Maxine is officially 3 weeks old and 400g today! She is CHONKY and has the most magnificent well-loved-teddy-bear-fluff of a coat. She is a very happy, fat baby and is starting to be more alert and curious about life outside of her cozy nest.

Anyone who fosters knows that 3 weeks is objectively the most adorable kitten age ever (scientifically proven) so I am extremely excited for the peak cuteness of watching her discover the world around her. And that—against all odds—her world is one where it is safe to be a baby cat. 🖤 2025-09-03 22:49:39 Maxine is official.. 20,493 -22% 208 -54%

Remember Maxine, the kitten in a maxi pad box? Look how much she has grown in just two weeks! So fluffy, so bright, so filled with hope. It breaks my heart that she might never have blossomed, and heals me to watch her bloom. Every baby deserves that chance.

Thank you to our orphankittenclub volunteer fostersxyz for watching her while I was away. She is alive because of you! What a gift. 🖤 2025-08-30 22:32:06 Remember Maxine, the k.. 34,785 +32% 376 -17%
I don’t know how I survived meeting baby wombats. I truly thought the sweetness of these chunky marsupial angels would put me in my grave!

I’ve long admired wombat_rescue from afar, and was overjoyed to meet her and some of her lovely babies she’s caring for like Fluffy Girl (images 1-6) and Emmie (5-12.) We also met many of the wombats in care at possumwoodwildlife (13-19), an organization doing groundbreaking rehabilitation work. Both are must-follows if you are interested in Australian wildlife.

Wombats are fascinating marsupials: they have backward-facing pouches, cube-shaped poop to mark their territory, and a cartilage plate across their rumps that acts as natural armor. Their babies are born extremely underdeveloped and weighing only about 2 grams, and will stay with their mothers for up to 2 years. Caring for baby wombats is therefore a big commitment!

Sadly, many wombat joeys become orphaned when their mothers become sick or injured; car strikes are extremely common and we saw many deceased on the drive to the rescue center. That’s why caregivers carefully check the pouches of mamas and when babies are present and viable, provide around-the-clock care to give them a chance to grow up strong.

I have so much respect for the extremely hard work of those raising marsupial joeys. ❤️

This will be my last Australian wildlife post for now, as I’m officially back in the states & have much to catch up on here in kitten land! I want to deeply thank everyone who made my Australia trip so enjoyable, especially catloversfestival who brought me out for such a great event. I want to introduce you to a wonderful and fascinating Australian organization, sydneyfoxanddingorescue. They focus on saving individual animals who are being orphaned or harmed due to their classification as invasive, including foxes, dingoes and yes—cats!

I had never met a dingo before, and had no idea how many challenges they face or how controversial their protection is. Ecologists tend to consider them native or naturalized, as they have lived in Australia for ~5,000 years and play a key role in the ecosystem…but the agriculture industry & some state governments consider them invasive because they are a threat to livestock (who were, ironically, introduced thousands of years after the dingo.) Because of their threat to these financial interests, they are now only not threatened by deadly government policies in New South Wales, but also forbidden from being rehabilitated for return to the wild.

Enter sydneyfoxanddingorescue. They have saved hundreds of dingoes who have been poisoned, shot, or orphaned. Because they cannot legally return them to the wild, they provide them with sanctuary and when possible, socialize and find them a loving home. Dingoes need special homes with no small animals and high fencing due to their wild nature, but they actually can be very sweet with humans and can legally be adopted.

I had the pleasure of taking Rocky and Ayla on a walk, playing with 10 week old Ru, and meeting about 100 others, many of whom are looking for homes. I am now a major dingo fan & have so much respect for the work this organization does!

Foxes and cats, who were introduced much later during colonization, are also of course controversial figures in Australia. With new laws, foxes are no longer permitted to be given sanctuary; the group at their facility is grandfathered in but they are not allowed to save more, which is quite heartbreaking. With several cats in foster care, I think they’re a brave & important organization for focusing on the sentient beings who are being harmed due to their species.

Thank you Charlie & team for your beautiful work, and for inviting me to visit! ❤️ 2025-08-28 20:37:47 I want to intro.. 9,305 -65% 138 -69%
#HillsPartner #Ad Some of the greatest love stories begin an animal shelter, including mine with Ferguson (shelter name: “Rodeo”) and Birdie (simply “A1778093”). Their first photos are a reminder that life in a shelter is just a prologue, with so many happy chapters ahead just waiting to be written. A cozy home, an adventure buddy, a familiar name called by someone they love—these are the things shelter animals dream of and deserve.

Throughout August, I’ve been teaming up with HillsPet for NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters, the nation’s largest adoption and donation campaign helping 1,700+ shelters find loving homes for animals in need. Shelters are over capacity right now, with hundreds of cats and dogs awaiting families. This is our chance to change that.

With just a few days left in August, I want to encourage everyone considering adoption to take the leap. If you’ve been waiting until you feel “perfectly prepared,” don’t let perfection get in the way of bringing home a friend. I wasn’t perfectly prepared when I adopted my first dog last year, but love and commitment are what truly matter, and the rest will follow. Animals don’t need perfection—they just need you.

Kangaroos, wallabies, and wallaroos…oh my! 🦘

As a neonate caregiver, I’m enamored with any opportunity to care for rescued baby animals, and macropods may be some of my favorite babies ever! Macropods are a family of marsupials with distinctive features like remarkably long hind limbs and muscular tails, and of course pouches where their young are reared.

While here in Australia, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of meeting several neonatal wildlife rehabbers who care for these special beings. Like kittens, macropods are altricial animals who must be bottle-fed around the clock…but unlike kittens they generally sleep in little cozy bags that mimic their mama’s pouch.

These rehabbers are truly committed: orphaned joeys will be in care until they are 18-24 months old before they can be returned to the wild. Phew! That’s a lot of work.

I want to extend my huge respect to wireswildliferescue and their network of licensed rehabbers who are making a massive impact saving the lives of orphaned and injured wild animals across Australia.

So tell me: can you spot the differences between these three species? Here’s who they are:

1-5: Bunny the eastern grey kangaroo
6-8: Little Boy the eastern grey kangaroo (I didn’t catch his name so let’s call him that)
9: Andrew the eastern grey kangaroo
10-11: Monica the swamp wallaby
12-17: Kyle the swamp wallaby
18-20: Whiskey the common wallaroo

P.S. I do not support exhibits with captive animals, and urge you to consider supporting rescue sanctuaries & rehabilitation centers when traveling rather than captive wildlife attractions. 💕 2025-08-26 15:13:38 K.. 20,139 -23% 251 -44%

Part 3 of my video response. This is what I love to see: people feeling personally empowered to save lives! If you’re ready to help:

Comment “LEARN” and I’ll send you info on how to care for foster kittens!

Ways to help:

1) Sterilize every cat you can. Your cat. The shop cat down the street. Your weird aunt’s backyard cats. The cats you see darting around the alley. We don’t need more kittens born.

2) Sign up to foster. Foster for an open admission shelter, a private shelter, a rescue group—any and all need your help. Your vet costs are covered and often your supplies are too. Google your city name + “animal shelter” or “kitten foster.” Contact them & save a life.

3) Become a member of orphankittenclub, a nonprofit that is changing the tide for shelter kittens. This charity is dedicated to funding kitten care in shelters across America: overnight programs, foster programs, kitten-focused shelter staff, lifesaving supplies. As a member you are part of the movement to change what happens to kittens in shelters—and you even get cute kitten postcards in the mail to hang on your fridge and remind you that you are making a difference. 2025-08-19 05:14:06 P.. 5,885 -78% 225 -50%
Part 2 of my video responding to heated comments!

“No kill” status often doesn’t include neonatal kittens like Maxine because they are not categorized as “healthy and treatable.” That’s one of many reasons I don’t like the term and think it is misleading to the public, who deserve to know what’s happening & how to help.

It’s a major misunderstanding to believe that there are just “good” “no-kill” shelters and “bad” “kill” shelters. That’s not how this works. There are simply limited admission shelters (often “no kill” because they can turn away who they can’t help) and open admission shelters (often euthanizing due to not enough help, but sometimes achieving “no kill” of “healthy and treatable” animals, which may not include kittens.) These organization types exist in almost every community, and are interdependent. But both count on one common factor: more foster parents! Foster for either—they both need you.

Comment “LEARN” and I’ll send you info on how to get started as a kitten foster parent.

3M views and 5K+ comments later, my last post made a LOT of people upset…and I’m extremely touched!

This is video 1 of 3. Watch them all to see my replies to these heated comments.

Baby kittens dying *is* deeply upsetting, and most people have no clue this is what happens in their community without foster care. But don’t point a finger—lend a hand. You can help kittens like Maxine. Yes, you, reading this. You can help by fostering.

Comment “LEARN” and I’ll send you info on how to get started as a kitten foster parent. Baby kittens like Maxine are literally at the shelter in your area right now. Shelter employees are begging for you to help them—today. They don’t need ridicule, they need support. Can you babysit a kitten for a week? Two weeks? You can save a life. You.

Ways to help:

1) Sterilize every cat you can. Your cat. The shop cat down the street. Your weird aunt’s backyard cats. The cats you see darting around the alley. We don’t need more kittens born.

Little kittens come into the shelter in the most interesting packages! Everyone, please welcome our newest foster kitten Maxine, or Maxi for short. 🖤

P.S. Maxine is safe, but she is just one example of the countless kittens at risk in shelters across America right now. Her situation is not unique; 170,000 kittens just like her died in US shelters last year because no one came to foster them. If this upsets you, please — be a part of the solution and foster locally. 2025-08-15 22:40:56 Little kittens.. 168,977 +543% 4,202 +830%
Yesterday our Orphan Kitten Club team spent the day at Riverside County Animal Shelter, one of 110+ shelter partners we support with kitten-focused funding, staffing and mentorship.

While there, we were able to see just how overwhelming kitten season is for them. 27 young kittens came in, seemingly back to back to back. Orphan kittens cannot survive in shelters if left overnight without care, so they depend on foster parents saying “yes” to a few weeks of babysitting to help them make it to 8 weeks.

This shelter has amazing adoption rates for 8+ week old kittens! But like most open intake shelters, baby kittens have historically been at the highest risk. I’m so proud that we have been able to support their PIKU and help them hire a staff member, John, whose job is to care for these baby kittens during the day and give them a chance for foster parents to arrive.

If you live near Riverside, please pop in any day and tell them you’d like to foster kittens from the PIKU. The room needs to clear by the end of the day, and you can be part of doing that. John or another staff member will show you who has come in, and you can save their life with just a few weeks of love. With free supplies and vet care, now all these kittens need is you. 🖤

Jumping for joy…because it’s adoption weekend! 🎉

Saying goodbye to fosters doesn’t have to be sad. I always treat adoption day like a celebration, because it is!

Keeping an attitude of joy might be a “fake it til you make it” approach for new foster parents, but I promise that you’ll eventually find adoption day to be a truly happy occasion. It feels so good to know that your fosters have made it to the loving home every animal deserves, and that there’s now room for another animal in need to know the same safety and love.

Kitten eyes go through major changes during the first two months of life. If you’re trying to determine a kitten’s age, here are five stages of eye developmental appearance to help you figure it out!

😌 Closed (0–12 days):
Newborn kittens are born with their eyes sealed shut, and slowly open them around 8-12 days old.

⚫️ Black (2–3.5 weeks):
Once the eyes open, they appear almost black! That’s because their pupils are dilated and unreactive to light, and their irises are barely visible yet.

🔵 Blue (3.5–6 weeks):
As their pupillary light reflex matures, you’ll start to see their baby blue irises. All kittens start with blue eyes due to the lack of melanin production at this age!

🧿 Transitional (6–7 weeks):
As melanin production starts to kick in, you’ll notice the eye pigment changing, starting at the center. It might look like they have a small island of gold or green surrounding the pupil, expanding every day. While some kittens keep their blue eyes, most will transition at this time!

🟢 Adult Color (7-8 weeks+):
By adoption age, most kittens will have their permanent adult eye color, though small changes can continue to occur over the course of their lives!

What’s your favorite stage? I think the transitional phase is so cool. Pictured here is a close-up look at my current foster kitten Roman at ages 8, 6, 4, 2 and 0 weeks old. 2025-08-06 21:54:18 .. 13,415 -49% 73 -84%
Arial is 8 weeks old today—officially adoption age! I’ve snapped a photo of her once a week since the day she was born, and it’s so fun to watch her grow from tiny and helpless to mighty and independent. Here are her photos from 8 weeks down to 0 weeks!

Fostering kittens changes a life in the blink of an eye. It may be just a small blip in our lives, but it quite literally gives them the gift of a lifetime. 🤍 2025-08-06 07:51:29 Arial is 8 weeks.. 21,421 -19% 159 -65%
A sweet little visitor came to the orphankittenclub clubhouse today—baby Monkey! 🐒

Monkey is from our partner organization, riversidecountyanimalservices in Riverside, CA. As one of the highest volume shelters in America, they have a very significant need for more kitten support. That’s why over the past year, our team has worked closely to help them through grants and mentorship!

We’ve organized staff trainings, funded a vet triage telehealth service for their kitten foster parents, provided kitten formula, and even funded a staff role that specifically cares for kittens awaiting foster. You can see more about our partnership on the orphankittenclub page!

The thing they need more than anything is more people willing to foster. If you live in Riverside, I implore you: walk through their doors and tell someone you are there to help foster a kitten. You will truly be saving a life just like little Monkey here. ❤️

To our club members & donors, thank you for saving so many shelter kittens just like Monkey. His little happy eating noises are a small echo of your compassion, and we are so grateful. 2025-08-05 03:32:58 A sweet litt.. 13,882 -47% 93 -79%
