After an altercation with a man on the train this morning, I was left thinking about my safety in London especially with my camera gear. So here are some tips from me. Phone safety * Walk against traffic so scooter thieves can’t approach unseen from behind. * Keep your phone on a cross-body lanyard and walk close to buildings not the curb. * Check it briefly, then pocket it, don’t walk with it out. Wearing cameras * Wear camera straps under a jacket when possible to avoid drawing attention. * When walking, keep a hand on lenses as thieves can twist them off quickly. * Put your cameras away as soon as you stop shooting. Camera bags * Choose low-profile bags (no big camera brand logos). * A rucksack across both shoulders frees your hands and makes snatching harder. * On public transport, keep your bag between your feet, not beside you. In a crowd it’s safer in front of you, not behind. * If standing on public transport, try and keep your back against the edge of the train and face the exit. Your gear will be safer and you can see anyone approaching. Awareness while walking * Walk tall, alert, and purposeful, muggers look for easy targets. * Use only one headphone and avoid noise-cancelling so you stay aware. Pick a place that feels like you Choose a spot that actually means something to you, not just somewhere that looks good on Instagram. Beach, park, coffee shop, your sofa, whatever feels natural. If you’re relaxed, your photos will show it (and nobody wants to look like they’re lost in a staged tourism ad anyway). 2. Dress like you, but on a good day Think of it like your style, with a glow-up. Nothing stiff, itchy or that makes you hold your breath the whole time. Avoid loud prints, logos, or dressing like twins. Coordinate, don’t clone. Comfort = confidence. 3. Pretend I’m not there (in the least creepy way possible) The magic happens when you’re in your own world, chatting, laughing, being awkward in love. Don’t overthink it. I’ll guide you when needed, but give me genuine smiles and slightly chaotic cuddles over mannequin poses any day. 4. Chase that golden hour glow Golden hour is basically nature’s Instagram filter.
