A few gems from “The Monday Media Diet with Melanie Dunea” which dropped today.

“Media consumption is the only area in my life where I am *not* on a diet.”

“Riding on buses make me barf.”

“I hide self-help books on my Kindle that I dip into such as ‘Atomic Habits’, ‘Backable’, or books on topics like to get rid of cellulite, drink less, chill out, reduce inflammation, etc., etc.”

“The endless demand to download apps annoys me.”

“I grew up with no TV because my mother thought they were ‘vulgar’.”

“Thanks to Ann Patchett’s Parnassus First Editions Book of the Month club, I am never at a loss for a great novel.” parnassusbooks

Happy Photography Day from the darkroom. 📸

Little did I know how much photography would change over the course of my career.

Sure it has been a challenge to pivot from developing in a wet darkroom, to learning digital, to continuing to adapt to all the new technology.

But guess what? I am here for it 🙏🏻😘💪🏼📸.

Fishing in Central Park? Yes, you can!

I recently saw some NYC fishing firsthand during a photoshoot with Dr. Brandon Dale, the founder of “Carp in the Park.”

Added bonus for me Brandon often fishes right next to the Central Park Boathouse restaurant, where I decided to pop in after the shoot for a snack.

And no, I did not order fish.

*That* was a cool NYC moment. 2025-08-19 19:09:31 Fishing in Central Pa.. 0 - 21 +30%

Pasta with a side of art! 🥂

This recipe was dreamed up by the brilliant food icons clarkbar and GailSimmonseats, who were inspired by the sexy, saucy ingredients in my new photo book Amuse-Bouche.

The book is designed to look like a restaurant menu and it toys with the intersection of food, fashion, and art through my painting and photography.

Cooking together was the perfect reminder that food is communal, aesthetic, and belongs to all of us.

Experience this sensual, temporal, organic limited-edition photography vignette available in Pink and Rouge.

This is the smile of a dream realized.

Over 30 years ago, I met Jo Horgan, a vivacious Australian with a “joie de vivre” and an adventurous spirit. Even while she was in a Boston business school, she was my perfect muse, always making time to strike a pose for my camera. You could tell even then by her “elbows out” grit and determination that she was a rockstar in the making.

Today, after 28 years of unstoppable focus and hard work, Jo Horgan is opening the world’s largest freestanding beauty playground meccabeauty, dare I say, a true Mecca! This gorgeous 40,000-square-foot space is full of flowers, potions, lotions, basically everything fabulous in the beauty and wellness world.

I confess, before there was one store (not the 120+ there are today), I was the only one who voted against naming the business “Mecca.” Shows what I know meccacosmetica!!!

As Louis Pasteur said, “Luck favors the prepared mind,” but Jo’s journey is a testament that it also takes an immense amount of focus, determination, and hard work.

Congratulations, Jo! I’m so incredibly proud of you! I will also post this carousel of our lovely spontaneous shoot and not any throwback photos. You are welcome 😂.

I highly recommend jennybefine wwd beautyinc’s breaking news story highlighting the opening. Jenny has the delicious details and all the scoop. 😍 2025-08-07 22:36:41 .. 0 - 21 +30%
That cheeky smile hides the incredible mind of Charlotte Druckman—a truly one-of-a-kind thinker and writer.

She’s got this rare blend of smarts and charisma, always fair, and relentlessly curious.

I first met Charlotte in 2/ 2012 when she interviewed me for the Wall Street Journal about ice cream. (Yes, I have opinions. Surprised?)

Since that meeting, we’ve become much more than just acquaintances: collaborators, friends, and even adopted family. This isn’t a soft relationship, though. Charlotte gives me the kind of clear, direct feedback that’s rare to find, always with a heavy dose of mischief. I give it right back.

When I saw her critique of my latest work, Amuse-Bouche, I was floored. It was like she put into words exactly what I’d been trying to express with my work my entire life.

Do yourself a favor: subscribe to her Substack The Sweethearts that she co-authors with dishingdaily.

Some favorite passages follow but do read the whole story titled “
Of Fruit, Frippery, Art & Artifice”

“The images immediately catch the eye. Then, they get the mind working. Melanie meant them to be provocative, but she doesn’t tell us how to read them. They are here to amuse, arouse, and to start conversations. “

“Melanie told me she’s found it disappointing—and insulting—that people assume her work is the result of her relying on algorithmically informed tech. I don’t blame her. But I also think the timeliness of this series—its arrival simultaneous to our collective, sweeping preoccupation with AI—makes Amuse-Bouche feel somehow more important. Like it captures what we’ll look back on that moment when we could still discern a human-made work of art from a solely tech-produced one.”

“AI will “learn” from Melanie’s photos. It becomes “smarter” the more information it gets from us. From what I gather, it’s a homogenizing replica of average human intelligence. It’s already well on its way to making our historical narratives, our images, our art—and most dangerously, our thinking more uniform.

I hate this.”

Me too Char, me too. 🙏🏻 2025-07-16 23:37:01 .. 0 - 2 -88%
Chef _paulcarmichael and I met while he was helming the kitchen at Momofuku Seiobo in Sydney, Australia in 2019.

As airmail reported at the time: “Melanie Dunea, the globe-trotting photographer who makes an art of food—and vice versa—is wild for davidchang Momofuku Seiōbo, a Sydney restaurant known for its championing of local seafood. She loves the razor-clam ceviche with green tomato and choko, but didn’t say no when the Barbadian chef, Paul Carmichael, slipped her a taste of jerk-seasoned Wagyu beef.”

We did a very informal set of photos with no lights or plan, so relaxed I actually brought my Uncle David to hang out and help me carry my camera bags.

I was very taken with chef Carmichael’s excellent food, lovely demeanor and unapologetic ethos.

When I read ligayamishan’s three star ⭐️⭐️⭐️nytimes restaurant review today of kabawa I was ecstatic.

In Lingaya’s words:

“The answer at Kabawa is to show it both as it is and as it can be, without apology or compromise. Not in defiance but in welcome, and with the understanding that none of this should be taken as definitive. It is Caribbean food filtered through one man’s memory and imagination. That is, Mr. Carmichael’s food.”

💪🏼 chef.

AI?

Nooooo way.

Watch this behind-the-scenes video from the Amuse-Bouche photoshoot and you’ll see we used real ingredients, to create all of the photographs.

This book, which isn’t really a book, is an exploration of the place where fashion + food + photography + art meet.

Why?

My vision was to explore these genres together which usually don’t overlap and intermingle.

Now that you are watching… seee?? I used no AI (obvious to me but not to others); rather, I dreamed up concepts and over two days, we shot them in a New York CIty photo studio.

You can only secure a copy of Amuse-Bouche directly from me (on my website, link in profile or DM me), hurry before these first-editions are all gone. 💋 2025-06-24 23:07:01 AI? Nooooo wa.. 0 - 6 -63%
Amuse-Bouche, my latest “book,” has arrived! 🐙

To create this piece, I was driven by the challenge of mixing fashion + food + photography + art — fields that often don’t overlap.

It took three years of toying with the myths, rules, realities of these separate disciplines and their strict boundaries. I pushed myself to feel free, open my mind, apply no preconceived rules and no compromises, which is in part why I also chose to self-publish this work.

As you page through, you see what looks like a Michelin-starred restaurant menu. Look closer — this isn’t a menu, it isn’t a fashion shoot or a food shoot. It is something different.

Go ahead and call it a book, a piece of art, an object. Any label or category works for me.

I used no AI (obvious to me but not to others); rather, I painted, shopped, dreamed, laughed, photographed, and wrote the entire collection by hand.

The core of this project is my invitation to ask questions, look twice, closer, laugh, and dream with me.

Each limited edition copy was hand-stitched, Swiss-bound, signed (yes, all my 6 names make an appearance), and numbered.

Although I self-published and you can only buy these directly from me (on my website or DM me), I didn’t work alone.

The fabulous cat.casalino designed the book with grace, humor, imagination, and patience.

Creative collaborator robertmolnarnyc is still questioning my every idea, while also bringing his sharp eye to and wit to each item of clothing.

So many other people were part of the shoot day: romillynewman elunken lindsayblockstyle jessibutterfield williamrmurphy alinalundry clickmodelny authorlynnmessina florencesicard uriahvladimir bethredmond steph.madoff.katz monicahenry reneerober rondraw syd_c_nyc louis.russo

So go ahead — put it on your coffee table, give it to a food, fashion, or art loving friend. I hope that it strikes up some good conversations. Just like My Last Supper did.

Pssst. Only 500 exist, in two colorways: Pinky and Rouge, 250 of each.

Spring is here Woo-hoo. 🌸

This must mean it’s time to shop your #newyorkinbloom scarf created by yours truly.

The backstory:

‘New York in Bloom’ was born out of the dark, empty days of the pandemic, a time when all my commissions were cancelled and no one could be, or wanted to be, photographed.

I stopped, stripped it all down and looked around. I photographed what I saw - empty streets. But also the overflowing flowers that colored those NYC streets. (Just like it is now. Spring!)

Then it hit me, what if I put these images together? And what if I went even further and made the images into silk scarves? Why? Why not!

I quickly taught myself Photoshop (I sure had the time!) and then turned to the brilliant robertmolnarnyc who knows all re: fashion and clothing design.

Boom! 3 months later I was selling the scarves. The profits for the sales kept the lights on for 6 months. How about that?!” 2025-04-24 22:48:31 Spring is here.. 0 - 0 -100%
When I asked chef Ruth Rogers what she’d want for her last meal for my book series mylastsupper, she didn’t hesitate: a slow-cooked tomato sauce.

Easy peasy, I thought but there was a hitch, for our photoshoot she wanted to be surrounded by her whole River Cafe team.

Yikes, I thought, photographing groups can be tough.

The shoot took place one sunshine filled morning at her legendary, gorgeous restaurant, The River Café therivercafelondon.

A long table was set for the team, the pasta was prepared and we started the shoot. It was fast and furious, delightful chaos.

Five minutes in, Ruth’s husband Richard walked in and joined the photograph.

His presence lightened, calmed and united the whole situation.

Suddenly this portrait became a celebration of community, legacy, and this one beautiful shared meal. 2025-04-21 23:06:46 When I asked chef .. 0 - 16 -1%
