You might need to squat with foam rollers on your shoulders and scare your gym crush.

My gym’s hack squat machine isn’t a good fit for me, as I’m not able to get below parallel in my squat when using it.

I shove foam rollers under my shoulders (I prefer yoga blocks, but my gym doesn’t have them) to position my body lower from the start. This allows me to sit a$$ to grass and make the machine work for me.

Save and send to someone that is terrified of a hack squat (or looking stupid), you’re not alone 🥰.

I hired a really great calisthenics coach last spring.

Truthfully, I was bored and wanted a challenge to mix with traditional strength training that would force me to feel like a beginner again.

It took me five months to do this one thing reasonably well.

I still suck at a lot of things and have gotten good at a few others.

My best advice as a trainer with over a decade of experience helping beginners get strong:

Give yourself at least a year when working through a program, with small tweaks every 12 weeks as needed.

Stop hopping from thing to thing every few months.

Let the program and your consistent work marinate.

Give a GOOD program aligned with your goals a committed 365.

Stop overthinking it and just show up to practice.

Surprise, we (The Beast+me) moved to Oregon 🙃🌲!

For a short time or a long time, we don’t know yet…

Vader is living his best life and I’m wondering if he’ll ever let me live in a big city again and if I’ll survive the winter, only time will tell.

I went dark while processing this huge change and all the sadness and closure that comes with, but am completely confident that trusting my gut has never failed me.

Bulky=Blocked 🚩

“Bulky” is such a boring conversation in the year of our Lady Gaga 2025.

Building muscle takes years of consistent progressive overload strength training and diet considerations, like a slight caloric surplus.

It’s very hard for anyone to “bulk,” especially women.

It’s a very long process to bulk intentionally (build muscle) vs. unintentionally (no plan, add body fat).

Building visible muscle tone is not going to magically happen to you in your first year of strength training, especially if you’re not following an all-consuming bodybuilding lifestyle. It might not even happen for 3-5 years for many women.

The bulky and inflamed people have no business informing your training decisions.

Block bulky 😘.

I’d bet my IRA more people have back pain from running than deadlifting.

Strength training is one of the most beginner-friendly, adaptable activities out there that people avoid unnecessarily due to fear. I could teach my dad to squat today from scratch with the assistance of a machine and he’d have good form.

Running is one of the most universally accessible activities that is often considered easy/safe for beginners. Too many people are out there pounding the streets looking like newborn baby deer with heel whips to boot.

I ❤️ running and deadlifting for all levels; the point of this Reel is to plant the seed in your 🧠 that lifting weights is not dangerous, scary or “too hard” for a beginner when compared to other widely accepted “safe” activities. You’re very unlikely to hurt yourself with proper planning.

Stay tuned for the upcoming Bells Up BEGINNER COHORT.

I’ve recently created a NEW, 20-class program that covers all the basics of common kettlebell movements/patterns appropriate for beginners.

💻 This program will be semi-self led (you’ll have videos to watch as well as form checks/group sessions). It will set the foundation to use free-weights without fear.

💪 You’ll learn to squat, hinge, lunge, rotate, push and pull, along with kettlebell-specific movements like the Turkish Get Up, cleans and swings.

If you think weightlifting isn’t for you and running is a safer option, LIES 😘.

You don’t need to go full Brian-Johnson-look-like-a-vampire 🧛‍♂️-live-forever-mode to feel fantastic, especially if you’re 40+ like me.

I used to overindulge in supplementation because more is healthier, right?!?

(((wrong, loading my cart at Willner Chemists didn’t save me)))

Now I keep my daily routine simple, based on bi-annual blood testing. I suggest you do the same before spending 💸 on a NAD drip or peptide cocktail 🍹.

Smart women nail the basics consistently and save time/funds for when it counts (menopause and maybe a facelift down the road, don’t come at me).

Get a blood test and take a multi-vitamin, then add layers.

Strength training and Pilates are not the same.

Do both if you choose.

Pilates will help you gain strength as an absolute beginner, but it has limits over time.

Strength training in a progressive overload format should be a top priority if you’re a woman (especially one in your 40’s like me) as it’s the best way to build and maintain muscle mass.

I make group training programs that run 3 x per week for women that love Pilates, yoga, running, and/or just need a smart training plan that fits their lifestyle for this reason.

You don’t need to devote your life to strength training, but it will be the glue that holds it all together.

RPE ATE 💁‍♀️

(aka RPE 8 OR RIR 2)

When your last two consecutive reps start to slow down, you probably have two reps in reserve (RIR) until you actually hit a failure wall. Your RPE (rate of perceived exertion) is likely at 80% of your max capacity.

I usually train in this 80-100% range for strength+hypertrophy work with rep sets between 6-15 depending on the movement (this is not a 1-3 rep max convo).

My last two reps of 8 in this set were hard, but I could have pushed two more until absolute done time at this weight. Next week, I’ll try pushing 10.

Every set in every session does not need to be pushed to failure, but you should be getting close most of the time.

Next time you’re lifting a heavy set for reps, think of me whispering this in your ear: could you do two more at that weight? Would that feel like an 80% or 💯?

BELLS UP CDMX 🇲🇽 RETREAT 2025!

When brainstorming ideas for a México City strength training and travel experience, I wanted to create a feeling of ADVENTURE and show guests that México has much more to offer beyond the typical beach destination.

Six months later with the help from the incredible team seek.dharma, 10 women from all corners of the USA touched down in CDMX, up for anything and united by a common thread: kettlebells and weight rooms.

This trip exceeded everything I could have hoped for; it felt like a weekend away with friends that had know each other for years. The vibe was so special, I even invited the group to my rooftop for pastries, form checks, cold plunging, dog kisses (the Beast was in heaven) and relaxing moments together.

Even though my social battery has been fried the past two days since, every bit was worth it (this felt like my kettlebell wedding)!

Meeting people in person I’ve worked with via online strength training for the first time in 5+ years healed something post-pandemic in me I didn’t know was there.

To the women that booked the trip, were up for a dream-turned-adventure (including a surprise airport shut down) and ate all the tacos like true Chilangos:

Gracias a todos por todo, me inspiran muchísimo y ya quiero volver a hacerlo. Gracias a México por ser mi hogar lejos de casa, espero haberlos hecho sentir orgullosos.

A big thank you to Annabelle, Camilo and Karen for being my constant support from Morocco to Argentina to México 💕.

❤️Lacee

It’s been so fun to push myself in a new way and have a knowledgeable coach take the lead.

Today’s upper push set from flindersfitness:

🥂variations of scapular work: prone I-lifts, scapular ring pull ups and feet-on-wall retractions

🥂x2 sets hollow body rocks and reverse crunches with extra work to lift my 🍑 off the floor

🥂x2-3 sets of incline push ups, ring skin the cat, ring dips, overhead presses, bench dips and toes to bar (lol my adductors and triceps)

NEW programs are starting for Bells Up Gym and Studio 3/24 and 3/31 for a mix of kettlebells/bodyweight or a full on gym strength program led by an experienced coach (me🙋‍♀️).

How do you know you’re getting stronger?

The easy answer: you’re improving weight/reps/duration with time.

This is the BIG secret to strength: you need to be consistent and PRESENT during your sessions.

Training on autopilot will keep you in the same place forever.

How to be present:

💌 When your sets become easier, increase weight, reps and/or tempo depending on the movement. Needing to do this is a sign you’re getting stronger.

💌Track your reps/sets in an old-fashioned notebook and review at the beginning of each week. Even if an app you use tracks for you, do it in a notebook as well because you’ll always have it.

💌 Don’t put the responsibility on your group fitness instructor to ask you to level up: pay attention to what you’re doing each session and work on improving weight/reps/duration. You shouldn’t be using the same resistance indefinitely.

💌 I benchmark “test” my clients and Bells Up Studio members every 3 months to create measurable goals/show progress regarding strength. Programs don’t drastically change, but these check in’s allow for reflection and alterations. You need to test yourself.

It’s (not) science, I made that up.

Take results from physically untrained people with a grain of🧂 because body transformations start with a sprint then turn into the longest, slowest ultramarathon of your life.

In other words: results happen fast in the beginning, then take significantly longer the more “in shape” you become.

It doesn’t matter how “hard” a workout is, notice the most trained folks are out there doing the most basic of the basics.

I remember the woman I was 20 years ago and I choose to speak to her through sharing here.

For too many years, fitness confused me. I wasted so much time, money and prime years of physical youth in methods, classes and fads that made “promises” that never seemed to happen.

That used terms and catch phrases to “get me in the door” but for what?

To make money.

To sell a solution to a complex answer (in reality a simple one) I couldn’t find myself.

I wish I had someone when I was in my 20’s-30’s that was honest:

💌spin classes wouldn’t make me thin, but my legs and heart would get strong
💌running wouldn’t make me look toned, but was so good for my overall health and social life
💌I needed to focus on nutrition as much as lifting weights to get “lean” or grow
💌barre/HIIT classes were more of a 1-2 days each week thing than an entire workout plan
💌 my Pilates instructor was cut because she was a professional dancer

Nothing in fitness is complicated.

Unfortunately, health is a business more than ever and for those of us in the industry, it’s OUR CHOICE how we show up publicly. WHO we represent; the companies and company we align ourselves with.

Do we sell out for clickbait or willfully discuss the benefits and limitations to our particular style of training?

Do we educate or rely on false promises that prey on insecurities?

Do we use attention grabs to “get people in the door” and justify that later?

Do we give advice outside of our scope because our bodies are the best sales pitch?

The reason I post is for myself at 20 because young women need more voices aside from the viral ones.
