- More things I wish people knew about sunscreen: Yes, you can use chemical sunscreens while pregnant SPF is NOT just UVB protection - blocking all UVB and no UVA only gives SPF 11 UVB contributes more to premature ageing than UVA (stop saying "A for Ageing, B for Burning" pls) UVA levels are nowhere near constant over a day or a year, it just varies a bit less than UVB Mineral sunscreens mostly absorb UV and convertit to heat, just like chemical sunscreens. Only 5-10% is reflected/scattered (and that's not "better" in any way) A lot of your "2 fingers" of sunscreen are WAY TOO THIN, scrape them into a 1/4 teaspoon measure to check Layering sun protection methods is best (sunscreen, hats, clothing, shade, sunglasses) Mineral sunscreens still need to be reapplied #spf #sunscreen #skincare #skinstagram
- No, there aren't microplastics in most of your sunscreens, or other beauty products. Beat the Microbead uses an extremely loose definition for microplastics that includes all synthetic polymers, even those that are very much NOT plastic. And if you're selling sunscreen like Kelly Slater, you might want to, uh, ✨do your own research✨ A much bigger source of microplastics is the packaging. But even then, microplastics have been massively exaggerated as an environmental concern. This is largely because of the natural = safer fallacy, and a lot of greenwashing in marketing. As consumers, we tend to focus on end-of-life, so it's very easy for companies to greenwash with "plastic-free" claims. But a lot of environmental impact happens before you finish using the product - plastics are often a more sustainable packaging option when the whole life cycle is considered. I highly recommend following theecowell for solid sustainability info, and some great posts on microplastics and Beat the Microbead! Shoutout to drjessicaknurick for sending this post to me - another great person to follow especially for nutrition insights 🤓 #spf #microplastics #skincarescience #sunscreenmyths #sunscreen
- Clarifying my earlier reel on the Choice SPF tests and Ultra Violette Lean Screen's low result, some more reflections on what went wrong, and which sunscreens to set aside for now - see my story highlights (in my profile) for the full collection! Who would've thought so many of my favourite topics (sunscreen, scientific fraud, authority bias, fake experts, systemic drivers of misinformation) would all come together in such an unholy mess? 👀 #spf #sunscreen #mythbusting #skincare #skincarescience
