You may have noticed that I haven't been in here for a while.
Unfortunately, I have really been struggling with long covid, and have had to take the decision to leave nutrition coaching behind. Coaching intensively 1:1 and wearing all the hats in a business, has been too difficult to continue. I have to work in a more manageable way that means I can work on my fatigue and breathlessness. I've been able to get amazing results for clients but neglected myself in the process. So now I must practice what I preach!
I have taken a new job for a vegan organisation which I'm very excited for in July but I can't talk about.

1. You first fill in an intake form so we can see your starting point. I also get you to track your food for 2 weeks, so I can get an accurate picture of why you’re struggling to lose weight. 2. Then come our 1:1 calls where we thrash things out, you can share your worries and together we come up with a plan to get you from A to Z. This is the beauty of 1:1 because your plan might look different to my next client. We take into account your favourite foods, your lifestyle, routines, if you have kids, what you enjoy... so it’s completely personalised and designed to be easy.
3. Alongside this you get Whatsapp / text access to me for the full 12 weeks. That means you can message or send me voice notes anytime about anything. So if you’re having a rough morning, having the urge to snack, feeling like you can’t do it, or just want to show me a new recipe you’ve made... I’M RIGHT THERE!
4. You also get your own personal portal FOR LIFE. That’s where I’ll upload the notes and action points after every call, any help sheets you need, meal ideas, recipes... basically any resources you need in one place!

You need to do the ugly work and get through your emotional eating issues. Slimming World or Keto aren't going to cut it. If you're ploughing through snacks every time you're stressed, down and tired... trying to stick to a diet that's already restrictive isn't going to work. 
Sound harsh? I've been through years of emotional eating AND coached women through it... you have to get to the root cause or you'll never keep off the weight.

Examples:
If you turn to food when you’re really busy, but your schedule always seems to be full… you should do a time audit and find gaps where you can have downtime. Are you doing self-care ? These are long term strategies to help relieve the stress related to busy-ness. But what about in the moment when you want to eat? You could distract yourself with a relaxation activity instead.

If loneliness is a trigger for you, you may be lacking social interaction. What could you do about that? Joining a club, craft class, gym, a games night every month, could be ideas. There are many online groups too - from mindfulness, to high impact workouts. In the immediate moment, chatting online or joining in with online group video game could be ideas to tackle the feeling of loneliness.

You could be eating junk food snacks every day when you come home. Is this a reward for a long commute, failure to prep healthy options (and too tired to cook) or something else? You could have an alternative reward, such as a long rest (with a blanket and pillow laid out), a prepped meal waiting for you, and a note on the cupboard to remind yourself!

Many people need support to tackle emotional eating. In my program, together we do a full analysis of what's causing you to eat when you're not hungry. Then we put a plan in place to beat this so you can start dropping the lbs. The emotional support from a 1:1 coach is really important as we can talk for an hour via video every week, and send messages or voice notes to me every day. That means as soon as you're triggered I'm right there to troubleshoot.

Cravings are driven by your brain’s need for a “reward” — not your body’s need for food. If you can have only one bite and stop there, indulging a little when you get a craving is absolutely fine. But if you tend to binge and overeat as soon as you get a taste of sugary foods, then giving in to the cravings is the worst thing you can do. 

I recommend 3-4 weeks completely off refined sugar to retrain your habits, and then occasional treats. This does depend on the person, but when I had biscuit cravings, I know I couldn’t just stop at one. Even if I portioned them out and did all the other modest stuff! I’d go back for more... and more. I needed to draw that line for a while.

“Actually I lost 10lb on my diet this month so screw you Katy!”

Ok hear me out.

Why diets don’t work:

📍The statistics across the board show that they’re unsustainable in the long term, so weight is put back on. Maybe you’re losing weight, but for how long? At what cost?

📍Diets create a restrictive, controlling relationship with food. You start to see certain foods as bad, unobtainable.

📍You can be eating so little, or the wrong things, that it’s hard to get adequate nutrition. For example…

📍Keto - studies are starting to show the long term health implications of it, plus it cuts out whole food groups. It was created for certain health conditions!

📍1200 calorie diet - you could eat burger and cake every day as long as you’re under allowance. Shouldn’t we care more about our long-term health? 1200 is the recommended intake of a toddler. It’s so hard to get adequate nutrition this way.

You're in your body for life. Nourish it, love it, and yes lose weight... but in a healthy way.

Peanut Butter Easter Eggs!

After I’ve gorged on one Easter Egg, I feel a little sick and crave something with great taste but more nutritional value.

If overindulging in Easter eggs, hot cross buns and pastries leave you bloated, uncomfortable and with sugar crashes too, I have the perfect treat for you.

DIRECTIONS:

✴️ Add the dates and plant milk to a food processor until small bits are left. 

✴️ Add all remaining ingredients apart from the chocolate. Allow the mixture to form a moist dough in the food processor. It should be soft enough to form a shape, but not runny.

✴️ Scoop out a tablespoon of ‘dough’ at a time and press into your Easter mould. If you’re not using a mould, you can shape into eggs in your hands or use egg cups.

✴️ Place your eggs / moulds into the freezer for 20 minutes to harden.

✴️ While you’re waiting, melt the dark chocolate over a double saucepan.

✴️ When the eggs are hardened, you can dip each individual egg into the melted chocolate to coat. Use a fork to dip and tap on the side of the bowl to remove any excess.

✴️ Put each egg on a baking sheet and pop back in the freezer for just 10 minutes to set.

✴️ You can keep your finished bites in a sealed container in the fridge until you’re ready to enjoy.

Whenever I notice my attitude spiralling, I can always correlate it to not giving myself enough ‘me time.’ I've suffered from burnout in a bad way, and it is no fun. It causes stress, anxiety, physical symptoms.

Have you felt the weight of stress and anxiety that makes it feel like you can’t breathe, like you are drowning or struggling to just to keep your head above water?

The other reality is that it is not going to get better until you start prioritising your own mental and physical health.

Silly little bits of self care every day might not seem like much, but it adds up to make you feel a bit more sane in this crazy world!

I SEE YOUR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS! DID YOU KNOW THAT IT'S AFFECTING YOUR WEIGHT LOSS?

We are just a few days from finishing up this month already! I love how we’ve been elevating our efforts together all month long, but we’re not done yet! Our last week is all about Accelerating Your Attitude.

With a healthy mindset, you are more equipped to flip the script on whatever negative thoughts you may have. This takes work, and everything we discuss this week is a consistent practice, not just a quick fix. There are so many things you can try - try to implement 1 or 2 of this week's tips for about a month before you give up or swap.

We all have negative thoughts about ourselves. I do - every single day! When I first found out I had long covid, I told myself I'd never get better, that this was me now. 
It’s what you do with those thoughts that matters. Firstly, acknowledge them, be curious and don't try to get rid of them or shove them into a corner. Let them come and go without them dictating your actions. The book The Happiness Trap talks a lot about this, I highly recommend it!

We can also flip the script and change our perspective to speak and think more positively. 
You are allowed to change the story you tell about yourself.

Here’s some tips on how to change your internal narrative to be more positive:
📌 Start acting like the person you want to be. Not who you think you are or who you think other people will like.
📌 Become more mindful of your thoughts, behaviors and actions. Identify any triggers. You can even journal on it or keep a diary.
📌 Take time to reflect on your thoughts and what they really mean or where they come from.
📌 Identify the limiting beliefs you have that are holding you back from really reaching for your goals. I have an exercise on this if you want it!
📌 Take ownership of your story. Take responsibility. Don’t let others write it for you.
📌  Focus on progress, not perfection. Small steps still move you forward. Nobody's mindset is 100% positive all day every day.

Struggling to hit your 10,000 steps per day?

Like I said a few days ago, movement is key for overall health! 
10,000 steps is only a rough guide for movement, but if you're doing no other exercise, it's a great starting point. Did you know only 15% of people hit 10,000 steps in a day? 😱
Those people should get kids because I've hit 3,000 by 9am after the school run 😅
Here are some fun and fab ways you can hit that goal (without procreating):
📌 Walk a dog
📌 Take a moving break from work
📌 Walk laps of the garden listening to a podcast
📌 Get a treadmill desk
📌 Park further away from anywhere you go
📌 Get off the bus / train 2 stops early
📌 Get up and walk around during ad breaks of shows
📌 Walk when chatting on the phone

📌 Dance to the radio
📌 Challenge whoever you live with to a race around the house
📌 Play with kids - hop scotch, skipping, hide and seek

You’re on a diet and you think about food all the time. 

You think you must be mad, how much you obsess over it and crave something.

You think, is it just me? Nobody else finds it this hard. Why can't I do this? I've seen before and after pics where women have lost 100lb!

TOUGH LOVE MOMENT. Thing is, we make excuses. We tell ourselves that we're special, the unicorn that can't lose weight because of XYZ. It's good to have something to blame and be a victim, because then you're not accountable for your choices. 
We can all get lean, if that's what we want to do. Doesn't matter if you feel addicted to sugar, are over 50, menopausal, have PCOS...

I couldn't stick to a diet for more than a few days. A week max. I thought about sugary food every second of every day. I ate until I was so full I could be sick. I was ashamed and mentally beat myself up. I thought I was that special unicorn that couldn't lose the weight. Because of my PCOS. Because I was breastfeeding and hungry. Then it was because I loved sugar too much. ALL OF THE EXCUSES.

Did all that self talk help me lose weight and achieve my goal? Of course not. 

I talk about all the things that did help in my other posts.

This week we are stepping it up again by focusing on More Mindful Movement. 

Did you know that the typical office worker may spend up to 15 hours per day sitting?! A review of 47 studies found that prolonged sitting was strongly linked to negative health outcomes, regardless of exercise levels. So let's get moving a little more!

You may have noticed I don't talk about exercise as much as food. That's mainly because I strongly believe we have to get our eating habits and mindset in the right place, before we try to incorporate new fancy workout routines.

Plus, if you're looking to lose weight, food is the major component of that.
For example, you could go out for a run for an hour every day, just so you could burn enough calories to come home and eat 2 cakes. You'd be in a calorie deficit so may lose weight. But would that be good for your health? Not really!

We want sustainable and enjoyable weight loss, and healthy bodies - INSIDE AND OUT! I want you ladies to live a long life and kick ass.

Exercise was the last thing I brought into my schedule when I got healthy and lost 40lb.

If you want to start exercising, I always recommend doing something you enjoy, and building up to it. A long time ago, I forced myself to go to the gym and go out running - both of which I can't stand! Why did I torture myself? 😆

I love swimming, walks and yoga. Yoga is the main one for me at the minute because I can do it at home around the kids. When I first started practising yoga, I had zero flexibility and no idea what I was doing. I started beginner videos on Youtube for 15 minutes at a time.
I've made a lot of progress, feel the benefits, do longer practices now... and it helps my mindset too.

What kind of exercise are you in no rush to do? And what gives you a thrill when you do it?

It’s our last day of Kicking Things Up In The Kitchen week and I want to leave you with a few simple, delicious and healthy snack ideas! 😋 
Snacks always seem to be overlooked when trying to stay on track with your nutrition...

Do you plan your meals, but forget to plan snacks or don’t realize how important they are? Or even worse, do you tell yourself that you can’t snack! 

It’s so important to eat if we’re genuinely hungry. Make sure your snack has a source of protein in it, as well as fruit or veg. When we snack on just an apple, we get hungry so quickly again. Add a few crackers or a tbsp of nut butter and it’s much more satisfying!

PS. As a bonus, try adding in some of the herbs and spices I mentioned earlier this week! Like garlic powder in your hummus, cilantro on your avocado rice cake, rosemary on your cucumbers, cumin on your sweet potato fries or cinnamon on your celery sticks.
