I will always treasure visiting my grandmother’s home state of Michoacán during Día de Muertos. As a little girl, she would always tell me how magical it was and I feel so lucky to have finally experienced it. Here’s a look back at my personal altar from two years ago where I chose to honor my Tito Santiago, since I could not attend his funeral. My Tito played a huge role in inspiring me to learn more about my culture and understanding how important it is to continue honoring tradition. He was 95 (one month shy of turning 96!) when he passed away, but he was always busy. During his final moments, my sister told me he was telling family he had an errand he needed to do. One time he even rushed me off the phone. He said, “Okay, Luisina, ya me tengo que ir. Tengo muchas cosas que hacer.” Which translates to “Okay, Luisa, I need to go. I have lots of things to do.” I loved him so much and will continue to tell his story for all the future generations of our family. RECIPE FOR PAN DE ÁNIMAS (Day of the Dead bread from Michoacán) saveurmag — In my new book “Mexico’s Day of the Dead,” I explore the diversity of pan de muerto and what each style means to the specific region. One of my favorite styles comes from my grandmother’s home state of Michoacán and is known as pan de ánimas (bread of the souls).
