they need to remain on them longterm. But for others seeking thinness at all costs, we have to see all sides to this and be well informed in the decisions we make for our long-term health and happiness.

Not true and not helpful.

Yes, protein matters. But no, it doesn’t have to come in a £3 wrapper.

Most women are already eating more than they think and it’s about pattern of eating and overall balance of how protein fits in and around all the other nourishment we need.

If your focus is weight loss at all costs you will feel much better if you change the lens through which you look.

It's a tough ask in a world so obsessed with our body weights being the measure of everything from health to us being deserving of love, but staying trapped in cycles where we're constantly chasing movement on the scale doesn't make us happy and if certainly doesn't improve our health.

The truth?

Big stuff. This midlife health shit is hard to navigate. But you do have a choice. Just because the diet culture voice is the loudest, it doesn't mean it's right.

Just because we have some gremlins in there about our food relationship, our bodies, how good or bad we are at nailing this healthy eating thing, it doesn't mean we're flawed or failing. 

But it does spark the need for curiosity and compassion as to what is really going on.
