September is passing in a flash and as it’s #secondhandseptember month, I thought I would share the things that I make a beeline for on eBay, FB marketplace, in charity shops and and at recycling warehouses:

1: Vintage vases - especially these Constance Spry ones and the little urn vases. They are just so beautiful and perfect for something a little different when you want to arrange some flowers
2: Furniture for painting. Made from hardwood, strong and steady, I love an antique kitchen dresser or cabinets that can be given a lick of paint. Controversially, I don’t care what type of wood it is, if it’s in the house clearance warehouse it’s one step away from landfill IMO and it’s better upcycled and loved than left.
3: Vintage art! Especially blousy floral oil paintings. I can’t get enough of them. I always get asked about the painting of the woman - I got this at Greenwich market for a fiver 25 years ago and she’s travelled with me everywhere I’ve lived!

Happy Sunday everyone I hope you have a lovely restful day.

As usual, I’m completely late to this Sabrina Carpenter House Tour trend, but I took a few video clips of the house during the sunny moments of weather this week and finally put something together about 3 weeks behind everyone else 🫣

If you are new around here you’ll notice that I don’t feature the kitchen, as that’s a work in progress. The news on the kitchen renovation plans are that we are still waiting on our pre-planning application! It’s taking ages and if you’ve done a recent Reno I’d love to know how long your planning took?

Have a lovely Sunday whatever you are up too. We have family over today for Sunday lunch so I better get up and start prepping the veg!

Ad. As we move forward with the plans for our kitchen extension and complete renovation, I have been moodboarding kitchen colours to work out what kitchen design scheme would suit us best.

I’ve always been a fan of deep and rich red tones, so when I discovered the new ‘Sumac’ paint colour from tomhowleykitchens , I had to experiment and see what textiles, textures and tones would work alongside this earthy red hue. A bold and considered shade that feels modern as well as sophisticated and timeless, I found that it was incredibly versatile. Pink and red have always been a winning combination for me, and I could imagine kitchen cabinets in ‘Sumac’ alongside walls and tiles in subtle plaster tones. I also loved it with mid-tone yellows featuring brown undertones, as well as sage greens, light blues and the most surprising pairing: ‘Sumac’ with lilac! These colours just looked beautiful together, and I could imagine a kitchen in ‘Sumac’ alongside seating upholstered in a lilac velvet for a design scheme that would work for every season.

All these colours are definitely shades that I would want to feature in my new kitchen, but what tones would you pair with ‘Sumac’?

[ad as mentions gifted product] // 🌸Recent house pics, including ones of the sitting room taken today in this very dark and autumnal weather.

I treated myself to a bunch of pink dahlias this morning and I opened up a glorious new lampshade handmade for me by Charlotte Krone of rediscovered_by . I first discovered the textile art of Charlotte at Focus at the design Centre, and wrote about her a lot on my blog because I loved what she did with pressed flowers. When she knew I was in the market for a new lampshade, she very kindly made one for me using her sweet pea mural.

I have been toying with the idea of painting this sitting room a dark green colour. I feel like now I have a pink chair in here a green could really work. However, the effort of it all is slightly putting me off, but once I get something in my brain, I can’t stop thinking about it! 🫣 I put a poll stories and most of you said to keep it this soft brown colour. Not sure what to do….🤔

Happy Wednesday!

End of summer / start of September photo dump 📸

From the most amazing holiday to efteling , dahlia season , a wedding anniversary and a flying trip to Reading to watch my husband perform, to lazy family Sunday’s and antique shopping with friends - it’s been a fun transition into September.

My son started his new SEND school last week and despite me having sleepness nights about it all year, he took it in his stride and has settled in with no issues! 🙏

I’m easing myself back into routine and was delighted to have my first post published on mad_about_the_house ‘s Substack last week. I’m also doing A LOT of cleaning. Everything is a total mess after the summer break! 🫣🤪

I hope you’ve all had a good first week of September! At least the sun is holding out!

With back to school and the change of month/season, it kind of feels like a new start, so I thought I would reintroduce myself on Instagram!

Hi! I’m Melanie, and I like to use colour in my home (although I’m not a maximalist). I like to paint and decorate A LOT. I love a bit of floral seasonal styling and I like to do achievable DIY projects (nothing over the top, I prefer simple, classic and timeless looks). I’ve also had a few DIY disasters which I always document, because life isn’t perfect! And I have a family of foxes that like to hang out in the garden and on Insta stories.

If this sounds like your sort of thing, then welcome to my home! It’s lovely to have you following along.

A tribute to _jesshurrell ❤️

I’ve not posted on socials for a week and it doesn’t feel right coming back on here and not honouring Jess. I’m sure most of you follow her, but if not, she tragically passed away last weekend after a long battle with cancer.

I knew Jess for a long time. We went away on quite a few press trips together over the years and became friends. We had a lot in common - we both liked music, Glastonbury, going to Ibiza, interiors (obvs), and we both had young children, so we always bonded over what was going on with our respective broods.

I’ll remember Jess for her infectious smile, how much she loved life, how she was an incredible parent and for how much she adored her family. She was hugely supportive to me during a particularly hard period a few years ago and I’ll forever be grateful to her for that. I feel very privileged that we had a long and enjoyable day together, just the two of us, this summer at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show. Jess invited me to go with her and we had a right laugh, taking pictures of each other and looking at the gardens. I saw her briefly again after that, but it sticks in my mind both of us saying as we left that we should definitely do it again together next year.

My heart breaks for the Hurrell family and her wide circle of friends. They do not deserve this. SHE did not deserve this. She should have been allowed to watch those kids grow up.

I’ll miss you mate.

Hello! I thought I’d share the final paint colour for those who have enquired on this secondhand cabinet. It’s ’Caddie’ by paintandpaperlibrary . It’s a brownish shade with a strong yellow undertone which makes the colour really warm. A lot of the brownish neutrals I looked at appeared grey in this north facing room, but adding a brown with yellow counteracted that problem.

I was going to add some trim to this cabinet and I’ve bought the strip moulding, but I just do not have the enthusiasm at the current time to do it!

The lamp on top is my favourite christopherfarrcloth shade, with a lauraashleyuk lamp base. The rattan tray is from dunelmuk . The door pulls are by corstonarchitecturaldetail

I picked up this old cabinet from the furniture recycling centre for this corner. It’s a great sturdy piece and fits this alcove a treat. However, it was stained and damaged and I didn’t like the orange tone of the wood, so I intended to give it a ‘quick’ coat of paint.

As the room already has aubergine accents , I thought it would look nice in a deep reddish purple. Wrong! As soon as I put it in the room in that colour, I hated it. The room is quite slim and the cabinet in that colour totally dominated. This secondhand cabinet was supposed to be a functional piece of furniture, not a standout piece, so dark wasn’t the right shade for it.

I then dug out an old tin of leftover eggshell in a soft taupe colour, with the aim of blending the cabinet in with the rest of the room, but it just felt too flat. It did nothing for the space. I knew then that I needed a mid tone: something that’s light but has a bit of personality. I also wanted it to add some warmth, so I chose a soft brown yellow.

I’m happy with the final colour. It adds interest without being too overbearing and it works well with the stone brown walls, pink chairs and plummy pops in here.

But, what do you think? Is the final colour the best colour? Or, did you prefer the red or the taupe?

Morning! I thought I’d share a summer round up with few snaps from August. I can’t believe we are on week four of the school summer holidays already 😦.

1 & 2: my new yellow front door painted in Turmeric by grahamandbrown (previously declared ad).
3: my bathroom in the heat wave sunshine.
4: another summer spent visiting all the theme parks. It’s just been me and Jaxon this school break as my husband’s been away working, but I’ve cherished the mother & son time.
5: outdoor dining. I will miss this courtyard space as we are going to build on it with the kitchen extension.
6: double trouble
7: upcycling this second hand cabinet was meant to be easy, but I can’t get the colour right. I’m about to paint it a third time 🫣🫣🫣
8: I had the pleasure of attending the AW25 madedotcom press show yesterday. So many lovely bits that I’ll post on stories this week. *ad pr event
9: visiting Brighton to see dad play a gig on the beach at the start of summer
10: my favourite pale pink dahlias in a fab homesense_ukie plant pot I picked up recently.

AD. You may remember that when I painted my front door last year, I wasn’t that enamoured by the colour. It was always my plan to change it this summer (it had also accumulated quite a few cracks in that time!) so when I discovered that grahamandbrown offered an exterior eggshell paint in a wide range of colours, I ordered a few peel and stick samples before picking out Turmeric (an exciting yellow hue) for a quick and simple change up to the front of our house.

So many of you said last time that I should paint my door yellow, so I took your advice! I love how this rich yellow tone is vibrant and welcoming, and it pairs well with the blue of the entranceway.

With high summer being the best time to complete those nagging exterior paint jobs before the season changes, head to the Graham & Brown website to find your perfect exterior paint shade.

I saw this ‘a woman’s touch vs a man’s’ social media trend and I couldn’t resist having a go purely because of the story of that the Grand Slam wrestling chair has been quite the joke in our family for some time.

I always bring back home decor for the house on my travels, but I couldn’t believe it when my husband brought back a souvenir ringside chair from when he went to watch a wrestling match in NYC. He went out and bought a giant flight bag and paid for extra luggage to bring that back to sit around our dining table 😂😂😂😂 Honestly, my face when he unzipped that bag 😬.

The arcade machine he had custom built. It has every arcade game on it from the 80s and every delivery guy or male partner of a friend of mine that comes round absolutely loves it.

[My husband is working away in Australia for a month, so I’m hoping he doesn’t see this reel, and if he does, I’m hoping he will have forgotten about it by the time he returns 😆🙈🤐]

Hello, August! I’ve realised that this is the last month of summer. It feels like we’ve had a long summer this year because the weather’s been so good, so here’s a tour of my home decor and a few things that I’ll miss doing at home when it turns to autumn. We don’t really eat outside much, but I will miss those garden flower cuttings. I always have flowers in the house so it saves me a fortune in the summer months 😂.

Will you miss summer, or are you ready for cosy season?

⭐️ NEW in the bathroom 🛁 The sash window in our bathroom has a new window treatment: a cafe curtain made from a patterned sheer fabric from imogenheathinteriors

When I decorated this bathroom yonks ago and removed the old Venetian blinds, I always intended to have a sheer fabric up here, but I just couldn’t find anything that wasn’t a plain design. When I visited the last Decorex interior show, I found this beautiful cotton sheer fabric, woven in the UK, so I purchased some and had my local curtain maker whip up a cafe curtain.

I really like how the design complements the wiggle wallpaper and it’s made this room a lot brighter now (the DIY fabric curtains I had up before were annoying because they had to be closed and opened constantly to let the light in).

I am thinking of adding a relaxed roman blind to the top of the window as well, just to dress it a bit more, but I love how the light is diffused through this sheer on a sunny summer evening.

How to wrap flowers in brown paper 🌸🌸
I made a load of these casual bouquets wrapped in brown kraft paper last week as teacher gifts and quite a few of you asked me for a demo to make your own. I’m going to hold my hands up and say that this might not be the best way to wrap flowers with brown paper, but this is what I find works for me!

Firstly, choose your flowers . You can use supermarket flowers, or flowers from the flower market. To keep costs down even more, try adding a few bits from your garden if you have one. I make a small posy with a 70% flower to 30% foliage ratio. Once I’m happy with my arrangement, I secure them together with a bit of string or twine before wrapping them in the paper left to right and securing with Sellotape. I then add a bit of ribbon with dovetail ends if I’m giving it as a gift!

This can be a super affordable way to make a bouquet for friends, teachers or neighbours without buying formal ones from a florist.

Save for later and let me know if you have any questions!

I’ve had a recent flurry of requests in my DM’s for the names of the paint colours I’ve used in my home. As I’ve also decorated a bit since I last did one of these posts, I thought I’d do a round up all the wall colours and wallpapers I’ve used throughout the house.

Looking at these pictures, I can see I’m definitely a fan of the reds, pinks, blues and sandy browns to paint my walls in! There’s a couple of new projects on the cards as well, starting with a repaint of the front door. I gave it a freshen up at the end of last year, but the colour (although lovely) just doesn’t give me a happy hug when I get home. I’ve got the new tin already sitting in the hallway of the new colour, so let me know in the comments if you’ve got a guess to what it might be!

Have a lovely Saturday everyone xxx

Good morning! Just posting a couple of stills this morning as this is the most hectic week with it being the last week of term. I’m up to my eyeballs trying to sort out teacher gifts and tie up work. I’m also an emotional wreck as my son leaves his primary school this week and it feels very overwhelming 😭😭😭.

Anyhow, I’m really pleased that I brought a pop of pink into this sitting room. I think the pink ties into the wall colour nicer than the previous red chairs. I need to source a vintage cabinet for the other alcove of the room as it’s an empty space now, so my poor son will be dragged around the antique and house clearance shops the first week of school break to find something suitable 😂

Have a lovely Tuesday xx

AD. NEWNESS FROM dunelmuk !!

I was so excited this week to go to the Dunelm AW25 & Christmas showcase to take a look at their latest products, new textiles and extensive Made to Measure service. I love Dunelm, as they are always up-to-date with the latest interior trends, plus they offer great quality for a good price.

My favourite finds included colourful glossy tables, chairs featuring a high-quality woven fabric, striped made-to-measure curtains and blinds, a luxury bed with built-in reading lights, marble console tables, wiggle and polka dot chairs and seasonal animal vases. All of these pieces across each collection could be mixed, matched and styled together for a stylish and unique home decor scheme.

The good news is that some of these products are already online now on the Dunelm website, so you don’t need to wait until the autumn!

I even had a little sneak peek at what’s coming for (whisper it) Christmas. Think colour, bows, trims and tassels for living areas, with traditional colours and tones for bedding.

Is there any piece that stands out to you from the reel? Let me know what piques your interest in the comments!

Our Georgian Home In The Summer ☀️☀️☀️

Good morning! It’s going to be another hot and sunny day, so I thought I’d share a few captures of our period home in recent weeks with the sun streaming in. I’ve loved the sunlight beaming in through the sash windows. Long may it last!

This warmer weather has also been good for the hydrangeas. I’ve never had such a bumper crop. A lot of you were concerned for them after my story yesterday with the tree falling down, but they bounced back with a bit of watering!

I’m off into London today to work with one of my favourite brands so it should be a good one. I can’t believe the schools break up next week though, where has the time gone! 😱

This week, we signed off the final floor plan, layout and design of our kitchen extension and renovation with our architect, so I thought I’d share some of the parts of the design that I am really excited about from the architect drawings. To be honest, I am absolutely made up that she has managed to include all these things that I have always desperately wanted. I didn’t actually think we’d have enough space for most of these, even with extending, as our period home has a funny layout and we can only extend so much out the back, but she’s managed to include everything I have ever wanted including a pantry, a designated room for the utility, plus banquette seating. Alongside the drawings, I’ve included a few inspo pics of the type of look that we are going for. The exterior design is also completed, but we need to fine-tune the design of the doors and windows, so I’ll share those when they are ready.

Have a good Friday, everyone I can’t believe it’s the end of the week already !

I have a part shade garden, so I’ve always grown a lot of hydrangea plants as they grow well out of direct heat and they give me huge flowers throughout the summer. Over the years, I’ve picked up a few tips when cutting them to display inside the house. They can be prone to wilting quite easily, so you need to do a few things to make sure that they can suck up as much water as possible from the vase.

I always cut the biggest heads with the thickest stems because they are the most robust. I then trim the stems at a 45° angle and make a small incision upwards, as this allows the stem obtain a decent amount of liquid. I place the cut stems instantly in water to keep them hydrated and then I’ll leave them in a dark, cool area of my house to recover from the shock of being cut. Once displayed, as long as you keep them out of direct sunlight, they should last five days!

Even if you don’t grow your own hydrangeas, these are good tips to follow when you buy hydrangeas either at the flower market, or from a florist.

I don’t declare myself to be a gardening expert, but this is what has worked for me. If you have any other tips, leave them in the comment section!

Ad/press event* 🌸🌺 The hottest, sweatiest, blinded by the sun day ever at the the_rhs rhshampton_showteam Hampton Court Flower Show, but what a treat for the eyes it was. I had a great day out with _jesshurrell taking in the gorgeous show gardens, looking through the floral marquee (where you can buy plants to take home, one of my fave things about Hampton Court; I found a pale pink lavender in there that I’m obsessed with), plus inspiring stands and innovative products that I’d never heard of before, like akt_ldn , an independent deodorant brand designed by former actors to be applied all over the body. Their stand was so fun with a dressing room and full on tablescape display. I also loved thepottingshedpub stand styling and The Three Graces Of Galicia show garden and of course david_austin_roses . The flower show is on all this week (hopefully when it’s a bit cooler) and I highly recommend it!!!

THIS WEEK IN PICTURES 📸

I have so many snaps in my phone from this week, mostly because I started the week off in Ibiza!

1-5: We stayed at cubanitoibiza and partied at 528ibiza.
6-7: I’ve spent my Ibiza recovery time glued to Glastonbury, so here’s a couple of photos saved from last year when I went to support my husband when he played the second stage. Absolutely loved Four Tet and En Vogue from the from the TV coverage this year.
8-9: A new look for the sitting room that I’m loving with all the lighter colours. I created this faux floral mantle for the reel which was so fun to do. I’ll share the ‘step by step’ video on making it next week.
10: A sweaty and hot trip to Legoland to treat our boy after his dad was away on tour for a month then mum popped off to Ibiza 😂. He’s obsessed with the 4D Lego cinema there.
11: All my garden hydrangeas bloomed this week in a multitude of colours, although it’s hard to stop them wilting in this heat 🥵. Thanks to my husband’s jet lag he was up at 4am giving them a good water to set them up each day.
12: Final Ibiza shots because why not? From sunset boat trips and dancing at DC10, to frozen daiquiris and checkered swimming pools.

I hope you’ve all had a lovely (hot) week!
