  • 🐳 Dolsan Sikdang 돌산식당 🐋 These days, a program called "Transferring Love" is popular in Korea. It's a program where couples who have broken up gather in one place to do this and that, and viewers find themselves immersed in watching it. The emotion of missing someone seems to be a universal one, not limited to human relationships. It applies to food as well. As mentioned in the previous feed, Yeosu is a beautiful destination filled with delicious food. A few years ago, during a visit to Yeosu, 🐳 encountered a delicacy that 🐳 couldn't forget. Upon returning to Yeosu this time, 🐳 rushed to satisfy that longing as soon as 🐳 arrived. The dish is called "서대회무침" (Spicy raw tongue fish salad). 🐋 Seodae is a pink flat fish, often called 'tongue fish'. In Yeosu, the fish is sliced into sashimi and marinated with spicy and tangy seasoning along with various vegetables. It's an extraordinary delicacy that is hard to find outside Yeosu, making it a dish I longed for years until finally being able to eat it this time. 🐋 When I seek famous local foods, I hop into a taxi and ask the driver for his favorite place. I did the same and the driver who had lived in Yeosu for a long time guided me to a place called "돌산식당" (Dolsan Sikdang). 🐋 Upon arrival, I found a small restaurant operated by an elderly couple. Given its age, it was challenging to find anything resembling the 21st century in this place. Soon, a round tray arrived with various side dishes and a vibrant red plate of raw fish salad, giving me a catharsis that the ones in the program might have felt. 🐋 Enjoying the dish is quite simple. Just put a generous amount of the fish on the rice and seaweed powder in a wide bowl, mix it, and you're done. Since the seasoning can be a bit spicy, taking some bean sprouts from the accompanying bean sprout soup and mixing them in can make things better. The sesame oil adds a savory aroma that stimulates the taste buds. The crisp vegetables, seasoned fish, and a spoonful of warm rice are more than enough compensation for those who have endured the journey to Yeosu. Dolsan Sikdang was the perfect place to catch up with the dish 🐳 has been missing for a long time.
  • Daseon Kalguksu 다선 칼국수 ❄️ The long winter in Korea seems to be coming to an end. During the colder months, there are many dishes that Koreans love to enjoy, particularly those that warm the body. One such dish is Kalguksu, which is a perfect choice for lunch on icy days. 🏰 Suwon, a major city located just south of Seoul, is a vibrant place that balances the old with the new. With a population of over 1 million, it has been significant since the Joseon Dynasty. One of its notable landmarks is the Hwaseong Fortress, a cultural heritage site surrounded by unique and trendy spots that attract the youth. If you’re interested in visiting, make sure to stop by Daseon Kalguksu for a delicious meal before heading to the fortress from Suwon Station. 🏢 Daseon Kalguksu has been a beloved restaurant for locals seeking to warm up with this comforting dish for more than 25 years. For an additional 6,000 KRW, you can order the Kalguksu Meal (Jeongsik), which includes suyuk (boiled pork slices) served alongside the noodles. 🍚The meal begins with a bowl of boribap (barley rice), a classic appetizer accompanied by shredded radish kimchi and sesame oil. Mix them together with gochujang, which you’ll find in a red tube container on the table. The combination of sour and spicy flavors in the rice bowl will definitely raise your appetite. 🍖 Next, a few slices of boiled pork will be served. The suyuk here is exceptional, filled with various, pleasant scents and flavors. Each slice is delightful, and I recommend saving some of the rice to enjoy with the pork. The pork pairs perfectly with kimchi and pickled shrimp. 🍜 As you savor the pork slices, the Kalguksu will arrive. The broth is outstanding and well worth the wait; it features a refreshing smoked anchovy base with added umami from a handful of clams. Again, enjoy it with kimchi for a more interesting experience in taste and texture. Before you know it, your noodle bowl will be empty!
  • 🐳 Dasarang Steak 다사랑 스테이크 🐋 What might be Korea's first fusion dish? It's not certain, but 'Budae Jjigae' also known as Army Stew comes to mind for me. Budae Jjigae is a dish created about 70 years ago in Korea, a time when the country didn't have the luxury of having K-culture. It originated around the U.S. military bases stationed in Korea, where we put processed meat from the bases, kimchi, and other ingredients and cooked them all together. While spam and sausages are easily accessible now, back then, they were considered very luxurious. This is why you can find authentic Budae Jjigae restaurants near U.S. military bases. One such place is Dasarang Steak located right next to the empty military base once called Camp Coiner. 🐋 Dasarang Steak has two main dishes on its menu: steak and army stew. The steak here is not ordinary. The beautiful sirloin comes out on a hot plate, seared with butter, various vegetables, and sausages. The savory seasoning and rich butter aroma are outstanding. It may look less sophisticated than steaks from other places, but it is an honest and dangerously satisfying guilty pleasure. 🐋 Enjoying steak and sausages with butter can bring guilt and heaviness. This is where Budae Jjigae plays a role. It consists of a harmonious blend of Western ingredients such as sausages, spam, baked beans, and cheese, along with Korean elements like kimchi, rice cakes, and perilla leaves. The biggest edge of Dasarang's Budae Jjigae is that the broth is not heavy; it's surprisingly light. Army stew could be a bit heavy with processed meats and cheese, but this one has a refreshing taste. It seems they intentionally kept the broth light to complement the heaviness of the steak. 🐋 Eating such a fantastic stew without carbs is unacceptable. Adding ramen noodles or enjoying it with rice will help cleanse the greasiness in your stomach. 🐋 Yongsan district in Seoul, where there used to be a U.S. military base, has an exotic atmosphere inbetween Korea and outside Korea. If you happen to visit Seoul, try exploring this interesting area which is easily accessible by subway. Also, don't forget to stop by Dasarang Steak and enjoy authentic Budae Jjigae.
