Hi guys 🙋‍♀️ I disappeared off Instagram for a bit, and suddenly a few days turned into weeks and it was gone from my phone and I realised I was thinking and feeling differently and thought you know what why not keep this going for a bit and see what happens!! Nothing major happened, but I definitely reconnected with something on the inside which I think after checking the damn screen day in day out for years was quite cool and everyone should try it. I wasn’t losing hours a week to scrolling and not being in control of what I thought about or felt! 🙌 The best thing to happen was it made me realise I love doing music and doing music is different from posting about it! Hi lovely humans 💓 I just posted the full version of this video on my Facebook and YouTube- link in my bio if you’d like to check it out. I just wanna say that this little space of electronic connection means a lot to me. Some of you are extremely supportive on here, and it really resonates. The last post I did I was actually in hospital about to have a general anaesthetic for a small surgery. Nothing major and all fine but every time someone puts you to sleep and cuts you open it’s a bit scary!!! The fact I was able to connect with you and put some of my creations out from right there in the hospital bed when I was feeling so nervous and vulnerable meant so much, and even more was the fact that you guys cared about these little sonic and visual pieces of expression. I don’t want to bring the personal into this too much but then I write music so it’s all pretty personal right?! And I guess I’m getting bolder in my ability to use this space because I am seeing it as a supportive and loving place, and fuck the haters 🙃 Anyway, thank you and I hope you enjoy the video... You know that feeling when it feels like your ACTUAL heart is breaking??? 💔 Here is a longer snippet from my recent creation of some visuals for Just Say It’s Over. I’m going to put the full video on my IGTV shortly, but wanted to post here as well because honestly IG is weird with portrait only video in there and there is more freedom on the grid. I’m not in this video, and created it very cheaply using stock footage. I didn’t specifically search it out or anything - honestly I just started and these beautiful scenes seemed so appropriate for the track...the sentiment here is nostalgic - you know the feeling of having to let go of something that has been so darn good. It’s sad but kind of happy sad but ouch it hurts so damn much at the same time. Anyway, this is a little offering for some visual reflection alongside the song. Challenge accepted 👊 I went to a mostly all boys school (c. 10 girls to 500 boys) as I was the first year it went co-ed. My prep school before that was also super imbalanced and had that true old school tough pride vibe where beatings & iron beds were considered a matter of pride. It’s safe to say in both institutions the patriarchy was LIVING THE DREAM 🤨(although cracks were starting to show!!) It took me a long time to realise the extent to which I had internalised this way of thinking, and I am still unpicking it every day. Honestly, I bloody loved my time at both schools, but that’s because by the time I got to senior school I was a pro at mastering the patriarchy as a female minority. But this wasn’t a conscious choice - it came completely naturally to me as a means of survival. Before you a scroll on because who cares about some poor privileged biatch there is a point to this besides woah is me.... I chose to go to a school that imbalanced because my junior school had me thinking ‘boys were more fun’, - I loved the boys’ banter (also I was a 13 year old girl so kind of also duh) and I genuinely felt a sense of elitism because I got on so well with boys and was part of the pack. When it’s the dominant pack it’s a great pack to be in!! It’s no specific person’s fault that I thought like this, it was a reflection of the culture I grew up in. BUT it has impacted my identity, because being female in that environment becomes performative. And you can’t base your self identity and perception on a performance. There has to be something underneath. So these challenges, where we take stock collectively of what it means to be a woman, are important. Because it’s not the same as being a man. It’s not better, it’s just different. 💪 When I worked with wolfjamescreative on this shoot one of the key things was none of this bullshit female positioning as weak. I believe in creating what we want around us and the energy we want to bring. We did these shots after I had finished writing the EP at a very specific time in my life and what unfolded unleashed a new type of anger and fierceness in me which has carried through to my latest work. I don’t know if it started here but the woman is a genius and can capture things in you that you don’t even realise are there. By the way, I think anger is a great thing (if used responsibly and I’m not gonna lie that’s not always me...) It’s a signpost telling you yes ok I am not going to stand for this, and signals what you do and don’t want in your life or how you want to be treated. It can also be a big old cover up for hurt, but not always, or even if yes always I think that can really serve us when we need to stand up for ourselves. In my sessions, whenever I start a song before I get into the vocal booth and get ready to record, while sitting and listening through the song I always scribble all over the page any things I need to remember, changes of any lyrics last minutes and any other thoughts, sometimes new lyric ideas etc. I also always jot down the artists I want to reference and bring to mind in my performance. These were the incredible women I held in mind for a moment before one of the songs we did today. I love how performance is made up of tiny recycled and borrowed moments influencing other moments - a little bit of the butterfly effect in music.
