That’s a wrap for Qualifying Week.

Am humbled to be the sole candidate on the ballot this Fall for the Post 2 Citywide seat on the Atlanta City Council.

Am committed to build on our work around affordable housing and homelessness, around greenspace and trails.

Am determined to make better progress on pouring sidewalks, protecting bike lanes, and paving streets. On investments against flooding from storms growing more frequent and intense. On allocating funding annually to provide every Atlanta toddler access to quality Early Childhood Education.

Am honored for the chance to continue our efforts to keep building toward an Atlanta where neighborhoods are vibrant, small businesses are thriving, where Downtown is a bustling commercial and residential center. An Atlanta where Hartsfield-Jackson (the economic engine of the Southeast) is on the cutting edge of air travel. An Atlanta that invests more in arts and culture.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out (matt@mattwestmoreland.com or on my cell at 404.408.0980) if I can ever help.

Thank you for your support, encouragement, and prayers as we continue to create a safe, affordable, and vibrant Atlanta for all who call this special place home! 2025-08-23 02:10:39 That’s a wrap for Qua.. 439 +166% 38 +564%

Tom Cousins transformed our City’s skyline, brought professional basketball and hockey to Atlanta, set us down the path of becoming a convention magnet, and founded a company that would become central to our civic fabric— and the largest owner of office space in town.

But I knew him best for his remarkable spirit of philanthropy. His founding of the East Lake Foundation and longtime partnership with neighborhood leader Eva Davis. His founding of Purpose Built Communities, revitalizing neighborhoods all across the country.

And his support of Purpose Built Schools Atlanta, with which APS partnered as part of our Turnaround Strategy, leading to this photo from his visit to Thomasville Heights Elementary School at the start of the 2016-2017 school year.

Five years ago next month, Council adopted Atlanta’s first-ever Economic Mobility Plan— to refocus our development efforts on the construction of affordable housing, creation of middle-wage jobs, support of small businesses, and community-focused neighborhood investments.

So when we open a City-funded grocery store… in a food desert… partnering with an organization founded and run by a woman of color… housed in a building owned by another woman of color… on the Sweet Auburn corridor… steps from the King Center…

Lovin’ every minute of these student visits to City Hall this week!

Really enjoyed hanging with collinsforatlanta (once a colleague on apsboe, now on atlcouncil) as we spent time talking with these apsupdate students from Mays, Washington, Maynard Jackson, Therrell, B.E.S.T., Douglass, Carver Early College, and North Atlanta high schools. 2025-07-18 17:27:16 Lovin’ every minute of .. 124 -25% 5 -13%
Such thoughtful and insightful questions and comments yesterday from these high schoolers taking part in oaklandcemetery’s Youth Landscape & Hardscape Team.

An eight-week, paid summer internship that combines a focus on workforce preparedness — including classes on financial literacy, resume writing, and communication skills — with learning landscaping and horticulture techniques plus preservation and masonry skills at Atlanta’s oldest park. 2025-07-15 17:53:28 Such thoughtful a.. 63 -62% 1 -83%

Earlier this term, andreforatlanta announced the City’s first-ever financial investment in Early Childhood Education.

It was part of a three-year, $20 million initiative in partnership with apsupdate and our philanthropic community to provide repair and renovation grants for child care facilities, professional development and retention bonuses for educators, and scholarships for our youngest residents.

Joined rashaunforgeorgia and folks from gaearlyed, paactatl and the reinvestfund at atltechcollege this morning to cut the ribbon on the College’s newly renovated Early Learning Center — one of 70 such renovations across the city.

Left feeling more convicted than ever to ensure the City and APS partner to provide significant annual funding to support our kids from Birth to PreK. That’s exactly how we make Atlanta the best place to raise a child. 2025-06-28 01:34:38 Earlier this term.. 45 -73% 0 -100%

Special, special day in the A— with the renaming of Shirley Clarke Franklin Boulevard and Shirley Clarke Franklin Park.

Not a stitch of Atlanta history — from 1972 to tomorrow — has happened without her helping mold it.

Not the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games that propelled this City on to a global stage

Not an overhauled sewer system that has enabled and supported our incredible growth.

Not a fifth runway and new international terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson that better connected our state’s largest employer — and the Southeast’s economic engine— with the rest of the world.

Not the 22-mile trail loop that is transforming Atlanta in front of our very eyes.

Spent much of yesterday thinking back to an overcast Saturday, May 19, 2001. Asked my Dad if our family could have dinner that night at the Old Spaghetti Factory so I could wander across Ponce— and check out the official headquarters opening of a certain candidate for Mayor of Atlanta.

That evening was the first time I met Shirley Franklin. And have been the beneficiary of a quarter century of her advice, counsel, mentorship and friendship.
