God forbid a girl has a hobby which sometimes involves jumping on trends (thanks for the inspo alexteri!)

Maaaaaaybe I’ll become a fashion blogger. I joke, I joke. I’m definitely not cool enough.

💍 My carolina_bucci x artofwishes bracelets for makeawishuk
💚 Feijoas goodies (sanza.co.uk is my usual Feijoa sweet supplier)

ft Spring sunshine, English Royalty & Puss in Boots wearing drag boots…

Only a 1hr 10min from Victoria Station, Lewes - a hilltop town nestled in the South Downs (raising the question can you nestle in a hill? Perch perhaps?) is a picturesque medley of royal history, antique shopping, sunny pubs and bakeries - not to mention a delicious all vegan Korean cafe (cafevegu) well worth a wandering weekend visit.

Coffees in hand we boarded, hoping for South Downs sunshine which we were lucky enough to have in spades. Thought gifted a house there, Anne of Cleves, almost Queen of England (luckily her marriage to Henry VII was annulled) never actually lived there which was an absolute shame - from the disco number in Six the Musical, I can’t help but think she would have loved brunching & bookshop browsing there of a Saturday…

Have you been?

What a year. It started inauspiciously with a distressed call about Smidgen needing the emergency vet whilst we were in New Zealand (she was eventually fine), and honestly went downhill from there including losing family (why do we use that phrase) and all kinds of chaos.

But, the surprise joy of looking back at the year shows there have also been highlights - clinking many glasses, much laughter, a Greek island hen do, weddings, hanging with Princesses, chocolate fondues, beach sunshine, immersing in NZ history in Northern France, a small kitty - and love, so much love. 🥰

2024 you can get in the bin, but cheers to a brighter 2025 and much joy to all. ✨

Are you a ‘New Year New Me’ or a ‘Same Me, Probably Some New Goals’ kinda person?

AD • If I can recommend anything at the end of this long, hard year, it’s taking off some time to relax with a friend over a lovely afternoon tea, catch a movie and then explore the twinkling Christmas lights lighting up London.

It’s been an age since I’ve been to the 5-star sterminshotel (I did an urban beekeeping course on their terrace and delight in showing friends their Bee & Bee Hotel) and it felt like such a guilty pleasure to natter over a glass of champagne and warm scones, simply stopping time.

It was a lovely afternoon tea in a gorgeous room - with a stand filled with Christmas classics. A surprise for me was their ‘mango mocktail’ tea which I couldn’t resist enjoying all the way to the end of the tea pot.

Then we slipped to the cinema (Moana 2 which made me both nostalgic and a touch homesick) before exploring the incredible array of festive lights and Christmas trees - which filled my London heart right up.

You just can’t beat the magic of a Christmas afternoon tea 💚 2024-12-12 02:05:38 AD • I.. 120 +1% 2 -86%
24 hours in Lille • It’s been years since I’ve explored Lille, so before we returned to London on the Eurostar (after visiting te_arawhata_nzlm) we decided to spend a night there.

Only 1.5 hours from London (and 45 minutes to Le Quesnoy) Lille is a fascinating city - church spires woven amongst European shops, the busy hubbub of the main square leading to tiny cobbled alleyways with barely a person around.

Over a beer or two we discovered that the Lille Cathedral had an incredible light show on the inside across the walls & roof, so we hot footed it there. What a breathtaking array!

One place we delighted in discovering was a ridiculously delicious bakery called the_french_bastards; so named for the nickname the owner was given whilst living in Australia 😄

And thank you for all the recommendations jacob_siermans!

It was such a great city break - though my suitcase returned to London a little fuller than I intended…

AD • It’s taken me quite some time to process the depth of emotion around visiting te_arawhata_nzlm, the New Zealand Liberation museum. It’s a deep, moving experience that I’ll honestly never forget.

Located in le.quesnoy (close to Lille) it’s exquisitely curated - with installations and exhibits by wetaworkshop - storytelling of evocative history, telling this story of a town captured by Germans, freed by New Zealand soldiers.

Immersive sound installations sharing the actual words of townspeople and soldiers, a gorgeously crafted ladder, changing exhibitions - currently focussed on rugby, and a thought provoking figure looking pensively whilst strewn with flowers bestowed by locals straight from hedgerows.

Did you know that 10% of the New Zealand population volunteered or enlisted to fight in the World Wars? This included a swathe of my family - and my friend’s Grandad whose name we found on the Roll of Honour.

When we think of military commemoration, our thoughts turn to the horrors of Gallipoli especially, but Le Quesnoy deserves its place in our memories.

He aha te mea nui? Māku e kii atu. He tangata, he tangata he tangata. What is the most important thing? It is people, it is people, it is people.

#AD Come with me to a slice of New Zealand history in the Northern French Countryside. On the 4th of November, Le Quesnoy was liberated by New Zealand soldiers from their German occupiers.

A quick Eurostar from London to Lille (1.5hrs) plus a local train (45mins) le.quesnoy is a fascinating place to explore - not least due to te_arawhata_nzlm, the only NZ museum outside of Aotearoa which opened about a year ago.

I’ll talk more about Te Arawhata in a following Reel & blog post, but exploring the 17km of medieval ramparts (highly recommend the guided tour - you’ll literally be transported to NZ) and learning about the incredible story of bravery (and orchard ladder borrowing) is quite incredible. It’s living history - with delicious boulangerie 🥖

Intrigued?

At its heart, hāngī is a delicious meal shared with friends and whanau (family) but in its soul, it’s a coming together of aroha (love.)

Once a year ngatiranana lure a host of Kiwis into the Guildford countryside for the laying of a smoky, scrumptious meal - Hāngī is a traditional New Zealand Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven, called an umu.

Common foods cooked in a hāngī are meats such as lamb, pork, chicken and seafood (kaimoana), and vegetables such as potato, kūmara (sweet potato), yams (oca), pumpkin, squash, taro and cabbage - if you’ve followed my blog or Instagram for awhile you’ll remember how much I adore this feast - laboured over for hours.

But what I love most of all? The sense of community found all the way over on the other side of the world to Aotearoa 💕

🎉 This year I’m celebrating* my 7th fulltime running my own business/self-employment anniversary**.

Time has absolutely flown by, and I can’t believe that I’m (literally) cutting cake on this anniversary!? 🥂

I’ve worked with some amazing people and places - some from the very beginning of this self-employed journey - and I just love working as a social media consultant. No two days are ever the same - and I’m enjoying it so much that I’m a year into a digital marketing degree, linking theory to all of the practical experience over the years. 💕

Over this time I’m proud to have supported incredible international brands & charities who are making a difference in the world, and a variety of retail and service-based businesses with amazing teams who are a joy to work with. 🌍

Creating content is also so much fun: this year alone I’ve ended up in the NZ High Commission (not *for* them to be clear) filming trending videos, met royalty, supported events at some incredible locations like the Savoy Hotel, told many terrible jokes, managed to sneak the cat onto each client account I’ve worked on so far (bar one) and worked with some absolutely amazing people. 📷

Thank you all! 🎉

* A wise friend (candidsbyjo) told me off for not celebrating business milestones, so here I am, cake ordered***.
** 7 fulltime freelance years, 1 year freelance whilst working a ‘normal’ job - how do you think I should count it?

Did you know you can drink *in* the Thames? This (actual 😉) hidden gem is a pub that has a terrace that regularly gets flooded by the Thames.

Before high tide (the tide times are noted on a board) locals just order a double round and food before jumping ON the tables for a merry half an hour.

Puzzled tourists laugh with delight as the water rises, whilst the prepared staff just splash around in their wellies 😂 It’s such a fun way to experience local London life.

Did you know this existed? The expat in my heart delights endlessly in things like this!

As we watched the turquoise waters dapple in the sunshine before we dove in for a deliciously refreshing swim, my thoughts turned to… nothing deep and meaningful.

All I could think about was how delicious the margarita in my hand was, how warm the sun felt and the joy in the laughter of my mates on the boat.

That’s the joy of a well earned break - this Monday all I can think of is where to next!

How is this even real!? Mr Kiwi just happened to read a BBC news article as we were going to bed about the Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights) potentially being seen over London skies last night.

Of course excitedly I dash into our garden just in case - in the typical stargazers outfit of pyjamas, phone in hand - hoping against hope that we see something, anything, only to be greeted in with this incredible display.

We were treated to nearly 50-minutes of shimmering, dancing ribbons of light. They *were* visible to the naked eye, but these photos were taken just with my iPhone - no fancy settings (just the technology in my 15 pro max) showing their full ethereal beauty.

We travelled to Northern Norway a few years ago in the hopes of seeing them, never thinking all I’d have to do is wander into my own garden, accompanied by a bemused cat.

Simply breathtaking ✨

Did you see them? They may be up again tonight - apparently there are geomagnetic storms. 12-hours later, Facebook is now lighting up with pictures from New Zealand of the Aurora Australis, Southern Lights.

Ps. These photos are straight off my phone, no colour editing. Phenomenal

New York, New York, so good they named it twice - and we love it so much that we visited twice in the same trip last year.

And what a music filled trip it was; from Broadway to Elvis’ home in Memphis, from the incredible live music of Nashville to the funk of Philadelphia - we adored it all.

But we simply had to bookend our trip with one of our favourite cities; visiting old haunts like katzsdeli and discovering new brunch hot spots with urbanpixxels who happened to be visiting from her home in the Netherlands - every moment was magical.

What is (or would be) your favourite thing to do in the city that never sleeps?

Hi [Social Media Manager] Barbie…

I was the kinda kid who had Barbies, but was too busy designing houses & sewing outfits for my Barbies to actually play with them. I so clearly remember using our heavy dining room chairs to make multi roomed mansions, and sitting with my nana to make a scaled red coat with a lace trim and matching ribbon straps to tie them around my Barbie’s shoulders - with neatly invisible stitches.

Isn’t it funny.

I insisted on getting this photo a few months ago, queueing in our local cinema with every young girl who walked through with her parents. Barbie has had an incredible array of careers - which Margot Robbie has pointed out started in a time where women had no financial rights or autonomy, and she has remained child free in contrast to many of the other dolls that were available. Equally, her body is very much rooted in the patriarchy & is unattainably proportioned - something to think about.

I’m intrigued to see this movie - will it live up to the most amazing marketing campaign probably ever? Have you seen it yet?
