Thank you, Brisbane!

Last night marked the world premiere of Gems: A Triptych by benjaminmillepied, presented in full for the first time at BrisbaneFestival.

Commissioned by vancleefarpels and presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels, this trilogy of contemporary ballets—Reflections, Hearts & Arrows, and On the Other Side—draws on the symbolic and emotional resonance of precious stones. Each work offers a distinct world where movement, music, and design converge to reveal something luminous and intimate.

Critics called Reflections “elegant, spare and eloquent,” while Hearts & Arrows was praised for having “energy and spirit enough for twice its length.” Across the program, Millepied’s dancers “look natural and emotionally open,” blending ballet and contemporary movement with ease.

Next stops:

LA Dance Project recognizes the lasting contributions of Glorya Kaufman to the dance community in Los Angeles. Her support helped shape the company’s early trajectory, including the commissioning of Moving Parts—Benjamin Millepied’s inaugural work for LADP. The piece, a collaboration with composer Nico Muhly, featured visual installation by Christopher Wool and costume design by Rodarte, and was presented by Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center in 2012.

As part of LADP’s inaugural program, Moving Parts marked a significant moment in the company’s launch and helped establish its artistic identity.

Through her commitment to dance and the performing arts, Glorya Kaufman expanded opportunities for artists and audiences across the city. Her impact continues to inform the work we do and the community we serve.

We mark the passing of Bob Wilson, a visionary whose theatrical language redefined the possibilities of time, image, and gesture on stage.

Across collaborations with composers, choreographers, and visual artists, Wilson cultivated a poetic and uncompromising body of work.

He was endlessly curious about what might emerge from the unknown, once remarking, “I’m interested in process. I’m interested in what happens when you don’t know what’s going to happen.” (Artforum, 2014)

As founder of the Watermill Center and a mentor to generations of artists, Wilson resisted instruction in favor of provocation and discovery. “I don’t teach people what to do. I try to create an environment where they can discover it for themselves.” (The New York Times, 2019)

May that ethos continue to resonate, inspiring institutions and individuals alike to explore abstraction, rhythm, and radical visual composition. 2025-07-31 23:56:29 We mark.. 0 - 4 -23%

Earlier this month, L.A. Dance Project and The Wallis presented Gatherings, a triple-bill program featuring works by choreographers Benjamin Millepied, Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, and Janie Taylor.

The evening closed with 'Sleepwalker’s Encyclopedia', a work by acclaimed dancer, teacher, choreographer, former New York City Ballet principal, LADP company member, and current Artistic Director of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute, Janie Taylor. The piece featured a set designed by American artist ben_styer.

“The stunning, multi-talented Janie Taylor… managed to unite not only her deep love for dance and music, but also for art and design… With a combination of ballet technique bursting into jazz-like joy, and a bit of Gaga technique thrown in, she reflected her own playful soul with each phrase and statement.”

“One of the highlights of the evening was Bobbi Jene Smith’s and Or Schraiber’s “Quartet of Five.” It seemed to pluck this tour de force from some universal dance god and gifted us all. Smith, Schraiber and dancers, not only used recognizable dance vernacular but insisted on an eclectic future for dance creativity itself. The inventiveness, the dynamic power, construction, and control was a surprising gift, that guided one along forcelessly. It gifted the onlookers with movement and design and a love of the music, the String Quartet No. 5 by Philip Glass, and adding soul to each phrase. An amazing work done by a quintuple group of brilliant dancers was a kind of essence of the piece. The rare outrageous power and commitment of Courtney Conovan, grabbed attention effortlessly. While Fernberger’s delicate strength and lyricism surprised and gave way to the joy of Jeremy Coachman’s, Marcel Mejia, and Nicholas Sakai’s intoxicating and robust dancing and partnering.”

The 2025 L.A. Dance Project x EDLA!
Summer Dance Intensive Begins!

L.A. Dance Project is passionate about creating a safe space for young dancers to express themselves, nurture their unique voices, and make meaningful discoveries through movement. Since 2019, we have partnered with Everybody Dance LA! (EDLA!), a nonprofit serving over 4,000 students annually, transforming lives and communities through the power of high-quality dance education in low-income areas of Los Angeles.

At the heart of this partnership is the Summer Dance Intensive, where EDLA! students train at LADP’s performance theater and studio five days a week, six hours a day, honing their technical skills and artistry. Led by 2025 Artistic Director Shu Kinouchi, this immersive experience includes ballet and modern technique classes, self-expression movement exploration, reflection periods, and rehearsals for an original piece performed at the program’s culmination.

L.A. Dance Project is headed to Australia September 4-7 2025!

For the first time, Benjamin Millepied’s GEMS, a bold contemporary ballet trilogy, will be performed in its entirety at Brisbane Festival.

Discover a ballet triptych by Benjamin Millepied celebrating the unity of dance, music, and visual art.

Commissioned by Van Cleef & Arpels, this trilogy of contemporary ballets—Reflections (2013), Hearts & Arrows (2014), and On the Other Side (2016)—draws inspiration from the symbolic and emotional resonance of precious stones. Each work offers a distinct world where movement, music, and design converge to reveal something luminous and intimate.

Reflections is a meditation on longing—sensual, sharp-edged, and fleeting. Set to David Lang’s haunting score and framed by Barbara Kruger’s bold visual language, the ballet explores the tension between presence and absence, desire and memory.

Hearts & Arrows pulses with crystalline energy, carried by the precise, layered rhythms of Philip Glass. Liam Gillick’s sculptural design of shifting light and shadow becomes a silent partner to the choreography, where emotion takes on an architectural clarity.

On the Other Side is a deeply human work—intimate, emotional, and communal. Set to a suite of piano études by Glass and enveloped by Mark Bradford’s immersive, painterly set, the ballet becomes a portrait of togetherness, tracing the bonds between individuals and the quiet strength of collective experience
