Every year, floods hit our area—but the world rarely hears about it. The people of Masantol and neighboring towns endure these disasters quietly, with strength, resilience, and the biggest hearts. You’ll always see a smile on a Masantoleño’s face, even when they’re standing in floodwaters or rebuilding their lives from scratch. They keep going, they help one another, and they never complain. But let’s not mistake those smiles for the absence of struggle.
Right now, many families have lost everything. Homes are underwater, children can’t go to school, and people are surviving without clean water, food, or dry clothes. Many were already living in poverty—and now, they’re facing even more loss.
If you know me, you know I rarely ever ask for help. But this is bigger than me. This is about a whole community that I hold dear to my heart- that has always shown up for each other—now needing someone to show up for them.

![Papa, what a legacy you have created. 7 kids, 16 grandkids, 16 great grandkids and counting. And we are all one big happy family together.
My grandpa celebrated his 95th birthday last week. His health has been diminishing these past few years after Mama passed away, so I knew I had to go visit him in the Philippines asap.
I showed up today unannounced and surprised him!
When I arrived, he was laying in bed and squeezed my hand to show me how strong he still was and he was even making jokes.
Less than 12 hours later, he passed away peacefully in his sleep. Thank you for waiting for me, Papa. 😢
Papa dropped out of grade school to work and help make ends meet.
He was eventually the first in the family to come to the USA in the 70s, sacrificing his life to earn $2/hr as a janitor at a bowling alley in the basement of a shopping mall. He even lived there in a small room in the bowling alley- leaving his entire family behind to create a better life for all to follow.
He started from scratch, laying the foundation brick by brick, ultimately giving me the ability to create something bigger. All while being the funniest, light hearted human I ever knew.
Papa, you are my hero. I love you. Pls give mama a big hug for us all. ❤️]()

![These 12 inch Filipino barber shears are widely used in street side barbershops throughout the Philippines. They almost feel like they are recycled from an old tin pot. During a previous visit, I bought these from a local shop as a souvenir to bring home and display on my work station. They are a great conversation piece- clients always ask me what in the world these things are! 😂
They were super dull, so I recently had mizutaniamerica meticulously sharpen and refine them. Now they scare me. 😅
I had to take them out for a spin on my Filipino brother anastaciiio that came to visit all the way from Santa Barbara, CA. Because guess what- he asked me what in the world they were while I was cutting his hair.

![Lester is a true man of faith. He has been coming to see me for a beard trim every 2 weeks for about 5 years. He was homeless living on the local train station for over 13 years. He has a very keen eye and loves sharp, clean lines on his beard- he used to work as an asphalt paving foreman before his health began to deteriorate.
Years ago, a social worker from the local hospital called my salon silvervineroom asking if I can help clean him up. Thanks to the social worker, he now lives a few towns away in a government subsidized apartment- about a 20 minute drive away. When I asked how he now gets to my salon for his appointment, he told me that it takes him 2 hours and 45 minutes by bus and train.
He left today’s appointment by saying, “I got you covered when this is over!” ❤️

You were the kindest and most unselfish genuine loving soul. A one of a kind human. Even in the midst of your valiant battle, you were always the first to ask how I'm doing and how my kids were. You always put others first.
When you met mannymakeshair, you transformed my best friend into a man- someone that I look up to. You guys didn't hesitate to fly across the world with me to my hometown in the Philippines. Being exposed to this for the first time can be overwhelming, but you dove right in, giving back to children and families living in poverty- in the dump sites, community centers, foster homes, rural villages in the middle of nowhere. I even had no idea where we were. Nothing phased you. (Maybe for a second when you thought you had lice in your hair... slide 5 😂)
All while unknowingly being pregnant with your first child. You ate so much rice while pregnant that you couldn't eat rice again for a very long time after giving birth to Leni. Welcome to the Philippines. 😬

I’m at my baby niece’s baptism and we all decide to rush my cousin’s coffee shop (stephcapili , cup.ily ) afterwards. There’s about 20 of us.
Steph has her hair up and it looked short. (Her hair has always been long.) I asked her to let her hair down so I can see. She refused with an embarrassed look on her face and told me she hacked away at it herself and she was refusing to let it down.
I told her I can try and fix it, but she needs to let me see it first. She let it down and the Auntie’s in the back were immediately like, “OMG you cut your hair! Who did that??”
Having a family full of hairdressers, I had no choice but to give her a bit of a hard time for doing this to herself! 😂

It’s truly humbling to be recognized among such an accomplished group of people, especially in a room full of leaders and trailblazers—Asian American lawyers and Judges who advocate for justice and equality every day. I may not work in law, but we are all connected by our commitment to making a positive impact in our communities.
As a hairstylist and philanthropist, my journey has been anything but traditional. The theme of this year’s gala, “Blooming in Adversity,” speaks to the heart of my story and to so many stories in our community. As Asian Americans, we often find ourselves navigating spaces where we are underrepresented, underestimated, or misunderstood. And yet, we thrive. We bloom.
In my case, hairstyling became not just a career but a way to connect with people on a deep level. It was a way to show people their beauty and strength, especially during times when they may not have felt either.
That’s why I’ve dedicated so much of my life to philanthropy, creating my own lane that uplifts communities around the world- to give a voice to those who are often unheard.
It’s important that we continue to lift each other up, to support one another, and to create spaces where our voices can be heard.
But most importantly, We must be kind to ourselves first and trust in the strength within us to effectively translate our purpose into society.
My mantra in life has always been- I’m either expensive or I’m free, but I’m never cheap. Break the barriers, bend some rules, keep it simple, but most importantly, be yourself.
Be effective in negotiating a compromise but don’t ever compromise your values under negotiation. Pick and choose your battles, do not be taken advantage of - do not let your kindness be taken for weakness- AKA don’t EVER take sh*t from anybody.

![OMG, Today is my 40th bday!!
I decided to celebrate life by spending my morning on the streets of NYC sharing the gift that gives me life. This summer marks 10 years since I began my journey of giving back to communities all around the world. The support you have all provided has given me the strength and drive to do more than I ever could have imagined for myself and more importantly, for others.
