  • “What do you do?” He asked. For a moment I nearly went back into my habitual response of describing the business I ran for several years. The one that will always feel like a part of my soul, but that I stepped away from 5 months ago. It feels familiar to tell people about my former life. Sometimes it makes me feel more interesting to have a “thing” — a purpose — to tell someone about. Other times it’s simply easier than describing the free-flowing space I now exist in. But I knew that at the core of his question was actually, “Who are you right now?” So I answered that instead. “I explore the world, and therefore myself,” I replied. “I create art and learn something as often as I can. I practice staying open when I want to close. I follow my intuition and trust where life takes me.” I didn’t give him the backstory of what my business was once-upon-a-time. I just shared what felt true in that moment. When I stepped away from my business last year, I decided to stop trying to figure out “what’s next” for my life and career. Trying to “figure it out” was making me miserable, and I knew that my next wondrous purpose would never come as a result of being forced. So I dropped the intention entirely. If it took me 10 years to find my next calling, then I was finally at peace with that. I trusted that life was guiding me exactly where I was meant to go, and in the right timing. I can tell you now that surrendering deeply to the flow of life has become one of the most extraordinary journeys I’ve ever been on. Synchronicities abound because I trust in the unfolding path instead of trying to control it. The right people walk in in mind-boggling ways. Bliss multiplies because there is no painful attachment to how the plot unfolds. My purpose doesn’t always need to be something that makes sense in a LinkedIn bio. It can be a moment — this moment — simply because I’m alive. It is the in-between, because the space between mountains is just as essential as the mountain itself. My purpose can be to live the questions, so that my life can be the unfolding answer. So what do I do? I’m fully alive. Right now. And for me, that is more than enough.
  • I was on a date with someone when we found ourselves on a boardwalk in LA, ogling beautiful beachfront homes. He asked me what my dream home would look like, and where. I said… “I want to have homes all over the world, but if I picked one? Maybe somewhere along the coast of California. Oceanfront, but on a hill so you feel wrapped in the ocean and trees simultaneously, with a view of the whole world around you. Lots of light, and antique doors that lead to a big backyard, shaded by trees and colorful flowers.” He laughed. “Okay…now be realistic.” I smiled. “I am.” I have no idea how I’ll afford a home like that one day. Maybe instead of an oceanfront oasis in Malibu it’ll be a simple stone building in Spain. Or a jungle treehouse in Costa Rica. Who cares? That’s not the point. The truth is that I could live a deliciously blissed out life in a little apartment away from everything. I’m often delighted by how little I need to be happy. But dreaming without limits is fun. Why not? Abundance is actually what you are when you’re living in your highest alignment. At its core, abundance is simply about possibility, while scarcity is about limitation. People often equate money and abundance as the same thing; they’re not. Money is more like a wave. Abundance is the whole ocean. When you dissolve the conditioning that says “there is a right way to live,” you begin to realize that there are endless possibilities. For all of it. For you. So dreaming of an oceanfront home on the Pacific Coast? Why not dream of that instead of watering down my desires to something that feels easier to achieve? When we say “be realistic,” what we really mean is: Conform to the limitations you’re currently choosing. How about dreaming that absolutely anything is possible instead? What about living in such deep trust in The Universe that you know you’re being divinely guided to your dreams, or something even better? I believe that you are co-creating with an abundant universe, full of infinite possibilities, instead of just being some random human whittling away on earth by yourself. 😅 Believing in limitless possibilities might, in fact, be the most realistic thing about me.
  • I moved to Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹🥰 In February 2020 I flew out to London to look at rental apartments — it was always a dream of mine to live in Europe! I later shifted my move to Brooklyn, where I was ready to sign a lease. Then the pandemic happened just a few weeks later and my well laid plans were starting to look like a dumpster fire. I stayed in LA, then spontaneously moved to Austin 6 months ago. I really enjoyed living in Austin and perhaps I’ll be back one day, but the European itch never quite went away. I’ve always felt most at home when I’m in Europe, like a part of my soul is known here that is dormant everywhere else. Adding to that, it’s been a desire of mine for a while to reconnect to my Portuguese ancestry. My grandparents immigrated to California from Portugal, and my grandma had a big hand in raising me, so I got glimpses of our culture growing up. But it didn’t help that my family was determined to assimilate as Americans and it felt like so much became lost in translation. In recent years, my mom and I have been rekindling our connection to Portugal, so I knew it was where I wanted to move to first. I intended to stay for a month and then digital nomad myself all over Europe indefinitely…but now that I’m here it’s hard to imagine leaving! So, I’m in the process of making this my longer term home. 🙂 I had the idea to move to Europe only a couple months ago, and as soon as it popped into my head I felt a hefty surge of “WHY THE HECK NOT?” There are always so many reasons to not do something that feels big or difficult, but all it takes is a whisper of possibility to say yes. The last time I lived abroad was when I moved to Japan when I was 22 — 10 years ago, holy shiznit?! I was in a similar place of transition, flow, and adventure then, too. Japan is where I started my first business, got my first dog, fell in love and stayed a year-and-a-half longer than I intended, and really began to find my creative voice in the world. I don’t know where this adventure will take me – I like to live in the juicy place between “has a plan” and “allows magic to unfold in the flow.” It’s an ever-evolving discovery…just the way I like it. ✨
