5 months later and I’m still angry. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure & the lack of planning from the city is inexcusable. No pre-deployed additional fire trucks. A 170 million gallon reservoir that was empty & unusable for well over a year because of bureaucratic nonsense. Fire hydrants that were empty & unusable. An evacuation order & city officials that branded the residents who stayed behind & saved neighborhoods as a huge problem. Looters swarmed the area & one came onto my property and two neighbors had houses looted. My brother lost his house. My kids lost their school. Many friends lost homes, some lost offices, some people lost their lives. The amount of destruction & property damage is estimated to be over $150 billion in losses. Many people have had to relocate to try to rebuild their lives. There is debris & pollution that has to be cleaned up & will take years. The Palisades was founded over 100 years ago & never before in its history has a fire been so poorly managed. We need new leadership that actually focuses on the fundamentals of good governance & serves citizens, not special interests. Regardless, it is a complete mistake to fully rely on the government. Being in the middle of the fire zone it was incredibly clear that even with diverted resources from other states and municipalities, once the surface area of the fire really got raging, the brave fire fighters couldn’t possibly cover all the areas that needed help. Citizens need to be prepared. Our gas powered engine that had 300’ of hose and could pull from our pool was hugely valuable. Water pre-saturation of the yard, roof and vegetation was incredibly effective at preventing the fires from taking hold. Native plants were remarkably resistant. Our generator to give us power was invaluable and helped us coordinate with the neighbors to better support each other. The WhatsApp group my wife set up enabled us to save our neighborhood because we could coordinate once Starlinks were setup. Be prepared with gear, water, power, comms & support each other. Played golf with my dad and bother a couple of weeks ago and it was the great to be able to get together as everyone is busy and we don’t get as much time as we would all like to be together. My dad’s name is Rick, my brother’s name is Rick and my dad wanted to name me Eric (Rick with an E) but my mom vetoed it and named me Marc. Had a great action packed trip to the UK a couple of weeks ago where I was lucky enough to be able to bring Linken on another work trip. We got to see Faker win another incredible title at the O2 arena, got to visit some friends at Games Workshop (which is so fun to visit if you’re into 40K), enjoyed some incredible food in London and we surprised Dylan with a 50th birthday party. 🥳 I also got to meet rekkles for the first time which was super cool after all these years of cheering for him - wish we got a pic together! Has a blast playing in the SoCal Open from frontline.gaming in San Diego recently. The team format really adds a lot of depth to list building, team composition and the matchup selection process. Great friends, great event. We went undefeated and took 7th overall and over performed our expectations heading in due to the great teams of awesome players that were there. It was also an honor to get my tail whooped by Ben Jurek of team USA and I learned a lot from the game and his generous advice afterwards. First ever work trip I brought Linken on was amazing and will be full of memories. These pictures don’t do justice to the adventure, fun and various experiences we shared. We flew fully around the world in a bit over a week. LA to Amsterdam to Riyadh to Bangladesh to Shanghai and back to LA. He was a trooper. He was patient while sitting through some long business meetings, he was respectful of the different customs in the different places we visited, he navigated several days in a row of little sleep, and he kept up with a fast pace of dense activities with very little complaining. Proud of him - we had a wonderful time, we both learned a lot and we will both remember these experiences forever - in particular our trip to Saudi Arabia where we learned a lot and bonded with new friends over a shared love of online games, in particular League of Legends. Shanghai was also wonderful as I hadn’t been out to see our China team in years and the first Valorant Masters event ever in China went smashingly. Also, it was great to hang with our friends at Mihoyo to share knowledge and appreciation for their great work. Massive rainfalls in LA caused a mudslide that started flooding our dining room and basement. Got the outdoor gear on, grabbed shovels, called friends and neighbors and people showed up to help. The fire department showed up and said they didn’t have the capacity to help but made some good recommendations. We filled sandbags and dug water flow channels in the mud for hours and were able to put wood planks in front of the windows to help reduce the building pressure from the mud. We called it around midnight, and were hoping that the work would be enough to get us through the night in time to reassess in the morning and hopefully get professional help. Come morning time, the work held up! Garden got smashed, but compared to the alternatives, we’ll take it. Super #grateful to everyone who came and hope everyone stays safe in these crazy conditions. Yesterday, we celebrated the official grand opening of the SoLa Impact Technology and Entrepreneurship Center Powered by Riot Games. The center includes incredible facilities like a PC Bang, a 5v5 competitive setup stage, music studios, robotics and computer labs, and more. When we started having conversations with the team at SoLa this place was just an empty warehouse - to see it come to life now is a bit of a dream come true. Our goal is to have over 1,000+ students go through SoLa’s programming annually and provide them with the exposure and resources that can help shape their futures and provide opportunities that otherwise would not be possible. I’m excited for the future of this center and for Rioters to have the chance to share their expertise and knowledge with these kids in hopes of building the next generation of game developers, shoutcasters, engineers, artists, esports athletes and more! I love that my daughter has been learning about basic economics in 2nd grade. Such fundamental and important concepts about how humans actually behave (vs what they say) and how markets work. She has already developed a conceptual understanding of these principals and has been coming up with ideas about what people want/need. Such an empowering framing as she is now imagining solutions for how she can meet peoples needs.
