Sofia isn’t just one of my favourite hidden gem European cities, it’s also one of the most underrated foodie destinations! 🇧🇬 Every time I visit Sofia I discover so many new and amazing places to eat 🤤 After at least 4-5 visits, here are some of my absolute faves…

🍆 Aubergine aubergine.sofia - a local hidden gem with fantastic craft food and craft beers to pair with every dish. Try the baked aubergine!

🇧🇬 Hadjidraganov’s Cellars hadjidragan - traditional Bulgarian tavern-style restaurant (the type you find in small towns but not the city) serving delicious local dishes! A meat-lovers dream.

🍴 Moma Bulgarian Food restaurant_moma_sofia - elegant and modern Bulgarian restaurant with varied dishes from around the country. A little more expensive than elsewhere but the courtyard is great for a special meal.

🍩 Мекица и Кафе (Makitsa & Coffee) mekitsa_ - the best place in the city for freshly made makitsa, a traditional Bulgarian fried dough. A range of toppings to pick from but I love jam and sirene (white cheese).

☕️ Doppio doppio.tiramisu - lovely little cafe that serves the BEST tiramisu I’ve ever eaten outside of Italy. V friendly owner. Often sells out by mid-afternoon.

🇮🇹 Osteria Tartufo tartufo.sofia - elegant Italian restaurant in a beautiful hidden courtyard just off the main street. Great salads, pasta, and Italian wines.

🍷 Wine Generator wine.generator - great place to try local Bulgarian wines!

☕️ Urban Embassy urban.embassy - amazing specialty coffee. Takeaway coffee served in sustainable edible cups (why doesn’t everyone do this!?)

Any other I need to try?

Another birthday well spent sipping fantastic Macedonian wines in a beautiful vineyard in a new country with good friends. Loving this new birthday tradition! 🍷

📍 S&S Winery, Ohrid, Macedonia 🇲🇰

💰 We paid €30 pp for a short winery tour, 5 good sized glasses of wine, 3 rakija/liquors, and 2 huge platters of meats, cheeses, bread and other treats! Options with extra wines and a pairing dinner are also available.

Some highlights from a hidden gem in Europe and one of my new favourite places on earth… the beautiful Lake Ohrid, Macedonia 🇲🇰🤍✨

🧱 Wander the UNESCO-listed Old Town – Ohrid is believed to be one of the oldest human settlements in Europe. Just be prepared for cobbled streets and steep hills.

🍽️ Eat by the lake – there are countless gorgeous restaurants with peaceful waterfront views, delicious food, and super affordable prices. Some of my faves are Restaurant Kajche, Kadmo Lounge, and Restaurant Chun.

🏰 Climb Samuel’s Fortress – panoramic views over the lake and rooftops of Ohrid.

🍹 Hang out at Cuba Libre Beach Bar cubalibrebeach – one of best places to relax in the sun around the lake. There’s cocktails, DJs, and a laid-back beach vibe right on the water. No minimum spend for sunbeds.

⛵ Take a boat trip – a full day boat trip takes you around the lake, including stops at the Bay of Bones (museum and historic site) and Saint Naum Monastery. Costs €25 pp.

🛶 Go paddle boarding – we rented a SUP board from kayak_sup_rental.

🍷 Go wine tasting – try Macedonian wines paired with delicious dishes at the lovely ss_winery, we did this for my birthday and it was one of my fave experiences in Ohrid!

🚴‍♀️ Cycle the lakeshore – hire bikes from bikestationohrid and cycle along scenic paths to nearby beaches, or head north to visit the neighbouring town of Struga.

🏖️ Relax on the beach – there are plenty of pebble beaches around the lake where you can sunbathe, swim, and relax.

⛪ Visit Naum Monastery & Church of St. John at Kaneo – two centuries-old churches with epic views.

🐠 Go on a semi-submarine tour – a fun novelty activity. Not a huge amount to see underwater near the town but worth doing for just €7 for an hour trip.

🌅 Take a sunset cruise – golden hour over the lake = pure magic. boatarmada run a 2-hour sunset cruise every evening from the port which costs just €10 and includes a glass of sparkling wine. A must-do!

Another incredible year of travelling around the world and living the nomadic dream ✈️🌎 🤍

Started the year in Asia exploring ancient ruins and relaxing on the beaches of Indonesia 🇮🇩 and Cambodia 🇰🇭, popped through Abu Dhabi 🇦🇪 and Turkey 🇹🇷 on the way back to Europe where we spent the summer in Spain 🇪🇸, Albania 🇦🇱 and Bulgaria 🇧🇬, before passing through Canada 🇨🇦 on the way to spend three entire months exploring Mexico 🇲🇽

This stunning cliff top villa in Huatulco has to be one of the nicest places I’ve ever stayed as a nomad… stylish tropical interiors, huge comfy beds, infinity pool overlooking the ocean, semi private beach… what more could you need!?

How much mezcal is too much mezcal!? 🇲🇽🇲🇽

Had the best day exploring the beautiful agave fields around Oaxaca and trying 13057427 different mezcals at elreydematatlan 🥃 Although, I’m not sure whose idea it was to give us machetes while drinking 😂😂

🚘 El Rey de Matatlan is located around a 30 minute drive outside of central Oaxaca city and it’s possible to visit using local public bus.

💰 This entire 2-3 hour experience cost just 250 peso (£10) per person and included a full tour of the agave fields and factory, a beer, a mezcal cocktail, and tastings of around 20 mezcals! Amazing value for money 😄

Spent a beautiful day soaking and exploring at Hierve el Agua in Oaxaca, one of the few petrified waterfalls in the world 🇲🇽🤍

This unique set of petrified waterfalls were formed over thousands of years by calcium and mineral-rich water trickling down the cliffs. Now they’re a popular tourist attraction with gorgeous mountain views and several natural infinity pools you can soak in.

Everything you need to know about visiting:

🧭 Hierve el Agua is located around a 1hr30 dive from Oaxaca city, and you can reach it by either renting a car, booking a taxi/private driver, taking a local bus (takes longer), or joining a tour.

🚘 We hired a car from Nuu Kava Rental in Oaxaca for $900 pesos (£35) for one day, including insurance. The road to the falls is windy and bumpy at parts, so it’s best to be an experienced and confident driver.

🕰️ We left Oaxaca City at 8:15am and arrived by 9:45am. While there were definitely people around, it wasn’t too busy at this point. But it did get very busy by late morning! If you want to experience the falls at their quietest, you’ll want to arrive around 8-9am.

💰 To visit, you’ll need to pay $25 peso (£1) entrance per person to the park area and another $50 peso (£2) entrance to the falls.

💧 Make sure you bring swimwear so you can take a soak in the natural and artificial pools at the top of the falls. There are toilets, showers, and changing rooms right by the pools.

🌳 You can hike from the cliff top down to the base of the falls which takes around 1 hour round trip. It’s best to do this first thing in the morning as it can get extremely hot in the middle of the days. Make sure to bring good shoes and plenty of water if you do want to hike!

Is there anything else you’d like to know about visiting Hierve el Agua?

Did you know that during the Day of the Dead celebrations in Oaxaca, families gather in cemeteries to honor their loved ones, decorating graves with vibrant marigolds, candles, and offerings of food, drinks, and personal mementos?

All night, there’s music, laughter, and the scent of incense filling the air as families connect with the spirits who return to be with them.

Tourists are welcome to visit the cemeteries to see the amazing celebrations, as long as you’re respectful to the local families. Many locals will even offer you a shot of mezcal if you say hi.

Two of the cemeteries we visited were:
- Atzompa (more local experience)
- Xoxo (bigger and busier with a concert outside)

👻 Watch until the end to see some actual spirits! 👻

🇲🇽 The Parade of Monumental Alebrijes is an annual event in Mexico City in which giant papier-mâché statues of Alebrijes - colourful and quirky spirit animals from Mexican folk art - are parade through the city streets before being displayed for the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities.

Local schools, youth groups, bands, and dance troupes join in the massive local celebration, which makes its way down the main road of Paseo Reforma for hours!

Cruising along the Mexican canals in a colourful boat with tequila, mariachi music, and this awesome group of humans was such a bucket list moment and one of the things that has made me absolutely fall in love with Mexico City! 🤍

📍 Xochimilco, Mexico City 🇲🇽

💰 Boats cost 750 peso (£29) per hour, no matter how many people you have (up to 20 people), so the bigger group you can get together, the cheaper it is per person! We did 4 hours and it was a good amount of time.

🚗 Xochimilco is located on the outskirts of the city, around a 1 hour drive from the center. Public transport is limited so it’s best to a get a taxi. Taxis cost around 350 peso (£13.50) each way.

🍻 You can BYOB onto the boats, and there are a few shops nearby where you can pick up spirits, beers, snacks etc before you board. There are also boats selling drinks and tacos along the canals but these are more expensive.

🎵 Mariachis are one of the highlights of Xochimilco, but you do need to pay them if you want them to play on your boat. You’ll pay 200-300 peso (£8-11) per song. Some take card now but it’s good to have cash too.

🚾 There are plenty of toilets along the canals where you can make stops. You’ll usually need to pay a small fee for 5-10 peso (20-40p) to use the toilet.

Have you heard of Xochimilco before? Do you have any questions about visiting? 🇲🇽

Did you know that just 30 minutes north of the iconic Niagara Falls is the much lesser known Niagara-on-the-Lake wine region? 🍷

This stunning wine region is most famous for its signature ice wine, a unique type of sweet dessert wine produces from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine, making the most of Canada’s freezing winters ❄️ But it also produced a fantastic range of wines, roses, and reds too.

The region has numerous vineyards and producers spread among the Niagara countryside, with well maintained bike lanes connecting most of the area. We rented bikes from zoomleisurebikes and spent an entire day visiting vineyards and sampling wines 😍

Some of our favourite Niagara vineyards are:
🍷 pellerwines
🍷 twosisters_vineyards
🍷 jacksontriggs
🍷 inniskillinwines
🍷 stratuswines

Most vineyards offer a tasting flight of 3-4 wines (including one ice wine) for around $25 CAD and you don’t need to book in advance.

Many wineries also have beautiful restaurants overlooking the vines where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch. Or for something a little cheaper, you can head into the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake itself (what we did!).

Did you know Niagara was a wine region? Would you like to visit? 🇨🇦

‼️ Skip to the last slide to see us almost crash our bikes after one too many wines 🙈

#gifted A moment of appreciation for the shoes please…

Since getting these keeneurope Elle Backstrap sandals, they’ve barely come off my feet during my travels in Canada…

From wandering through the streets of Toronto and sunny days lounging by the lakes, to cycling 40km+ around Niagara’s vineyards and even taking a soaking on the Maid of the Mist, these sandals are the most comfortable, durable, and cute multipurpose shoes I’ve ever owned.

They really are the dream for a nomad or backpacker with limited suitcase space 😍 Plus they’re planet-friendly, with straps made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and jute-infused outsole to use less rubber.
